Sinead O'Connor "detests" pop star Prince, the man who wrote her biggest hit, and became embroiled in a "violent" clash with him when they first met.

The Irish singer shot to worldwide fame in 1990 with her cover of Prince's song "Nothing Compares 2 U," but has confessed she loathes the "Purple Rain" star. She alleges they had a huge bust-up when they met, but she is keeping details of the dispute a secret until she writes her memoirs.

"I loved his music, but I had absolutely no idea or expectation that that single would be such a big hit, not at all," O'Connor told Britain's Uncut magazine. "Did I ever meet Prince? I did and ... we didn't like each other. At all. Ha ha! I'm not going to go into it, but we detest each other ... It got violent too, which is why I can't go into it, but it is a very funny story. I'll tell it when I'm an old lady and I write my book."

She's quite, quite fabulous.

A few thoughts:

1. Would you know who Sinead is/was without Prince?

2. Did Prince detest "foul language" as far back as 1990?

3. Threats of physical violence? Really?

4. She could've taken him back then, and definitely looks like she could now too.

5. Doesn't this ultimatley boil down to: Who's crazier? Who do you trust? Hubbahubbahubba.

Those who 'Like' Sinead, I really feel this affection is given because of her relationship with Prince. I doubt that claim to like her, would if she did not speak about this 'Violent' instance she had with Prince.

I think she looks much better bald, and I remember a few stories about her. She seems very (As we say in New Orleans) 'Throwed Off'. A bit unbalanced and as if she is yearning for something she possibly believes she doesn't want? I don't know..but this new is old News...

She actually has a pretty big fan base. "Nothing Compares 2 U" just made her a crossover act, but she really was never one.

The Lion And The Cobra is a wonderful album, and I had high hopes for her after that.

It's a shame that the two of them can't see eye to eye.

She's still a great singer, albeit the fire has dimmed, but man..she needs a stylist. Someone needs to take her in hand, she looks alarmingly like Benny Hill in that photograph.

Her music was cool back in the day, but she's an absolute nutter.

Whereas Prince might not be normal per se (then again, who is?), he certainly is sane at least. Sinead isn't.

the truth is she's has produced some incredible albums since the early 90's. Faith and Courage is exceptional. Gospel Oak, lovely...and her latest shows she hasn't lost her spirit or fire. At least Sinead doesn't have trouble articulating where she's coming from. What the hell is so cray about that??

Maybe crazy is an unfair characterization, bi-polar is perhaps the correct clinical designation. Maybe we can ask that poor guy she married, divorced, and married again, and then dumped a second time what he thinks of her mental state...

The couple met online four months ago after Barry responded to a plea by unlucky-in-love Sinead asking for potential suitors to come forward. They married on December 8 in a quickie wedding at the famous Little White Chapel in the Nevada state. Sinead told The Sun that she took him on a search for cannabis afterwards. 'We ended up in a cab in some place that was quite dangerous.

'I wasn't scared — but he's a drugs counsellor. What was I thinking? 'Then I was handed a load of crack. Barry was very frightened — that kind of messed everything up a bit really.'

Lots of threads on this topic, those above are just a few.

Sinead is amazing and I still love her album from last year, "How About I Be Me (And You Be You)?" - in fact, the video that recently came out for "4th and Vine" is my go-to when I'm feeling blue, because it never fails to make me dance like a damn fool.

And yes, I knew who she was before she covered a Prince song. The more appropriate question would be, did most Prince fans know "Nothing Compares 2 U" before she covered it?
