He can be so frustrating. So much energy spent tantalizing his fans..... He dah man though!

Well if he says "no new album," maybe he means it. He seems to back up the claim in the article, reasoning it's because he doesn't have a record deal. Maybe he would rather not release a record without some kind of deal for whatever reason.
For now, he will just release various tracks for sale on his site and if/when he has a deal he's satisfied with, he'll put out on album. Also, I don't see him having a deal lined up from when the interview was conducted to now.
Perhaps if he doesn't find a deal he likes, he will try to sell an album himself. But it would appear that he doesn't want to be arsed with that mess. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

Maybe it will be sold online on 2013.com site like Radiohed did theres? "Climb in my fur."

I still think there is a new album ready and he will sell it trough his website but if he does that then only fans will know about the album and buy it. There must be a way he can work out a deal, is it really that hard? Other artists has no problem with this. Welcome 2 The Dawn

if there's no new album.... what's all the promotion for?
the Billboard cover story, the Billboard icon award, 3rdEyeGirl leaks, band & Dr. Dingleberry interviews, rehearsals for a tour, the club dates, overseas promo appearances, listening party, the new website, new songs, etc.
all in the span of 2 weeks. or less.
this is the kind of stuff that only happens, en masse, when there's an album on the way.
dude's full of shit. as always.

as long as he'll release two albums worth of material on that site i'm fine with not having another 'album' just yet.
it does seem weird though that an artist like prince would not be able to get a record deal for an album. especially since it's only a distribution deal for the main part as prince will be shopping a finished article around.
perhaps they aren't offering him enough money? but then those magazine/newspaper deals made him a lot of money didn't they? so why not go that route again, but this time in the us?
besides, i'm still quite convinced that he has a new album ready to go. he's just toying with ideas.
with everything going on right now, i'm sure things won't stop in their tracks just yet. there's more coming. there usually is.

I can't see the newspaper model working in the U.S. Only a few newspapers (USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times) have a national circulation here, and those papers never come with CDs or other goodies. Local newspapers are struggling to stay alive as people cancel their print subscriptions and refuse to pay for online content.
Sure, he could get a distribution deal for a new CD, but what does that mean these days anyway? There are a few chain stores that still stock physical CDs, such as Target and Best Buy, both of which were burned by previous deals with Prince (Lotusflow3r and The Rainbow Children respectively). I don't see him getting another deal like that. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

i see. well that does limit his options indeed. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Can't wait for the new album.

I love this. And it's answers the O.P. There are only 3 things for sure in life. 1. We're all born 2. We all die 3. Prince will release another album one of these days. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I hope by "jams" he means 7-10 minutes or longer songs. To me that is a jam

I think the point of that press release, which we didn't know at the time, is that new recordings would be done by not Prince. So on a technicality he was right. Hopefully this no album thing will have a technicality work around, too. [Edited 1/22/13 22:17pm] "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

He's done this before remember? Chocolate Invasion & Slaughterhouse were not intended albums but a collections of singles.

his last few albums also seem to hang as just a collection of songs with no real concept. Planet Earth, 20Ten spring to mind.
Don't know if I'm that bothered, i'd love a return to the NPG Music club monthly random stuff that was just brilliant. All I want is quality..simple!.

So instead of adding more nicely packaged commercial CDs to my prince collection.. I get to have a bunch of genetic burned CDs. No thanks. And Call me old school, but I like going through my CDs, looking at the inserts, reading info, etc.. Not scrolling through an iPod.

He should do a publishing deal with iPad format magazines or newspapers. That would be great. You download a magazine and it directs you to iTunes for example for full album free download. I think it could be a good deal for the newspapers also. If you already download that app and pay for one magazine/paper then it is quite likely that some of those people will continue subscribing that newspaper in the future. Or he could do it with 2-5 new songs also, but teasing us with one song would not make sense, then iTunes is easier way..

all well and good until you find out how much Apple collects. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Which of course is why I'm not terribly excited about what he may be distributing to us this time around. An artist who doesn't see his art as a singular work, like lovesexy, but just a collection of jams, probably isn't as invested in the whole of the material he releases. It's like reading interesting chapters that don't amount to a cohesive novel. It's not the same thing. LAWD

yup. which is what the RIAA negotiated. so it would be up to the label to pay more to the artist out of their percentage. but then you've got mechanical royalties for songwriters, producers, etc. that would be coming out of their end as well....
in Prince's case, he'd be getting 66% no? at least on the stuff not owned by WB.

I wonder about his feelings about the entire picture. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
we know his feelings. he wants an advance. which is exactly how his problems with the recording industry started.
and since iTunes and Amazon won't give him one, and he's too proud to go back to a label, he'll get it by hook or by crook, either from a big box retailer (Target), a newspaper (or 2), or directly from his fans (Crystal Ball, lotu$failure.com).

which is what i find so hard to understand. if he's got, say 300.000 fans globally who are willing to buy his new album, he should just put it on itunes or on his own site and make 300.000 times however much the album sells for.
that's only logical.
why would he want a $ 5,000,000 advance when in reality he'll probably only sell enough units to collect about $ 3,000,000?
even prince can see that's not really fair to anyone but him
you can't expect people to keep giving you huge advances and be sitting on a couple of hundred thousand unsold records and then welcome you with open arms again the next time you shop your album around.
i'm surprised they give anyone an advance these days.
what's wrong with just putting your shit on itunes and collecting cash for every unit you sell? that seems the most fair way to me. and the most reasonable.
