Why do so many Prince fans have a misguided sense of entitlement?

I mean, you'd think after 30 years of constant ouput people would be thankful the little man is still around and active.

Perhaps being one of the most prolific mainstream artists of recent times has made his fans greedy or given them some kind of misguided notion that they are perhaps entitled to new product from Prince.

How about a little bit of love and appreciation for everything he's given us over the years? Yeah, I know he can be a tool at times, but chances are, if you're reading this, Prince has enriched all our lives with his music and I think that should count for something.

What?

Most folks here would just be happy if they'd get their lotusflow3r t-shirt or npgmc Crystal Ball set.

The rest just want their $77 worth.

The more I hear complaints like "He should put out a CD with 12-15 songs", "He should do this, he should do that", "Screwdriver sucks, FixUrLifeUp is horrible".... the more ignorant I become towards people like that. Because honestly I don't need negative opinions influencing how much I truly love and appreciate the man and his music. I could care less if he puts out an album this year or not. I think the only thing Prince fans are "entitled" 2 is their opinion, which I respect. But at the end of the day, I'm the last person that's gonna sit here and huff and puff about him.

Don't hate me 'cause I'm NOT beautiful

hahaha.. spit

.

(I hope it was meant to be funny, cuz the post made me laugh, (sorry about that...)).

.

on the serious side, I am sometimes struggeling as a Prince fan since 1983 (30 years.. gosh!),

.

I really want to like the new music Prince is releasing, and I actually love most of his songs.

.

But I simply can't love it all.

.

I just find some of it not that good, some is rather awful - and some sounds just weird or uninspired. (I have to add I really like most of the new songs on the 3rdEG site).

.

- but yeah... that's just the way it is, could be me that have changed over the years, and of course Prince, cuz he has changed a lot too, right?

It's not just prince fans though, it's the whole damn western world these days. Whether it's fans of sports teams who don't really support their teams anymore, but expect them to win and when they don't, they shout abuse and boo, or music fans who feel that their favourite artists owe them something.
We've lived for so long now getting all we want, when we want it, through credit cards, that we've forgotten how to be grateful for the simple things. We're all just victims of society really.

I guess the only thing I am annoyed with is that all my facebook friends and family get to post on their status update: "I'm Kinda feeling like this righ now" and there is a little music video of a song of their favorite artist. I know more about my friend now, and that artist has a little more exposure, yay, everyone wins. Ugh and sometimes its a crappy Katy Perry song or something. At least I like good music LOL.

.

THEN WHEN I FEEL DEPRESSED I CAN'T POST SOMETIMES IT SNOW IN APRIL as my status update.

.

I am just jealous of al my friends who get to express themselves freely is all. And yes even though it is another artists work, the audience is a part of the rhetorical situation. Every educated writer knows this. Annoying as hell.

.

But no, Im not annoyed with his productivity or anything.

Prince created this environment himself. We're just living in it. He's known for "one album per year". He's always wanted to release MORE MORE MORE. Warner Brothers limited his output to avoid saturating the market (SOTT was supposed to be 3 discs) but gave him the ability to release side projects when his output was too prolific.

He battled against WB for "freedom" to release anything and everything he wanted. When he finally got his freedom, he released Emancipation and Crystal Ball but then the "prolific" output slowed down. The last decade has been hard as a Prince fan when you're used to the quantity of output of the 80s and even 90s.

As far as entitlement, I think it's two-fold: First, don't release garbage just for the sake of getting something out there. Take 5 years off if you need to, get outside production, whatever - just release something that lives up to the legend. Second don't start a project and then let it get stale. Finish it, maintain it, or shut it down. That's how I feel about the 3EG website. It generated a lot of buzz and then fizzled.

It's like retailers who run sales, then bitch because they can't sell anything at full price. They trained their customers to expect the sales and then are pissed when that's the only draw that works. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

That's just it. If you mostly view Prince/music as product to consume instead of art to be enjoyed, you've already set yourself up for disappointment. Already imbued yourself with a sense of entitlement.

We aren't signing ourselves up for a subscription to netflix, ordering a pizza, or buying a new car. We are buying music. There is no money back gurantee on how it's going to make you feel, or not feel, etc.

The upside is, we always free to call the customer complaint line and bitch about Prince all day and night here at prince.org. Don't we have better things to do though?

I'd say a bit of it has to do with the officially unreleased stuff.

Many of us have heard stuff which has not been on albums and I guess people just question why more of it can't be released. There's one CD off The Work collection, I can't remember which one, but it has Rebirth of the Flesh, Teacher, Teacher, etc. and my god, if that actual CD does not contain some of his best ever material - and it's all officially unreleased!!!

Maybe that's a reason when people hear Fixurlife or Screwdriver they are a little disappointed. Personally, I'm looking forward to a hopefully released CD.

I absolutely hate the term entitlement.

.

Prince is an entertainer. It isn't crazy for fans to want to be entertained.

Prince plays up the fact he has a vault full of unreleased content. It isn't crazy for fans to want what's inside.

Prince has been prolific in terms of music output. It isn't crazy for fans to expect that to continue when he's still making music and in good health.

.

Now, there's people who only like certain eras of Prince and expecting him to stay still is unrealistic but beyond that, his fans are really patience with his always changing plans and constant teases. I can't imagine anybody putting up with that from other artist.

tonight the stars are out
there's music in the air
the sounds of joy and celebration
are drowning out despair

What you may not see as inspiring, Prince may have put his heart and soul into it, His fans must realise that he CANNOT please all of them. But for those who enjoy his music, and for those who are not too fond of his ALL his music, and is just happy he is alive and making music still, I say THANK YOU. Because God forbid, he left this earth today. His "uninspiring music" would now become works of GOLD!. This is why I hate this forum, because it has now become a bashing ground for Prince "fans" to give there half-ass opinon, on a LEGEND in the music industry. I have no idea what they want from him anymore....

I think the thing is, when he's on he's SO GOOD, that it becomes frustrating to watch anything less.

People were complaining about the set lists during 21 Nights in LA... at the halfway point I ran the numbers and he had done more than eighty different tunes, with an average of around 20 a night. I mean...

I was going to post something similar.

I remeber watching him in Chicago at the HOB that Tuesday night. Everybody knows what night I am talking about. It was a night where Prince showed what he is capable of. He brought it. I am the most cynical of the cynics and my jaw was on the floor.

It is indeed my issue that I expect him to be like that but when you have seen him at his peek or heard him at his peek, anything else is a letdown.
