Your words paint a thousand pictures in my mind. Set free the quill and crayon, throw open the doors of their cages, let them scribble on walls of rememberance. Then gather them safely back in their buses.
I can almost smell the horse-burgers. Beautiful.

Ya know what I hate about each time Prince becomes active? No not all the vampires in Santa Cruz (Lost Boys) ..but all of the new trolls that suddenly crop up "Climb in my fur."

wait a minute. was this the tower records that used to be in buisness in atlanta,ga? because me and my uncle missed that autograph signing because we found out about it late and a record store owner "perry" of rainy day records that used to exist had Prince's autograph on the purple vinyl of purple rain and I had asked him about that time and he said that he was going to keep it. I know because I was his best customer the entire time when he was in buisness and used to visit his record shop all the time. so perry if you are out there, where have you been, man? the last time I spoke with him was the last day of buisness when they were moving their record shop to florida back in early 1995.

Well I have a pretty funny story about going to the signing at Tower Records that day if you'd like to read about it. It was in July I believe and I had found out from someone that Prince would be signing at the Tower Records on 4th Street. It was when he was here to perform Lovesign on the Today Show with Nona Gaye.
I actually had a job interview that day somewhat near there, so I was hoping that I could get to see Prince before I had to get to the interview. I really had to go to this interview because earlier that year I had broken my foot and it had cost me my job. My roomate who was also helping me keep up the apartment got me an interview where he worked, so I really had to go to it.... but it was my chance to see Prince! I tried to show up early and I was pretty close, but the line was all the way down the block, so we were out there for hours. There were rumors going through the line that he'd ONLY sign something for you if it was his new single (TMBGITW), and people with their Purple Rain albums were all worried. I was glad that I had brought my copy of The Beautiful Experience! Turned out not to be true of course.
I was in line with a guy I knew who was a real slick dude and a huge Prince fan. Every time I would bump in to this guy he was dressed to the 9's from head to toe in some real sharp duds. And he always had a small picture of himself pinned to his pimp hat! So the time came when I really had to split the scene to be on time for the interview, but the line hadn't started moving yet, so my friend said he'd hold my place in line while he could in case I made it back and off I went. I swear I ran from 4th Street & Broadway to W13th street & 8th ave the whole way, and in the July heat! By the time I got there I was a total sweaty panting mess! I took a few minutes to pull it together, change from my Prince shirt to something more fitting, and then up I went. It's funny too because I remember the guy saying I looked really hot, and I probably said something about the July heat and he offered to turn on a desk fan and pointed at me So I'm sitting there trying to do my very best with this interview and you know that the whole time I'm trying so hard to not keep thinking about how I was totally blowing the chance to meet Prince!
Now you'd have to know that I was 22 y/o at the time & had just moved to NYC the year before. This was like one of the grand perks of life in this exciting new world! I'd never get to meet Prince one of my favorite artists of all time back home. Well maybe in Boston, but I had lived an hour outside of Boston then. This was just a matter of some blocks from where I lived in the East Village. The chance to meet Prince!
So the interview goes well and I finally get out and of course then I run all the way back down to 4th St. and when I get there the line was still there & moving now. As I run up to try to find my friend, he yells out my name from right at the front door! He was like the next person about to go in and was looking around in a last attemp to see if I had made it back, and there I was running across the street! So I get to the door and he is trying to convince the security that I had been out in line with him all day and I should be able to go in. Of course I know how BS it looked, but it was true and I think they had given out wristbands to the line & I had one, so at the last second the guy let me in. Were were almost the last two people let in as they were just locking it up. There were still people lined up down the block, so I ended up being REAL LUCKY that I made it. But there I was! we couldn't quite see him yet because now we were on a line inside, but when we eventually turned a corner and were facing a long table that had Prince and all of the NPG of that time seated along it, including Mayte(!!) & Nona. And there he was, the first time I had ever seen him up close, and I'll tell you that it's cazy how he is such a small person, but has such a huge presence! just sitting there at the table in some crazy outfit and wearing dark shades you were just like: holy shit !! this is PRINCE!!! Now when I was waiting on the line all day I was trying to think of something I would say to him if there was a chance. I would want to say something that would show him what a die hard I was, that I was no "Purple Rain Fan" Now this was just when he had changed his name So when it was my turn to stand in front of him, I recited a line from the song "Now" about his name change. "Now" was a song that wasn't released until the next year when TGE came out. I had heard it on the booleg of the Paisley Park show he'd played in Feb where he played a bunch of songs for the first time. I was like, I got him good, I said a line from a song that hasn't even been released yet and it's about his name change too! Current and topical! Man I am cracking up as I type this! Anyways, of course at that time I had no idea about his crazy stance against bootlegs. I though he'd be impressed! I'll never forget though that his reaction was that sly Prince/Christopher Tracy smile that crept up under his dark shades and i was like: YES! Then I blabbed something for a quick second about how awseome he is and that I hoped that he'd always put out music because it adds so much to our lives, and he said thank you and then that was it, i was moving down the table.
Another funny thing was that this was right when he changed his name, so all day in line people were trying to quess as to how he was going to sign his name. He wasn't Prince anymore, so he's not going to sign Prince is he? Will he make some cool elaborate symbol? Well when it came down to it he just scralled some quick lollypop looking thing! Well it was a such a fun experience and I've since ended up waiting in many long lines for hours and overnight to get to see Prince in some excellent situations while living here. One of the delights of NYC living!

Chewymusic, now that's a story! Thank you for that Sounds like a very exciting day in NYC. I love New York, and I love Prince, so I can kind of imagine your excitement. I lived in New York, and the only celebrities I saw were Joan Rivers, Wavy Gravy, Ron Howard, and Michael Musto, lol. Got to see Dr John at B.B. King's, George Clinton and Funkadelic art Roseland, and Farm Aid. I sure miss NYC dearly. Closest I ever got to Prince was seeing him from the third tier in the Staples Center, and that was pretty damn awesome. Hold on to that CD and those memories. Shit Chewy, what are you, Air Sea Rescue or what?
Talk about saving a thread. I enjoyed reading that.
Reminds me of when I tried to catch him at a signing. Mine didn't go so well. I was 17 in '88 and I'd just seen my first P gig. I was back at work a day or so later when I heard on the radio he'd be at Tower Records on Oxford Street. I shot off home from work, grabbed a few albums and jumped on the train. When I got there he'd already been and gone, I missed him by half hour or so?
When I got back to work I was called in the office and asked where I'd been. I woulda made something up but the boss was relishing the moment a bit too much expecting me to wriggle. I told him straight what had happened and he sacked me on the spot. I didn't mind, gave me more time to go record shopping.

To carry through on this dream I'm working hard on been a millionaire.....so all donations taken and the coolest donars will get invited to this gig.....Chewie you are there for sure ..... with your $30,000 donation of course!!!

Forget that long ass boring story about the job interview, and cutting in line at the Wreck A Stow to meet Prince, this is a great post. I really like the part about where he clowns on Prince for having Witness 4 The Prosecution in the vault and Jughead released.

I'm not so sure? I mean, when I tried to catch him at both Tower Records and HMV I missed him, like I said. That was way back in '88 though and things were different then. Some of us planted time capsules all over the place, pre-empting these kind of threadlocks without dreadlocks situations.
Some hid their capsules in some strange places. Some just put em in a little charm and wore them round their necks on a chain, much like what we'd often call a necklace. Some were secreted in lovehearts, representing the lovesexy . Others were tucked in the back of grannys cupboard and some were just left lying about, mostly down to laziness. Some were left in slippers.
This picture was sent to me in the strictest confidence. Those that should ever look upon it must promise to only look at the loveheart. Nothing else, just the loveheart. I'm confident I can trust everyone to adhere to those wishes and encourage the thread to blossom and grow.
