Girl..... This is a post about the song Girl. The b-side...Its a bouncy and feels like spring love.
The shocking thing to me at the time it was released was how he asked the girl to marry him.
Yes, he once quandried about getting married in The Beautiful Ones but that didnt seem as earnest or genuine as when he speaks about it in this song.
It took me aback because at the time the whole of his music was about free loving and such..not married life.
This song is underrated as a b-side and Ive read about people disliking it before. Maybe its the rubberband groove bass in it, or the simplistic manner of the music. Its sparse and almost like When Doves Cry in the manner that its his voice to the fore.

yeah but it always gets overshadowed by Shes Always In My Hair
I see them on the same design label "Climb in my fur."

Yea girl is so so to me She's always in my hair is alot easier on the ears.

See?
Proof positive right here
no doubt Shes Always In My Hair is great..and thats because its a straight ahead rock song with a great guitar melody and traditional guitar solo
folks were craving that after the underwhelming ATWIAD failed to have the same power that Purple rain did
but if you think about it, Girl in its understaed little self is actually more easy on the ears..Hair is blasting in your face while Girl is pleasant and warm.... "Climb in my fur."

Have you ever played it backwards?

No..Im afraid to mess up my current technics turntable band..I heard it has Wendy talking or singing Girl "Climb in my fur."

Yep! Except she's saying "Boy..."....If you have a digital copy you can run it through Audacity and reverse it. That's what I did.

I looooooove the extended version of Girl. I actually hadn't heard it 'til about five years ago, when I tracked it down and bought it.
I love the inflection on the "Marry me" line. It's like he's baring his soul and trying to laugh it off but he just gets so overcome that he blurts it out. But he says it in a way that makes you think he's actually thought about it before - and that he wants to catch her off-guard with it. So that if she says "no," he can just laugh it off again.
I love it when he does "vulnerable."

LOVE GIRL, the sound the flow, the lyrics, the touch of nastiness, LOVE all 3 Bsides of this album project
Girl (3:51) Initial tracking took place in Spring-Summer 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA, along with several other tracks that would re-appear over the next several years. Prince remixed the track slightly in 1985 at an unknown location (Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, is likely). -PrinceVault

I used to love turning those silly records backward whenever I heard some gobbledygook. Not just to see what they actually said, but because I loved the way reversed percussion sounded.

Yeah thats what I mean. he was speaking not singing about marriage. His nose was wide open here. He was hooked. He was whipped. From Darling Nikki to marry me
he says that you can tell all about him by his music and songs. Well it appears that he was telling us the deal
OF COURSE IT WAS A BSIDE AND NOT ON AN ALBUM..wha ta pussy lol

Folks don't realize the importance to being accepted as a rocker that backwards masking was to him and his career.
Just as much or moreso than Dirty Mind project. "Climb in my fur."

I still think that was his "happiest" period, musically. You know...like Picasso had his Blue Period after the suicide of a close friend, Prince had his Yellow Period (every day is a yellow day) with Susannah. Girl...Screams of Passion...Splash...Adore...Alexa de Paris. It was all sunshine and warm breezes during that time. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I was shocked with the line "your ass is so tight" !!!!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yeah..agreed wholeheartedly and the Picasso analogy is apt. This time meant so much to him that it caused him to write Wally when it all went away.
And it seems like the subsequbnet dallinaces did not have the same effect on the music as i did here at this time.
There is a reason Sheila E's Family Jam included the main players from 85-86 years.
Granted I mised the angry 1999 years, but Im about to give it up to Susannah and them for creating an era where anything is possible. I am selfish having wanted the one man mastabutory 1999 type of music. But I was young then and now realize the power of Large Room No Light compard to Lady Cab Driver (high Vainandy lol). "Climb in my fur."

I always think if All My Dreams lyrics when I hear/read the lyrics to Girl
A submarine valiantly conquers a virgin sea
Marry me 2day and 2night we'll make love until the world stops turning

Never been a big fan of this song. Unless it's the 12" version, there's no point in listening. And even then it's barely worth it. Alright, but not really one I consider to be in the pantheon from that era.

I like it now. | |

I see where you are coming from but A.M.D. seems like a Busby Berekely type of univeral theme and performance
Girl seems intimate and one on one. Like WDC. "Climb in my fur."

All My Dreams has a total "20s/30s crooner singin' into a megaphone" vibe. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

See..underrated
I think it should be noted for it being one of the first personal themes of them all..that was not part of a specific project. "Climb in my fur."
