* BOYFRIEND! (NEW SONG!) ~Prince/3rd EYE Girl

In WAV format.

Hard to place in the context of his body of work... the beat/rhythm is kind of slowed down version of "Nasty Girl."

it's a funky track, nice bass line, slinking horns, and more sassy lyrics from Prince : "please keep your boyfriend away from me, 'cuz I just dont want to fight // I will not take responsibility for where you sleep tonight."

For people who are not seeing it, I don't know if it's been updated on the Home page yet... Click "View Cart" without making any selection, then "Return to Shop" and it shows up (well that's how I found it).

What does it sound like? Looks like it's already taken down.

Prince's website was created by Stevie Wonder.

Just added more info in my edit. Just got it so still digesting. More along the lines of "Breakfast Can Wait" in terms of genre.

It's an 'okay' track. Have to give it a few more listens yet.

I don't see it, either. I do see additional items if I "view cart" then go "back to shop" as you suggested, though. This is what I see:

I would guess that "Screwdriver Video" and "Screwdriver Live" are the same things.

Edit - or, as RRA suggests below and in a separate thread - "Screwdriver Video" is the lyric video that was shown on 20pr1nc3.com when it launched.

rd,

You wanted quirkiness in the music. Maybe, someone felt the same way?

I love the subtle jazzy elements percolating throughout this funky number, as well as the gorgeous bass plucks. On first listen, it seems like a more refined, nuanced, number in the vein of Breakfast Can Wait, but more elegant in terms of musicianship a la Dorothy Parker, with live sounding instrumentation in the studio.

A GREAT little funky track, in my opinion.

love,

Spirit

Actually, and I put up a thread about those new additions...I'm assuming they're the lyric video.

Assuming, I must mention. Who's got spare 1.77 to find out?

Anyway, yes I guess P and his people do roam this message board if indeed BF is in WAV. Is the AV Club happy now?

Lyrically, he seems to be toying with a similar concept to What Do You Want Me To Do? But this time his answer is in the affirmative. It also has more than a passing resemblance to that number, but suitably different.

THANK YOU for the heads up, Zaheer. How on earth did you stumble across this?! It's almost impossible to find...

There is nothing there..even when doing what NuPwrSoul suggested .. and I don't see the "extra" Screwdriver videos either.

The more I listen to it, the more I realise that he is being SERIOUSLY devillish with this song:

"I will not take responsibility for where you sleep tonight"

"From what your body told me, you and I would get along"

"...my name upon your walls..."

After Breakfast Can Wait and Boyfriend, one must wonder who has inspired these double entendres...

Ha! I actually feel sorry for the boyfriend she is cheating on. Prince is clearly absolving himself of responsibility, which seems interesting given his spiritual beliefs.

Because the tempo reminds me of a slowed down "Nasty Girl" I kept imagining Prince singing this to Vanity re: Rick James.

Interesting.

That thought didn't occur to me, but the scenario certainly makes sense (especially as he is concerned about the boyfriend finding out what's happening behind closer doors). What did come to mind, though, is that he clearly cannot not be with Andy exclusively, as this seems like a very different type of girl.

"Don't ask for my opinion. Cos I just can't hold my tongue

But under his dominion, you won't be having fun

He sees you as possession, when I just see a queen

Closer to perfection than any I have ever seen"

The closer I listen, I am hearing all the jazz licks, and bass kicks, in-between all the lyrics. It's amazing that he has crafted so much musicianship within a relatively short song.

Spirit

I agree that the lyrics are more updated... but the "Boyfriend" Prince is describing here sound like a younger Prince--possessive, demanding, controlling--from what we have been told/read/etc. from exes.

But as for the music, I completely agree with you... I may not have been excited by all his recent output over the last decade, but one thing is true, he has become a much much better musician as far as technique is concerned. Technically speaking this is a very complex song in terms of production and arrangement... the placement of sounds is so exact and specific yet it feels loose and organic.

Great point regarding who the boyfriend character is, because it's almost as if he is describing how the younger Prince was, by all accounts ... controlling/possessive.

And I absolutely agree with regards to the musicianship on this song; I actually think out of all the new songs, this one takes us to a masterclass of song craftmanship.

It's interesting. I actually loved Breakfast Can Wait, but when I play it now back to back against Boyfriend, it kind of pales in comparison, which is quite something.

Is that the Linn drum on this song? I can't work out if it is coupled with live drumming.

Spirit

Yeah, this is fuckin great. This is what we all need.

A few pop up websites, wild goose chases and now I'm staring at old three-eyes for 5 minutes clicking ghosted 'add to basket' buttons. I daren't click 'Terms of service' cos it'll prolly just pop up with the answer "Pretty shit" and fade to a black screen. neutral

Don't be an ass. It obviously was uploaded accidentally, and it will go back up soon enough. Even iTunes has been known to make the same mistake.
