I really don't like period pieces that try to incorporate current music.
It never works for me.
I bet Genesia would agree.

I'm not Genesia, but I agree.
Not surprised by this tbh, when it was announced I thought "let's wait and see....."

Never saw that coming.
Don't suppose Lana Del Ray is covering 'Young & Beautiful' from One Nite Alone?
Now i'm being silly. | |

You win that bet.
Yeah...I really hate that. Somehow it always feels...I don't know...dumbed down.
Now, if you want to do a complete retelling of a story from a modern perspective (like adapting Jane Austen's Emma for Clueless), I'm perfectly okay with that. Just don't call it Emma. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

i still think movie soundtracks would be a good way for him to get some songs out there to a wider audience than just his own following.
plus, i think, he might get his money up front when contribution music to a film soundtrack.
and since he doesn't feel like doing albums right now, it might actually be a nice avenue to explore for a bit.
eventhough i already expected him to not be on the great gatsby, but he could use his music as a bit of a two way street with other films.
because if prince likes a project enough and thinks people should see it, i don't know, like a semi documentary or stuff, one of his songs on that project's soundtrack would attract his fan's attention to the film as well.
plus he gets the casual listeners in, plus he gets his money up front
there's probably all kinds of master ownership shit that he can't bypass easily so that might be why he's not doing more soundtracks.

also, what the hell is up with this project? it's been delayed so many times now. i'm sure i've seen the first trailer for it in a cinema over a 18 months ago
i have to admit that i still want to see it because it seems strangely beautiful.
but i hate trailers that give away the pivotal moment in a movie. and this one does exactly that. the key scene is in the damn trailer.
although i guess at least 70% of the people going to see that movie will have read the book. isn't it like manditory reading in US highschool or something?
but still. damn and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

That's too bad, I was looking forward to this soundtrack. It's also in Rolling Stone "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

Awww. Some of my favorite (guitly pleasures or otherwise) "period" pieces have encorporated musical anachronism. Mad Men has at least done this once while featuring a Decemberists song. Didn't kill my illusion. Similiarly, Boarldwalk Empire's opening number is also from a modern band as well. And let's not forget Under The Cherry Moon.

Why would there be?

Pity. I think "Down" would have suited this film. "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

He probably read the Cliff's Notes and realized the movie is basically about him. Fantasy and Mystery, manufactured to escape reality. Not in small does like seeing a movie, but as a way of life. Probably struck too close to home.

See first post - in December, there were articles saying he was on the soundtrack.

What makes you think UTCM is a period piece? it has Porsche, it has cable.

Under the Cherry Moon was a full-on fantasy piece. The time period was never made clear - so any music worked.
The Great Gatsby takes place in the 1920s. They called it "The Jazz Age" for a reason - there is music that is strongly associated with that time. To throw in that modern crap makes no sense whatsoever. [Edited 5/8/13 6:54am] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I wasn't being serious about the last one. Perhaps the smiley didn't do a enough to indicate there should be a tongue firmly planted in cheek for that one.
But the previous examples, I'm being sincere about. "I mean I always figured you were a trip at times, but now I'm beginning to believe you're a freaking vacation." -2elijah
