this is great, the sound shows off prince's asset (guitar genius), and is missing prince's weakness (lyrics) - so its pleasantly missing. a whole album like this would be great! [Edited 3/14/13 16:18pm]

I'd consider it a cover as it contains the original just in a different style; that Donna is in the background is not relevant. It is a bit different from the original "Elektra" which is more rock/heavy. It has the purple touch.
That is, IMHO, the drum part is a bit different due to the double bass drum kicks and the fills are not as elaborate and rock heavy, they swing more, and the groove of the lead guitar is more funky and the notes played more smoothly. Donna's guitar playing is more heavy and notes are not as distinct from each other and Prince's notes are clear and the guitar sings. It's like Prince stripped it back a bit. Took out the heavyness and revealed the blues. Anyway, this it what it sounds like to me.

Prince is sexy fine again, love watching his fingers on the guitar. The girls are tight and lean sounds like they are ready for the tour. Keep the vids coming we all love them

Gotta ask the question... are there as many Tubescreamers as there are electric guitars? Everywhere I look I see the little green meanie.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If you want a boring answer to that - no, it's very unlikely that there are as many tube screamers out there as there are electric guitars.
It's a bit of a mystery to me why that pedal has become so popular. I guess it just works in many people's setups and that's enough for them ("well, it worked for x and should work for me too").

If U can't stand the heat, step out of the kitchen,
I got a treat for ya, and it ain't fried chicken,
The oven's so hot, it makes me st-tutututuuttter,

Looks like studio B?
Prince - as always on par with the axe.
Gilrls - shocking, worst band musically in years, without P dragging them along they'd be nothing.
5 years from now you won't even remember their names.

Love it. When was the last time he did a guitar instrumental? Alexa De Paris? I'm drawing a blank.

Well the video quality and also lighting are top notch. Having such a clear view of Prince's playing technique is fantastic.
There is something going on with his tone that is a bit dry and thin, though I do like it.
It makes sense to me this is Donna Grantis' song... she was hailed as a fusion guitarist from the GTA (Toronto area) before joining Prince.
What most folks forget here, and most others don't know, is that Prince essentially started out with fusion.
A lot of those early instrumentals come to mind.
But this song has but a touch of fusion within more of a Rock context... like it.
Looks like it was shot before Prince's current stripped down look with the Afro... we do know that they have been playing and recording together for a bit now.

I loved it on him when he was younger. But now I like the look in this video better.
99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I meant more like an entire, actual song. That's more of an intro/segue. I'm wondering more about like a stand alone, straight up guitar instrumental.

maybe some people think she's not bad....
....for a girl...
But seriously, she's a lot more laid back on the beat than Prince's previous drummers. That's not a timing issue, that's a feel thing...
Occasionally her timing actually SOUNDS like it's from Prince's drumming himself in the 70s, which in turn mimics Stevie Wonder...
Love this jam anyway- so much life in it... unusually filmed too which is refreshing...

It sounded almost like a preamp or DI'd tone in the beginning. Maybe for this recording they weren't mic'ing up the cabinet, but just used a "cabinet simulator" output on the amp or something like that.
edit - ok, now I see there's a "Tweed" amp in the background, so that's probably what they were using. Should explain it in that case. [Edited 3/15/13 22:56pm]

So tight. Zepplinish feel. Hannah shines on this one. Prince = amazing. Wow!

Gotta give Hannah credit on this one. I think it more her style. Mr Blackwell is untouchable, but this is definintely a sweet track.
