Great review guys! On the song "Sacrifice of Victor", you guys were trying to figure out what that song was about: was it Prince's new name, etc.

I think the "Sacrifice of Victor" is a metaphor for people's fight to achieve victories against personal and professional slavery, racism, prejudice and other obstacles. This song is autobiographical and lyrically one of his greatest songs EVER. "Family Name", "We March", "Sign O' The Times" are songs that are comparable to "Victor".

The victory metaphor is a man named Victor who outlines his life story from childhood (state mandated school busing of black and white children to opposite school districts) coming of age (drug trade i.e. crack epidemic) to adulthood (L.A. race riots). The sacrifices that he made like abstaining from using and selling drugs, hitting the books and going to college, helped him get the victory that he was fighting to achieve.

Your review of "My Name is Prince" actually saved this podcast for me, Captain. I almost shut it off until you chimed in. I quit listening to the Prince Podcast after they ripped this song so hard, especially Michael Dean. I know it's just opinions and everyone is entitled to their own, but Michael Dean was waaaaaaayyyyy off base, and also totally wrong. "My Name is Prince" is one of the most slamming album openers ever! It's a total banger from beginning to end, INCLUDING Tony M's barn burner of a rap (or rather, three barn burners! ).

I'm listening to the show right now, in fact, and just paused long enough to login to the Org and give you some props. So, thanks to your reasonable assessment of "My Name Is Prince," I'll finish listening to the show.

EDIT: I agree with you completely about "Sweet Baby." It's by far the most skippable track. I thought "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" was equally bland, too.

I love your shows,i really enjoyed this one & the last (Come),thanks fella's. I dig most of the album & some tracks i didn't like when it first came out have grown on me over the yrs. Sorry guys but 3 chains is not one of them. My faves are Love 2 the 9's,Sacrifice,& Damn u,in that order,followed by Sexy mf,Blue light,sweet baby. Keep on keeping on guys x

Thanks for that interpretation! It made me go back and read the lyrics. I think you're right, generally speaking, although I might quibble on some of the details. The key lyric that explains it is "Bernadette's a lady, and she told me 'Whatever you do son, a little discipline is what you need. You need to sacrifice." Very cool. I always thought it was sacrifice meaning martyrdom (killing) of the Victor character, which seemed a little overly dramatic. Now I get it -- sacrifice as in hard work. The song title through me off, but when I think about the "We sacrifice" line it's pretty obvious.

Those lyrics stand out to me too,but also these ; Mama held up her baby's 4 protection from a man with a strap in his hand,ask lil victor bout pain & rejection,u think he dont when he do understand.

I loved the performance of Sacrifice on the ryde dyvine & the vidoe vers of Love 2 the 9's. Kinda surprised no ones mentioned them.

I saw a heap of the nude & d&p shows & there was a bit when he used to run up & down the aisles everynight 'rapping' soooo bad! Being a (quality) hip hop fan myself didnt help matters. I was 19 when the album came out & have a sentimental attachment to it as well. But i'll never have a sentimental bone about tony m!

I love 'My Name Is Prince' too, I'm always playing it. But then again, 'Sweet Baby' is one of my favourite songs on the album and it isn't getting much love.

Just listened to the peach and black podcast for the first time. I started with the Gold experience review and then this one and I really thought they were excellent, they certainly helped me get through a boring day at work.

I've always loved the "Gold Experience", but I think after listening to the review, then listening to the album again, I actually think it's better than I first thought. So many highlights!

Now I'm going to give "The Symbol" a spin....

I'd say the building and use of Paisley Park is what started the downhill slide. at least for Prince as a producer.

And now, as said before, may I officially now claim Captain's defence of "My Name Is Prince" as now legend!!...Reminded me of a tenacious Ricky Ponting on a very sticky wicket holding out against England in the Ashes!! Fair play mate!!! I'm not a massive fan, but do love the "Chicka-chick aah" sample orginally from the Cream maxi-single mixes.

Couple of things. I agree mostly with what you guys say in the podcast but I REALLY do not understand the love "The Morning Papers" gets here and all over the org. Really can't. But, like the rest of the album I listened to it again - and no, nothing's changed. Bland, dreary, dreary, bland, Prince-by-numbers power ballad. Oh man. And to then put it up as a Prince standard made me stop in my tracks and had to sit down so I can put my head in my hands and slowly shake my head. Sheeesh! Are you sure?! My brother used to be a massive fan up until "Lovesexy" and then went off on his own musical path. When we have a muscial debate, his ace up his sleeve is "....but Bri, what about the Morning Papers?! Jeeeez" and I'm like "Ah", then have to agree, then have to accept defeat, cos of that fucking tune!! Argh!!! God it's bland. (Although I do like the final buried guitar solo at 3.33 and the "La la la la la laaas". Ahem.)

I also am with Player with "Love to the 9s" and its' twists and turns - I've got big love for this tune - really have. Stunning arrangements, harmonies, progressions, melodies etc. Not with MC at all saying Prince was over-indulging, too 'all over the place', showing off and went too far (and then going on to say how brilliant "3 Chains O Gold" is - really?!). I like Prince when he goes "off-piste" and for me on this track it works even if the Tony M/Mayte sections are not immediately pleasing to the ear - has anybody heard a track like this before? Reminds you of his new work not being as daring.

And finally "The Sacrifice of Victor". Aaah man. Come on guys. This tune should've got ahelluva lot more respect!! Puh-leeeese!!!! It's a big, bouncing truck of funk coming towards you that builds and builds the funk until it passes yo ass with such a joyous sound, I just wanna pass out. Ah man. From 4:30 onwards, pure sonic bliss.
