a 'New to Prince? go here type deal? Oh yes that'd be great.

Plus it gives those posters who like to feel all superior somewhere to go to feel all high and mighty.

Win/win.

I really HATE 6 songs off of Emancipation.

But let's do the math. 36 - 6 = 30.

I like 30 songs off of a single album. That's pretty solid to me.

I'm not crazy about the choice of instruments or production; but, the songs are good.

Emancipation is underrated.

Those are solid albums in my opinion epecially the Rainbow Children.

In a way, if you get the more recent albums like those, acclimatise yourself to that stuff, and THEN go back and get the real shit. The 80s bonanza. You're mind twill be blown.

Liking this comment. ^

I like Planet earth, but not half as much as the previous year's 3121. Think it was cause it was attached to the whole 21 nights and summer 2007 when I first got to see him live.

Rainbow children took me a good few years to get into, but now it's one of my most regularly played cds.

Emancipation on the otherhand, I find to be nothing shy of shite. Plastic and empty with the exception of very few tracks.

It's one of those albums that you might learn to appreciate when you've listened to Prince's stuff for years. Not necessarily because the music is so "complex", but because it captures some of the essence from some of his most productive periods (that is, the mid-80s era and the early-90s era).

Can't answer the Op's question--I do listen to Emancipation as well as Planet Earth periodically--but now, I am currently enamoured with Bowie's album The Next Day. cool

Don't say it too loud, some Prince fans get very angry when you mention Bowie! lol Strange, because, in my opinion, Prince has a lot more in common with Bowie than with, say, Madonna or even Michael Jackson.

Anyway, Planet Earth is a great record, and it includes one of my all time favourites: "Lion Of Judah".

I detest Lion of Judah. From the opening bar my stomach recoils in horror. To me it's anti-music. Yes it is sound, no it is not musical. If music like this was all Prince had ever done I would have never bought a single song. I really dislike this song that much.

It's funny how are tastes differ.

I agree with you on Lion Of Judah, along with Resolution I dont think I'll ever listen to them 2 again.

But as you say its all about different tastes - I think 20Ten is a better album than Planet Earth but most would probably disagree

Well it was originally 4, but I couldn't buy Come..Oh no not with my mother there! Anyway the choices were Planet Earth, Emancipation, and The Rainbow Children......I think I made a bad choice.... sad Ya see, I've read alot of negative comments about Planet Earth, and I thought some of U guys were just bashing the album for the hell of it, but I guess not smile Is this one of those albums that U have to listen to over and over again to like? I hope thats the case, cause right now, I'm not feelin' it. I shouldve listened to ya'll lol

I agree with that. Definitely not a good album (not saying that I don't like some of the songs, though). I think 20Ten is the next worst.

I like planet earth more than emancipation. Emancipation has to be his most bland album outside of Joint 2 Joint and Slave.

Considering most of the 3121/PE/LF stuff was recorded around the same time, there are definitely some better configurations of this material to be had.

2 really fantastic albums of stuff spread across all 3, but to me only LF satisfies almost completely.

it's easilty the better album of the two. Emancipation was a huge disappointment for me! only listen to White Mansion. PE, however has several that I go back to. S.H.O.E is a GREAT ballad. shows the voice is intact indeed. As a 'newb' have u decided what's your Prince "style" yet?

Wow Emancipation was a great album! Sooooo Many great songs. O_o I just don't understand! JOTY, RBHIMA, Somebodys Somebody, White Mansion, his cover of I Can't Make You Love me is sooooo good...... and that is just disc 1!!!! Holy River is one of my all time favorite Prince songs, Joint to Joint, Saviour makes my head tingle in the ending! The Love We Make, My Computer, Face Down, and even his cover of One Of Us just SHREDS......

you all have lost your minds.

Planet Earth, for me the best part is the guitar riff at the start of Resolution, I just love it - but as soon as Prince sings "The main problem with war... " I switch it off. There are very few reasons to listen to PE, its has some of the laziest and worst sonwriting in Prince's career. I sometimes have on as background music and its not bad as long as you dont have to listen to it closely. The worst thing about PE is the really bad production and lazy arrangements and horrible lyrics. Its almost like he wrote and recorded it in 2-3 days.

COME is not one of his best, but it is way better than PE with some real classics on it, like Letitgo, Come, and Space! In fact Im gonna listen to Space now - bye!

I'd say that the production on Planet Earth is certainly better than on Emancipation. That's taking also the arrangements into account as with Prince those two areas intersect quite a lot.

The lyrics, oh well. lol

Planet Earth is boring. Consistent only in its medocrity. Nothing on it is terrible but nothing stands out. It's the musical equvialent of an average sitcom or police drama. Emancipation is all over the place but it's hardly dull and there's so much of it that you can boil it down to just the tracks you like and wind up with something good.

hey, personally, I would of bought them all, cuz I'm a major fan,

but if money is an issue, I definitely would of got Emancipation.

2 good reasons are:

1. He was in a very happy place at this time in his life and you can feel it in his music

2. It's a triple album with so much more music,

I love "big white mansion" 'somebody's somebody"

and when I heard 'the love we make' for the first time, it gave me goosebumps
