What can Prince do... .
... that any of his proteges CAN do better? I was @ the wrekka sto recently & they were playing the Pandemonium album by The Time. "Chocolate" came on. :O ALL I wanted @ that moment was to hear my hissy bootleg version of Prince singing it Prince probably said, "do it the way I did it" but DAMN, Morris' delivery tries to duplicate it inflection for inflection, but it's SO lame compared to Prince's demo (it was a demo, right?) Okay, Morris is a better actor (well, he was in PR), Sheila plays drums better (DUH), Rosie's voice is much more powerful... but he outshines his proteges in every other way, right?? RIGHT??

Everytime I turned around Morris was trying to keep himself from laughing. I could keep listing his acting flaws, but ... Sheila plays drums better (DUH),

He looks better in black suede boots than Vanity would. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I'm not saying he's a good actor by any means, but I think he did better than P if I were to measure the 2 performances... Sheila plays drums better (DUH),
Nova, what are you saying? Should I not mention drums b/c she was already kicking ass before he discovered her? Rosie's voice is much more powerful... but he outshines his proteges in every other way, right?? RIGHT??

I'm convinced people fell in love with Morris' performance simply because he made most folks LAUGH. And if that's the case it's an apple/oranges comparison. Morris' character is supposed to be a caricature and make people laugh, Prince's character is more of a tortured soul who is more emotionally complex. To most people, I think the tortured soul type is less universally related to than someone who can make us laugh. Neither one had to do any stretching to play these parts. With Morris there were times (it seems when he had to be serious) when his verbal dialogue felt disjointed to me. At least with Prince I felt a flow when he delivered his lines. Sheila plays drums better (DUH),

Sheila's a better percussionist than drummer...yes, I hear the Sheila is the greatest drummer brigade on my trail. The fact that Prince hasn't played drums on his studio recordings THAT much probably adds to the pro-Sheila/anti-Prince drum opinion. But from every Prince performance on the kit that I've heard since the late 70s as compared to Sheila's playing, Prince has a better feel, is more funky, a bit more complex, and more versatile - I think he complements a song more. Nothing wrong with Sheila's playing at all. I just hear less inventiveness. I guess my own experience with this also leads me to this perspective. This post not for the wimp contingent. IMO, I think Prince is every bit as good a drummer as Sheila. I think they tended to imitate each other's drumming while Sheila was in the band. Listen to some of the boots from Lovesexy and Sign, then listen to Prince's drumming on Madhouse 8. -SWANGsays"don'tgetmestartedaboutPrince'sdrumming"
