I'm just speculating, but he probably decided to fund them or their program because he seems to understand the importance of music theory, and most jazz programs stress theory more than other programs. Not that blues, rock, funk, soul, gospel, & R&B are devoid of theory--certainly they are not--but jazz programs usually expose their students to a larger range/spectrum of theory and playing, which can be, of course, applied to all other forms. In fact, this notion of learning the full range of theory is the only reason why I think that most musicians should also have a class in classical--for the theory. But, again, I'm just speculating as to why he chose to donate his funds to a jazz program. But, funding a jazz program is a great way to help expose young people to the full range of “playing.” Yet, with all of that said, he could have just heard of their story and said, "Man, let me help those youngsters." The truth of the matter is that I’d like to give money to all of the homeless people I meet. Yet, some days I do and some days I don’t, and it varies each day as to why I do and why I don’t. I’m just happy dude is helping people. Now, he can help me by releasing official DVDs and CDs of this current tour, including the Dakota shows, ‘cause it’s bangin’! | |
