What did author meant to say?

Do you thing the messages of Prince's songs are direct and clear or his songs sugest different views then what seems obvious? Wendy and Lisa said that Prince is like what you see is what you get.Is Little Red Corvette a song about car or innuendo for a sex? Or Raspberry Berret about a berret ? smile

Fonkyi've seen when Wendy and Lisa said about Prince's lyrics something like what you see is what you get .they said it in those 3 parts fan interview .

so i was wondering what the orgers think.

Is Prince really that simple?

for example when you listen to a song Dancing In the Dark by Springsteen

if you don't get into lyrics a bit more ,you will think it's a love song but it's not it's song

about not being able to write a hit or that is just one of the interpretations.

So is Prince creative song writter with a songs that can be interpretated in many ways or is he is superficial when he writes, there's no hidden message???

I think that if Wendy said "what you see is what you get" she did not mean Little Red Corvette is about a car.

those band members being so interconnected into Prince during that formative period:Erotic City Uptown Paisley Park Purple Music etc etc a time when he seemed to have had a very formed vision including the proteges and how everything fit,

when they said what you see is what you get, they are most likely talking from their place in that vision outward.

So for Lisa to say in Little Red Corvette what you see is what you get she probably knows it's about a woman, I think they know Sex Love Masturbation God Party are very important and regular topics of 'discussion' through Prince music

OLdfriend thank you for contributing and not mocking my thread like the other posters.Lisa said it about Prince's overall lyrics ,she didn't talk about Little Red Corvette

I've never been that impressed by the use of metaphors. For some reason people seem to think that using them is a sign of high intelligence or creativity. You're usually just being vague for the sake of being vague and people tend to be easily impressed (especially the younger audiences).

Prince has achieved far much more by expressing his thoughts and feelings in a more direct manner in his songs. That's not to say a song like "If I Was Your Girlfriend" wouldn't require some attention from the listener to realize what the song is really about.

He uses irony from time to time, but he doesn't rely on it like many newer artists do. If the artist doesn't really mean anything he says in his lyrics it gets annoying after a while. Besides, I think that Prince writes quite good "party" lyrics (it's not as easy as you'd think).

Why is it superficial if there's no symbolism or hidden message?

And what's wrong if the song is about a car?

If I could write music & lyrics, I would write about furniture, because I love interiour design. And I would write a ballad to my cat, because I love him and he makes me laugh every day.

Would that make me a shallow person?

Or would I be genius if I also wrote about&politics, alcoholics, wealth that can only exist if other people get exploited, why people love to own weapons, designed for the sole purpose of killing.

And the meaning of a song is really up to anybody his/her own interpretation. Just like art.

Thanks for the tip. Love it.

My cat does responds stronger to the demo with David Bowie than to the official release.

Still, Jack Johnson really is his alltime favorite.

I'll play Jack Johnson on his birthday only. That's enough for the whole year.

And sometimes I'll tune in on classical music for him. If he's good.

He's always very grumpy about performances. He never wants to go to a gig with me. He always stays inside the house, curled up, and demanding radio 4 (classic). He acts all cool and doesn't really care about the shows. He's a true elite snob, he claims he's only interested in the music, not about the star. Pfffff.
