Well here's my OPINION:
To the point of a preview, sure, it would be nice, but...
Back in the day when I was a young'un and went to the record store (remember those) to buy music, I didn't get any previews. I would have my hard earned allowance that I saved from weeks of doing chores and could pick 1 album (cassette usually). All I had to go on was album covers and whatever single might be on the radio. My money was more limited than it is now and albums were more expensive than these singles but I still bought them.
To the point of "all these songs about sex". You do know this is Prince, right?
Back when the Dutch Free Record Shop actually sold any music and still had vinyl they usually had a record player and later of course a CD-pplayer to check out a record.
Was that not so common where you live?
It was common in the 90s, but I never saw anything like that in the 80s. Even in the 90s it was usually a station with hot new releases to preview, but no way to preview any and all CDs I might be interested in.
The only previews I had in the 80s was radio and MTV...

There really needs to be a preview button for these songs. Every time I've bought songs online, I preview them first. I don't care how much it is, I want to hear at least a snippet first. After a couple of days, I finally managed to hear the song somewhere else. No thanks. If I liked it, I could easily grap the audio from the video, but I would have legally bought it. I didn't do either. I listened to it a few times. It just doesn't grab me. Also, I don't really get into all these songs about sex. It's fine to have pop song about it, but I just think his latest releases sound very immature. It's not appealing to me in the least. That's my OPINION, no need to tell me how wrong I am.

Except this isn't "back in the day." This is 2013. Having digital singles to buy is just fine. That way you can buy just what you like. I did that on Amazon with Andy Allo's album. I didn't like a couple of the songs, and just bought and downloaded what I wanted, but at least I could hear a preview first. I prefer to try before buying when available.
And I suppose I just didn't make myself clear about the sexual lyrics. It's all fine and good. I just think he sounds silly at his age with his choice of sexual lyrics. |

i agree about a preview snippet. i even use it on itunes just to make sure its the track/version i was lookin for. what with all the sneak peaks he released earlier it's nice to be able to see if it's a verison you have or not (or want to get in better quality). even a track length would be helpful! |

Ok song, maybe a little better than Screwdriver. As someone who is usually liking new Prince music as much or more than anyone, I am a little underwhelmed at this time. I think RNR Affair Extended Mix from the Cd Single is still my favorite of the recent tracks. Only reason to buy that single, as the Jamie Mixes are pretty much the standard Remix Crap that has been a low point with Prince after about 1991. Yeah, that Gett Off Cd Single was the end of an era...95% of the mixes since than have been pretty bad. |

In the 80's I never had trouble finding a Wreck A Stow with vinyl preview available on many items. For most, if there was a used copy, you could listen to make sure it was in good condition, and that you liked. I stopped going to shops around 2004, but did find a great one in Bowling Green, Kentucky of all places. Lots of great Vinyl there. |

Yes, I know you're being a smart ass, but it's NOT about the price, and it NEVER has been. It's the principle of the matter. It could be just be $0.01, and it'd still be too much for the substandard quality of product he's putting out there. And because of that, I refuse to give him my money for stuff like this and will continue to use "alternate methods" of receiving this material.
Hell, with your rationale, if he charged $5.00, it'd be okay to some of you because $5 won't make or break someone. "Hey, you can't even buy 2 gallons of gas for your car for $5." Most of you here would probably pay that amount for a recording of him taking a shit for 3 minutes (which he has essentially already done with this "Boyfriend" track, mind you) and then tout it as, "Who else out there is doing something that avant-garde?? What a genius! You guys are just HATERS if you don't see the genius in that track, and just think, he's nearly 55 and STILL recording!! We MUST fawn over him!"
Well, I did say I wouldn't pay any amount, so with my rationale $5 per track would be too much, even though 2 gallons of petrol costs the equivalent of about $19 over here. I guess you also missed my complaining about the quality of some of the downloads offered. No fawning here. But that aside I've loved the new stuff and don't think it's sub standard at all. If the material is so bad, why do you even bother with 'alternate' methods of getting it? There must be some value in it if you keep searching it out. There's only one conclusion, you're a tight fisted thief. If it's that bad why bother at all? One question. If you got a new track through alternate means and liked it, would you then go to 3rdeye and buy it?
Sometimes people actually just email the crap to me, and because I actually listen to something before I make a judgment, I, then, listen to it (long enough until I start to gag, if it's bad enough).
Or should I do what a lot of you accuse Bart and all other "haters" of doing, which is making my mind up about if before I've seen or listened to it? So, sounds like there's more than just your one so-called conclusion, doesn't it?
Oh, and to answer your other question, if he released - and released RIGHT - some actually DECENT material (like probably the vault, but with him he'd probably even fuck THAT up), then I don't mind ponying up funds. But he's got a loooooong way to go until then, I can guarantee.
You can label me a "thief" if you want to, but NONE of you would probably be here if you hadn't listened to/downloaded/copied/traded for/bought (for us old schoolers) Prince bootlegs at some time. So, please let's not start acting all high and mighty. Let's not start throwing stones from our glass balconies, okay? |

If you intend to d/load the files you claim to not like - buy them, and support the artist
This material is officially released - why illegally d/load stuff you calim is 'substandard' - I wouldn't bother - then could relate to your argument. But the fact you've stolen it makes your argument lame
As I said above, I won't know it's substandard for sure until I listen to it. I actually give things a try before I condemn it.
And like I also said above, so I take it you've never ever heard a Prince bootleg before?? Hmm? |

The difference there is that we aren't able to give Prince our money for that stuff. This new material is commercially available, and there is no valid argument for not paying for it. |

I know, right? "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker," really? But to compare any of this stuff to TBODP (or even "Nasty Girl" for that matter) just DOES NOT COMPUTE. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

It's also pretty disingenuous. Prince's lyrics have been weak for a long time now, but even when that wasn't true, stuff like "Dorthy Parker" was the exception, not the rule. Do folks not remember that "It" was the next track on SOTT? [Edited 2/17/13 19:47pm] |

That weak argument regarding "It" has been tackled already above. And Dorothy Parker wasn't so much an exception as simply part of a different class since Prince has so many different classes of music. It does a disservice to Prince to suggst D.P was some exception.
Also, the fact that people suggest "It" is somehow a superficial song shows that many Prince fans simply skate on the surface of his music. |

But a thief is still a thief, no matter if you don't buy something of his now but get it some other way or if you bought bootlegs KNOWING he wouldn't see a penny for them AND that they were stolen (by this I mean they weren't meant to be sold or to be consumed by the public by him) from him to begin with. Stop trying to say one way of thievery is better than another.
Again, stop acting so high and mighty, whether it be you or anyone else wanting to throw this word around. |

But you're talking about a track - "It" - that was surrounded by other brilliant, funky ass music! SOTT, as a whole, was a TRUE "masterpiece" (unlike all the crap people around here say his recent stuff is)!! And even "It" had decent enough music AND enough great vocal delivery to make you not even notice and/or care that the lyrics weren't anything to write home about. You can't say that - without busting up with laughter at least - about ANY of his current output. You really can't. |

I would never suggest that Prince's current music is on par with his best week (though I do enjoy it): What I'm suggesting that when we're talking about his lyrics, holding up an outlier isn't really fair. Even during his heyday, I'd argue that the majority of his lyrics were closer in calibre to "Boyfriend" than "Dorothy Parker". Side note: I really don't understand why people are singling out this track as an example of his lyrical dross, when we just recently received a song that features the incredibly trite sentiment "I think you're great". |

Well, as you note: I haven't used the word thief here, but I think there is a difference. In one scenario, you've got a diehard fan, desperate to hear whatever he can, resorting to buying a boot in order to do so. In 2013 there's no reason to pay for that boot, of course, but that wasn't always the case. As for the stuff going up on 3rdEyeGirl.com: regardless of whether you like the material or not, there's nothing standing in your way to pay for it. In fact, it would seem to me that finding it for free is actually MORE difficult. Faced with that reality, and without trying to come off holier than thou, how can you justify not paying for it? |
