"When I first heard Prince, I was young, I was in Los Angeles and I became an instant fan. He was my favorite artist in the world. If someone had asked me in early 1983, “What would be your dream, if you were to write down on a piece of paper your fondest wish and hope?,” I would have written down “to work for Prince.” And that actually happened…the dream literally came true."
I know that's right! | |

It was actually the Dream Factory period I would say, i would say SOTT piggybacked off that period, but I love Parade - SOTT timeline

Eye agree! It seems b 4 everything had 2 b crystal clear with Wav files, muziq back then was more real sounding. Its interesting 2 me how most fans now always complain about how crappy his muziq audio sounds. When himself never really cared about all of that. His only mission was 2 get it out of his system as quickly as possible no matter how it sounded. Its the reason maybe now he is not in a rush anymore 2 remaster those recordings..
Eye can't imagine "Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" sounding any other way.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Imagine we know everything that P does in the studio, or even in his private life... Wouldn't the magic be gone ? I mean we all love the man and his work so much for the riddles, the layers, the mysteries and hidden messages. Sure I would read those books. But I'm pretty much convinced that when one starts working for Prince, he has to sign some kind of agreement that states that you can't say or write anything about him in public without his permission, let alone try to write a book. I think the reason why Prince and Susan Rogers are on non speaking terms (I believe) is because of that reason. Otherwise Dez, or Dr. Fink, Mico, one of The Game Boys for example, or any of his past studio technicians would've released a book with (un)spicy inside stories. I remember the podcasts by Michael Koppelman. Very personal and detailed stories about Prince. But mostly about himself though, but still very very interesting and weird. Susan may b the culprit behind how so many of his 80's Vault "MasterPieces" we're leaked out..
I mean she was the only one there 4 years & he wouldn't allow anyone else in the studio with him whatsoever...
Eye can c why now he doesn't trust anyone... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I understand Prince's desire for privacy, but when anyone interacts with another person, that interaction does not belong exclusively to just one of the people.
What Susan Rogers, Wendy, Lisa, whomever, experienced with Prince is JUST AS MUCH their experience as it is his.
For someone who once campaigned against the kind of master/slave narrative encouraged by work-for-hire clauses, Prince sure seems to want to impose that kind of ownership on the lives of his employees, past and probably present. "You work for me, I own your life. You cannot even discuss it." "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

She knows how to write in a way that engages me. Makes me think she's articulate, intelligent, and steadfast. It's easy to dismiss comments when they are along the lines of "He wouldn't know his own music if it bit him in the ass." Instead, she is potentially discussing actual cognitive processes. I have a feeling I'd love to read her book. "I mean I always figured you were a trip at times, but now I'm beginning to believe you're a freaking vacation." -2elijah

I agree, that would be a book for all Prince fans

to me, its second hand knowledge and not coming from the actual source which is Prince himself so Prince is correct in all senses that she doesnt know anything about his music.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Correct me if I'm wrong, but would that mean that "no person knows anything about another person's music"? I suppose is an ok way to view music. But that would mean that a criticism specifically against Susan with regards to this phenomenon isn't particularily unique to her as it holds true for all people.

Susan Rogers knows about Prince's music. She sat in the room with him while he was creating the song. She was there from the moment Prince asked for 'fresh tape' all the way to the final mix and everything in between. She may not know where the inspiration was born, but she witnessed it's growth from simple drum tracks to the version that we enjoy on the CD. She was involved in the layering of the vocals, the mixing of the sounds, the elimination of parts that werent necessary and could see if Prince was outwardly happy, angry, frustrated or just looking for guidance. For Prince to claim that she 'doesn't know anything' about his music is not only a stretch, it is shutting his eyes to the fact that someone else was there at the time and absorbed the vibe of the room. I always thought that was a silly statement by Prince, but he's had years of making odd statements.
I would also say that just about every engineer who worked with him for longer periods of time knew things about his music. It isn't second hand knowledge if you are helping to create the sound via how it is mic'd, how it is mixed, how it is EQ'd, what filters it uses, what processors are in place, who recorded what instrument, who was in the room, the conversations before, during and after and so many other things that make her comments 1st hand information.
In regards to sounds, Susan knows more about the theory of sounds and how they can change moods, etc. then just about anyone else out there. Trust me, she knows more than Prince realizes about how his music was created. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. The reason why I edited it is because I didn't want to come off as being insulting. That isn't my intent here, and if you read through my posts here on the forum, you'll see that I absolutely loathe the musicial snobbery, elitism, and hate that came make these forums suck. My response wasn't an attack, but if not worded well, it could be percieved as such and I decided rather than having it be perceived that way, I could take out what could be misunderstood. It's actually kind of weird, but my response was intended to show that your comment "She doesn't know anything about his music" might be true but that your statement can come off as an attack. And how I did that was by saying: "If I said, you, outsideofthebox, know nothing about Prince's or any artists music" I might be right using that same mentality that no person can know an artist's music. But, that statement seems like an attack, right? If that statement seems like an attack, to me it is similar to how statements concerning Susan's ability to understand Prince's music, even if true, could come across as an attack. That was the point. It wasn't personally an attack. "I mean I always figured you were a trip at times, but now I'm beginning to believe you're a freaking vacation." -2elijah

I think when Prince said that statement, he was expressing his frustations with people offering their takes on his music and acting as though they know his music more than he does. Since Prince rarely talks about his own music, he might have felt some kind of way, about Susan Rogers take on the inspiration of certain songs. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Prince get's frustrated at his fans wanting to watch his videos
at that time in Prince history he just seemed frustrated,
I don't think Susan ever said anything arrogant in any way that suggests that she knows more about his music
That would be disrespectful of him, to think she is some airhead just doing whatever he told her without her understand the processes and flow of music.
Her 2006 response was perfect.
If an artist has some private interpretation of his/her art, then they should keep it to themselves When you release art for others to take in, you will get all kinds of interpretations
What songs has she talked about that he might have felt some kind of way about?
Prince's response is promted from her 'rejecting him' Blue Tuesday http://prince.org/msg/7/301440

Here is what I mean. You're not getting what I am trying to get across, and it probably is my fault because I'm not explaining it well enough. Which is why I deleted what I deleted.
