Sorry I am not a student of Musiclogy or musical genres, if it sounds like a ballad to me I think its a ballad.
Power Fantastic with its piano and flowing balletic melody to me sounds like a ballad. I thought slow jams could be ballad along with soppy romantic songs, but yes I guess I have thing with lumping quiet storm numbers in with the ballads.
Prince is the master of quiet storm ballads and smooth bedroom r and b is another name I give tracks like I love u in me and Dark. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name | |

I find Arms of Orion to be a brilliant work of art. From the arrangement of the song to the inter-twining of Prince and Sheena's voices, I experience it as beautiful ballad. No justice, No peace | |

The 2nd and 3rd definitions are only appliable for written poetry. For common sense, a ballad, in popular music, is a romantic slow song (definitions 1, 4 and 5).
A ballad as narrative is something more linked to written poetry. I do realize there's the Ballad of Dorothy Parker, but it's an alusion to the fact that the song tells a story, entitled after whose story it is (like the Ballad of a Thin Man by Bob Dylan, for instance). If any song that tells a story in a ballad poem form is to be considered a ballad song, then ALL Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell songs are ballads, and even BILLIE JEAN is a ballad.
Thus, I dont think If I was your girlfriend, The ballad of Dorothy Parker, Joy in repetition and many other songs mentioned here are ballads. I always have these songs in this order at the end of my compilations because they just sound so damn good together. IMO, his big, synthy, super-produced ballads like Eye Hate U, Diamonds and Pearls and especially The Most Beautiful Girl in the World really did not age well. The more minimalistic and the less structured the ballad is, the better it holds up today. Following a whole bunch of faster, mid-paced mid-paced songs:
