Will this be Prince's first (nearly) all-white & all-girl band? Hannah on drums, Ida on bass, Donna on guitar.
Remember when The Rainbow Children came out, people complained about how there were only people of color on the album cover (LOL!), or in his band... well, if we end up with Prince + 3 white women, y'all will have gotten your payback
Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
(And yes I know race doesn't matter, post-racial blah blah blah... just saying... in the 80s it was a big deal that Prince assembled a multi-racial, mixed gender, and mixed sexuality band... And people felt it relevant to comment on his bands composition because they realized that Prince doesn't do anything by accident or coincidence. He's very calculating when it comes to these kinds of things.
Then by the 90s he had gone with the NPG + hip hop dancers/rappers... etc.) "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

I've always hoped 2 see him with a band of women, whatever racial mix, just as long as they can play. Altho my fantasy is sheila, lisa, wendy, rhonda, rosie, candy, cat, jill. "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

It does sound like a gimmick and hard to believe that the best players he can find are young white girls. I can't think of one young white girl great rock/funk musician. It just doesn't happen very often. I guess Wendy could be funky but was she a great guitarist at 18?
Anyway Prince is style over substance with his band members but he makes up for it himself so it's all good.

What about Donna Grantis? And what about mr Hayes? Is he still in? (doubt itbut have to check here) Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Hopefuly there's at least one person on the rosta that can give him what for.

It's sort of a cool concept (at least at this stage when he's done pretty much everything else). It would just suck to get booted out of a band simply because the band leader wants to replace you with a hot chick.

I'll only be looking at Prince, for sure! Lol.

Women deliver and are reliable to work with. Seems logical to prefer working with women.
99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I like the fact that Prince is willing to work with younger artists/players in his band.
He's been doing this long enough for me to trust that he knows what he's looking for in a bandmember, and he must be seeing and hearing something he wants each person to contribute. Maybe they help him think about his own music in a different way, bring out a different aspect that he wants to highlight this go'round.
And, it's his way of inter-generational musical dialogue/transmission; of training new players. Kind of like his own sort of school. I used to keep track on his personnel up to about ten years ago. I've honestly not had a clue who's who and who's doing what in the last few years. I guess i don't give a toss these days.

People complained? Really? I'm white and it never even crossed my mind.
As long as these gals can play, it doesn't matter to me what colour they are.

So what do we say when we have comments on the playing? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

You can say whatever you like about their musical talent. The colour of their skin shouldn't have anything to do with it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I never intended to do that. It's about the ad-libs, the tightness of whatever, and the beats. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

He has to mix it up so the white folk don't say where the white musicians, Prince must be a racist. And the black folk.. Prince is a sell out, where the brothers and sistas? Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Oh lawd, Prince IS a nearly one-man all white girl band.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes. They did. It was fucking ridiculous. And it proved that anytime Prince represented blackness of sorts, it made 'some' folks uncomfortable. Now some will spout that it was due to Princes seemingly militant meanderings but we all know that wasnt why. "Climb in my fur."
