Thinking about Bsides.

So, Over the past month i decided to listen to some Bsides something i'd never really done before. SO i started off with The Hits/Bsides. It's probably one of my favorite discs and for the general population who b ough the collection probably just skipped over it. I'm 18 so this was the first time i was hearing any of these Bsides except for the classic Erotic City. I really dig la la la hee, scarlet pussy, irresistable bitch, she's always, feel u up, i love u in me, how come u don't call me anymore, and 17 days(and erotic city). The rest to me seems faily dececnt. It's just hard for me to imagine that these songs weren't placed on any albums given their awesomeness. U'd think they'd be alot crappier or more expiremental however they are some of his best work.

My question to u guys is if u had to rank the bsides on the greatest hits collection like a studio Prince album release where would u rank it? And are there any Bsides that are not on the collection that i should check out?

Personally, my favorite B-sides (A sides as well) come from the "Around the World in a Day" album. I'm a fan of all of them but that's the group that I listen to the most. My other fav's would be "Irrestible Bitch", "Shockadelica", "17 Days", "Erotic City", "Scarlet Pussy" and "La,La, He, He". . You should do yourself a favor( no prince title pun inteaded) and seek out all the 12 inch vinyl releases from "Lets Work" to "Hot Thing" and the Lovesexy cd singles through the "Gett Off" cd singles. 90% of the bsides on the Hits are edits and if you enjoy the edits you'll definetly enjoy the longer 12" versions. Also, don't sleep on the extended or remixed Asides. Theres alot of Gold(no Prince title pun inteaded) to mine though with those. Enjoy ! You have a lot of excellent music to enjoy.

Peace

Big Chick

Nope. Somebody made a bootleg cd of the 12" versions, but that's years ago and would be even harder to find than the original maxi singles. Get yerself a record player! It doesn't have to be expensive.

In an alternate universe, the B-Sides were never B-Sides. This is my alternate universe, where Prince's career is exactly the same from 1978-1984, except that the B-Sides were album tracks from the current album or previous albums. The best B-Sides would be saved for future albums, and the lesser quality ones would have been on Huge Outtake releases. My 1987 album release for him as his "Manager" would be the Purple Rain follow up, and I've taken this from a project I've been working on...and I think I posted this somewhere else on this site, and nearly everybody hated it. Even though with a major album release every 3 years, his image stays fresh and in demand, instead of over saturating the market...and this album would be:

CD 1: 67:24
Crystal Ball 1028
Sign "O" The Times – 4:57
Play in the Sunshine – 5:05
U Got the Look – 3:47
If I Was Your Girlfriend – 5:01
Strange Relationship – 4:01
Kiss 3:46
I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man 6:29
Around the World in a Day 3:28
Paisley Park 4:42
Condition of the Heart 6:48
Girls & Boys 5:29
Life Can Be So Nice 3:13

CD 2: 69:18
Erotic City 7:24
Irresistible Bitch 4:12
17 Days 3:55
How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? 3:51
Another Lonely Christmas 4:52
Housequake 4:42
Dream Factory 2:38
Train 4:19
Rockhard In A Funky Place 4:30
Witness 4 The Prosecution 3:58
She's Always in My Hair 3:27
The Ballad of Dorothy Parker 4:01
In A Large Room With No Light 3:15
Starfish and Coffee 2:50
Slow Love 4:22
Forever in My Life 3:30
Old Friends 4 Sale 3:32

Make sure you DON'T listen to Another Lonely Christmas until you're listening to the 12" version... that 7" edit is the most painful butcher-job of them all!

The best B-side that is strangeley absent from that set is Alexa De Paris (as is its A-Side, Mountains).

I sure do envy you, hearing this stuff for the first time! biggrin

In most cases as far as the 1980's B sides, they had nothing to do with quality, I think it was just more about how it did/did not configure with the rest of the album and space

I think ATWIAD has the best and all of them could have worked 100% within the album

Purple Rain, the Bsides weren't featured in the movie so I understand them not being on the album/soundtrack, but outtakes like Possessed, God the love theme were in the movie

Parade was different, because it featured Bside and touches of outtakes in the film

after 1986 the amount per album dropped off

I remember being slightly disappointed to see that the ICNTTPOYM single didn't have a brand-new song on the back. Especially considering everything that was going on at the time. Although come to think of it, Anotherlover was maybe the first offender in that category...

True,

For Parade, it really didn't make sense 4 him not to release a 3rd B side, with all the outtakes from that album

Sign o the Times, it seems he didn't want to pull from any more DFactory cuts, the 2 B sides were unrelated cuts, He definately should have had a 3rd, but before the year was done yet the Black album was ready to go, I wonder if he didn't create another B side for SOTT because he was just ready for the period to be over and move on since he couldn't have his way with the Crystal Ball set

Lovesexy is another, that you can see the drop off, because Scarlett Pussy (which in my opinion sound like it could have been a SOTT piece (Sheila E 4th album outtake) feels like Shockadelica & La La La He He Hee.

I like Escape but a few other outtakes/Bsides would have been nice for that album. In my opinion a lot of those Batman songs/outtakes were already created probably during the Lovesexy period so he could have set out a few more B sides.

It's also slightly censored in the 7" version, I believe, as the word 'gay' appears to be clipped so short you can barely make it out (which, if true, is ridiculous, since it doesn't exactly take a poetry professor to see where that particular rhyme was going). Anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that one, though...
