What do u think of Prince changing Musicians every few yrs? Do u think its a plus or minus that Prince's Musicians seem to be on a forever carousel? They're here for a few years or so and then they are replaced/on to another mix; unlike other famous bands that stay together like The Rolling Stones, U2, etc. etc. [Edited 1/9/13 0:31am]

Prince isn't a band. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I think it's a good idea, it keeps his sound fresh. Purple Rain with Maceo on sax? Fine with me!

If you don't like it by now, you're in trouble!

See the classic jazz approach by e.g. Miles D. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Or see the "Get a band that can be Yes Men and average musicians." His bands after the Musicology tour have been less and less able to really do much. Some due to limitations of the players themselves, and some due to Prince sleepwalking most of his shows from 2005 on. Somebody else said it better than me, as many of his arrangements are simply playing the same chord sequence on multiple songs without really changing the actual song that much.

IMO Prince is constantly changing bands because he likes to renew his surroundings, he needs to captivate others' vibe, to be constantly on other Tide.. As he wants to renew his own sounds, by having other acquaintances, by playing with different persons who give him new approaches, he kind of updates himself. nevertheless, he still comes back often to previous members.. We make our own way to heaven everyday

prince changing bands completely ruined his career
had he stayed with a core group of musicians, or at least revisited that line up occasionally, like the e street or crazy horse .. he might still sound like prince on stage .. instead of having only a few decent moments in a kareoke routine his whole band would sound authentic and perhaps as good as the original recordings
i don't like his re arrangements of classic songs .. i am happy to hear a 12 inch version but his jams suck and his jazz versions suck and his hip hop versions suck and his keyboard players sound nothing like his old records .. its basically prince with a bunch of hacks trying to sound like the revolution but cheaper ..
prince sees his bands as disposable which is why his career is disposable .. he needs a constant .. when u see petty and the heartbreakers or u2 or most of van halen or bruce or the stones or neil young .. there is a consistancy a fluidity an old comfortable groove that really works .. pretending that these new cats have anything close to that kind of chemistry is serious purple cool aid denial ..
it is really too bad prince lost his groove and can't find it again
ps .. the 3rd eye leaks mostly suck prince .. bambi was alright .. please prince saying "chapter whatever of the bible" is not a lyric .. its is a report .. get a clue prince stop with the crappy lyrics .. get a band that tells you when u suck so you can stop sucking soon .. how u continue to put out a worse album than the one before baffles me .. that is your true genius now .. bowie can drop a beautiful oddity at 66 and while i don't think its the best pop song ever .. it is still enjoyable and odd and intriguing and sounds real and not like it is played on a casio keyboard bought at walmart
please prince surround yourself with real musicians .. not wannabe musicians who bring nothing to the music

For the same reason us mere humans seek new company and acquaintances. Keeps it fresh. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I really don't see it as being fresh
especially when you play mostly the same run of songs over and over mixed in with covers
The thing that got me taken by Prince was his 'sound' the live shows don't have that anymore, not saying the musicians aren't any good but I don't think it really helps

a success founded on pre-1990
People know him as a good entertainer, most people don't know what new Prince music is

I am not a fan of this new lineup however I am happy to have discovered some of the baddest and most talented musicians from following Prince: Michael Bland, Sonny T, Mike Scott, John Blackwell, Cora and Josh Dunham, Maceo, Greg boyer, Morris Hayes, Rhonda, Chance, Candy, Renato, Bonnie, Shelby, Miko, Rosie etc.
I'm glad he changed band members.

My point is this......... The people who dig Prince will peep him out, the people who don't won't. I don't see a problem with that and probably neither does Prince. [Edited 1/9/13 9:15am]

I totally agree with Trevor. I don't get why he keeps changing his musicians. His backing band lately has been completely subpar. It's like he doesn't care anymore about what he's putting out and is only making new friends and letting them share the musical limelight with him, no matter how it sounds. Maybe it's possible he really doesn't care about his career anymore and is only doing what he truly wants to do.
I think the Bambi "rehearsal" sucked. His guitar playing is, of course, great. The band was terrible, and his falsetto didn't sound too good. I know you shouldn't really compare a live recording to an album track, but I did. Listening to the original recording of Bambi and that mess from the other day...it's a shame.
I know many on here will ask, "why are you even on this board then, if you don't like him?" There was a time when I was obsessed with Prince. I'm embarrassed to admit, but when I was 17, I was sure that I would marry him! His music was a part of me for a very long time. So even though I have been consistently disappointed with his musical output for years now, I just can't get him out of my system.

that's not really Prince's problem and he shouldn't care about your obsession with him. I'm not picking a fight . I admire you cuz, for once someone who refuse to leave and continue to follow him despite being dissappointed for years final admit that its an obession.

Maybe its me but what defines a "ruined career". Again I'm not impressed with his latest lineup (especially the new drummer) but Prince's career is not ruined no matter how much we don't like his output or the way the current band sounds, in view of his enormous catalog he has nothing to prove.

WOAH wats with all this hate? Prince wants new sounds and new ideas. THATS WHY WE ARE ON THIS SITE. Whether it was the early Prince, the revolution, NPG, or Modern NPG , Prince always finds a way to be unique. Prince has had success with all incarnations to a certain extend and personally im a fan of his welcome 2 america line up and they put on a show that ill never forget. And the Bambi VIDEO WAS KICK ASS. WTF are u guys talking about did we watch the same video lol?His voice sounds great and his falsetto is still intact. I guess haters are always gonna hate. the 3rdeye girl stuff was alright but then again it was "bootleg" maybe prince will never release this stuff.

thank god he does! imagine being stuck with shelby j & andy allo. i'm pleased that he switches stuff up, that's healthy & gutsy

Wat's wrong with shelby? she's got a great voice. and andy really isn't part of his band she like joins him on stage for like 2 songs lol.

I think his 'recording' career is ruined
His live performance career is doing very good
I know a lady who I found out loves Prince, but she said it as "my favorite live performer"
the Prince of the 2000's I accept his band changing, and don't have a problem with it, it sorta makes sense with his 'recording' career

new sound and new ideas? Like what?
Andy I will say seems to have sparked something for him, I still to this day have hopes for Prince to really do an successful cohesive album, that would focus him more in his live musical output. And maybe we can get a shadow of that 1980's touch /protege usage since Andy is considered one.
I'm excited about the prospect of an all woman band.
I would still like to see Prince do configurations of his band members from 1978 - now

I don't think they have a problem with her individual singing
I think it's time 4 Shelby to head her own band, she does have a big voice that needs it's spotlight
