Prince's disturbing Guitar Technique? why is it that when prince plays guitar he does all those ugly and weird faces and expressions like he is in pain or having an orgasm? I think it takes away from the playing and is a reason folks dont take him seriously as a guitar player.why all the ugly faces?

Prince does get his props as a guitar player. The reason he did not do so in the past was because he danced around alot and did not play as much as he could have.
The facial expressions that Prince makes are no different than what Steve Vai does. They are all channeling Hendrix in terms of their stage presence.

It's gotten a bit excessive during the last 10 years or so. I don't think the OP is being unreasonable with the comment of some people not taking him seriously due to that, because even I find it hard to take him seriously when he does that.

I think his guitar face is the best there is, no one puts quite as much emotion into it as P does, as good as alot of players are I can't stand it when they stand there completely expressionless looking like they're not into it. I like it - it is almost like he is channeling a voice in the guitar - like it is singing for him. I notice Brian May of Queen does something similar - I think it just living in the moment. Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Steve Vai does the same. I read that steve actually writes lyrics to alot of his instrumentals but doesn't sing them. I have seen him mouth some words to his playing though. She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo

The reason is show business. He has to be seen by people all the way in the back and this the same reason stage actors have to tone down what they do for TV and TV actors have to tone it down even more for the movie theater. Also, his after shows may be awesome and where he really cut loose in the past, but you can't just play the songs during the planned-out main show expressing how bored you might be. He makes those faces for the sake of entertaining the audience. We have been conditioned to believe that if you're not contorting your face whilst playing a guitar solo then you're not feeling. This couldn't be more incorrect, but that's what non-musicians seem to think by and large.

If you could play guitar like that, you'd make those faces too.
Trust me on this. | |

If you are a guitar player you would know why. Most guitar players when they solo, are actually "singing/scatting" the notes in thier head, creating melodic lines while playing.
Look at some singers faces when they sing, some are ugly as you know what.
When you're just struming and playing chords, you don't need to make those expressions.
Soloing on the guitar takes a real concentrated effort.
THAT NOTE AND THAT FACE GO HAND IN HAND!!

All part of his awesome style which makes the yu so exciting to watch. No matter what I have thought of his output at times in his career, I have always paid attn when he was ready to play guitar. Fury on snl, dreamer on Leno-do I mention Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:) he has that 'thang' that you can not learn. Having said all hat, I did see him sound heck when he came to the ONA Toronto show and he did Elephants and Flowers/Whole lotta love minus the faces ad expressions. It was all business and was impressive. The guy is incredible no matter what he does.

Its called GUITAR FACE. Its not a big deal, in fact there is an entire website and facebook page dedicated to John Mayer's guitar face. . Try making poker face playing like that. Not gonna happen. You can't bluff that its not happening, K?. . I have heared it commented on before, but not as a thing that takes away from him being "taken seriously". . It was nice to know that Prince thought he sounded well (As did everyone else) in Portland. I don't think its an act at all. seems natural. No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ . He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

I.M.H.O. First, he makes the faces because he feels the music. * Second, he makes the faces bigger so the people in the back can see them. * Third, He's using all that energy, that use to be spread out all over the stage in his guitar playing and it's showing up on his face. * Fourth, he exaggerates them even more to distract from the fact that he's not moving on top, around, up, down, all over the stage like he use to. I'm firmly planted in denial
