"Wonderful Ass" 10min. Version? On Work It 2.0 updated there is a version of the song that I've never heard before. It is the 10 minute version of "Wonderful Ass". This is now my favorite version of the song. Anyway my question is when was this particular version recorded? It brings me back to the sound Prince had in '82/'83. I want to believe it is the full '83 version but I'm not sure.
Can anyone elaborate on this? [Edited 3/23/13 5:19am] Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

I really really hope it is the full '83 version (one of my many sought after Prince holy grails...which I know everyone has ) Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

I believe that's a remix of the original. sounds to me like Wendy & Lisa did the remix or at least added a lot of the overdubs. i like it, but maybe not as much as the original 6min version.

I don't get why Princevault doesn't mention it though . Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

strange that. must be an oversight on their part. maybe it is ultra rare and only we have ever heard it!!!!! (doubt it though)

Yeah definitely doubt that . Well whatever it is, it sure is good Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

That's what I believed, which made me think the 10 minute version was made earlier. Maybe way earlier. I still have the feeling that it is from the early '80s...IDK. It would be nice to have more info but like I said, there is no info about it on Princevault and I don't have a copy of Per Nilsen's The Vault.
Which, speaking of The Vault, will anyone who has a copy try to look up the 10min. version? Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

Does it give a specific year or era it was recorded in? Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

Your thread got me wondering about this, so I took a look in Uptown's Turn it up book. Here's some quotes: Dating back to 1983 (a description of the song follows) It was reworked by Wendy & Lisa in early 1986. Two versions of the song are circulating but there are no discernable differences, the shorter version just being an edit of the long version. For those who have the book, it's on page 33.

That's the thing though, I have 3 (three) versions of "Wonderful Ass" and all three are totally different from each other. I mean REALLY different. I just listened to them all back to back. I am at a loss for words. very confused...
Edit: All three of the versions I have are completely genuine as well. (just thought I would put that out there in case anyone had suspicions). [Edited 3/23/13 11:17am] [Edited 3/23/13 11:18am] Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

Damn, this is a weird Prince mystery . Surely someone can shed some light on it. We might've finally found the full length '83 version. I mean I kinda feel like it is, it has that '82/'83 Prince style Linn and a lot of the stuff that reminds me of that time period.
I may be wrong though, but can't find any info at all about the 10min "Wonderful Ass". Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

there are like 4 versions on Work It 2.0, from what I remember.
I also remember thinking that it was only 2 versions duplicated for the 2 years they were worked on ('83, '86). I never could tell any differences, actually, because they sounded like shit.

Well whatever this 10 minute version is, I absolutely ADORE it! I fantasize about it being the '83 version. I sure I'll be disappointed one day by learning it isn't, but right now there isn't any proof that it isn't.
You're right about the very low quality about two of the four versions (apparently I missed one while uploading to Itunes haha) on the set though...especially the one labled #4. You can hardly hear him sing!
The 10min. version though is pretty good quality. You can hear (IMO) 1999 style drum programming. Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

I have all four versions from Work It 2.0 Disk 28. I love the song so the 10 minute version is cool to me. "A united state of mind will never be divided
The real definition of unity is 1 People can slam their door, disagree and fight it But how U gonna love the Father but not love the Son? United States of Division"

I have what I thought was Work It 2.0, but the four versions come from Disc 4, Disc 9 and disc 10. What the heck? Is #1 around 2 min, #2 and #3 around 6:20 or so and #4 the 10 minute one? [Edited 3/23/13 19:57pm]

Hey--I'm not trying to figure out if I have every Endorphinmachine sample on that collection, am I? Now, that would be nuts!
Actually, I can't see what the difference is between the two six minute versions, but in my defense, I have so far accepted that and not gone back and listened to them again, because I don't quite care that much. I'm willing to only compared them once.
See, I'm not crazy. Really I'm not.

I'm still just wondering about the 10min version . Although, I do have to say I am a Prince completionist at heart haha. Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

On Work It 2.0 there is an odd but interesting version "snippet" Wonderful Ass #1 This appears to be an earlier version with prince on the vocals only and less drums I'm not sure if its a fake or if some one tweaked the sound. But this may be the real 1st version Its incomplete, sounds like crap quality wise. So i have little intrest listening to it Though i suspect some one ran it through filters on purpose just to tease us
The 10 minute version is obviously an extended / long version I will take my place, In the great below

Yeah, I'm not sure I can take that one seriously. I'll just stick to listening to the 10 min version.

I can't listen to any of the versions on Work It ever since Box O' Chocolates came out.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Why not? The wooh is on the one!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
10 minute version sounds awful, how can you willingly listen to that? RIP
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Because most of the time I'm listening with crappy earbuds. Though actually I'm probably more likely to listen to Box of Chocolates if I'm choosing (and things aren't just popping up on shuffle).
