I believe this is Prince's best video ever,

visually stimulating, and definately represents Paisley Park

Still on a Purple Rain high

I remember when this came out, we were still in the throes of Purple Rain(was the tour done yet?) Raspberry Beret got a lot of air play were I lived. The video was a real piece of art versus Prince's previous videos visually.

And it's interesting how the cartoon section of the videos barn scene is from the deleted scenes from Purple Rain where the Kid & Apollonia are on the bike and end up at a barn and have sex. It was supposed to be a very sexually explicit scene.

Only God, who makes a cameo appearance, knows when he had time to lay down the tracks.

Where Prince has taken the sweat and other bodily fluids out of his lyrics, he's also reformulated the music.

Raspberry Beret" is a sweetly wistful seduction song, -

For all I know, Around the World in a Day may represent the afterglow following the commercial orgasm of Purple Rain.

Why did you make the announcement that there'd be no singles or videos from that LP, and then start issuing singles and making videos anyway?

Because I wanted this album to be listened to, judged, critiqued as a whole. It's hard to take a trip and go around the block, and stop when the trip is 400 miles. Dig?

Best Choreography at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards award to Prince and The Revolution with their video Raspberry Beret.

A few hours later, Prince is kneeling in front of the VCR, showing his "Raspberry Beret" video.

He explains why he started the clip with a prolonged clearing of the throat.

"I just did it to be sick, to do something no one else would do."

He pauses and contemplates.

"I turned on MTV to see the premiere of 'Raspberry Beret' and Mark Goodman was talking to the guy who discovered the backward message on 'Darling Nikki.' They were trying to figure out what the cough meant too, and it was sort of funny."

He pauses again.

"But I'm not getting down on him for trying. I like that. I've always had little hidden messages, and I always will."

Yep - the US release at least had a 7:25 time listing on the label. Screwed me up when I was recording songs on my 8-track (!) to bring in the car and I had more that a minute left on track 3 when I shouldn't have

I never noticed it, and yes when i've tried to put together an ATWIAD cd with extended & Bsides ...my issue is usually with America(extended) I wish I could shorten the extended version some to fit them all on 1 disc

definately

I guess there was some kind of mild promotion, I've seen postings that looked like they were in a magazine(members posted some of theirs) but nothing extreme that I remember

This album could have been even bigger, if he promoted it more, especially because the music was such a switch, more performances and videos should have been done

I wonder did he turn down any offers of live performances at award shows that he could have featured Raspberry Beret

Back in the day, you would go into a record store and they would have a listing of all the upcoming releases. People knew it was coming out, just no lead single like normal. Radio stations around where I live just played the tracks they wanted, and of course that was Raspberry Beret anyway. The single and video came a good month after the album was released.

, then check out May 4, 1985, it's on the first page (couldn't find a direct link) - the album was released with no single, radio wasn't sure what to do with it. Eventually Raspberry Beret came out and made it to #2, Pop Life hit #7.

The album shipped platinum, so it was definitely a success. Someone needs to make a Prince timeline so we can appreciate how quickly this all happened - it was only 10 months between Purple Rain and ATWIAD, and in those 10 months he had the number 1 movie, album, a stadium tour, 5 singles, a Time album with 2 hit singles, a Sheila E album with a hit single, and an Appolonia album with a hit single (and Dance Electric), AND the Family was just on the Horizon... all in less than a year!

So, Prince was at his popular height, the only thing that kept Raspberry Beret from #1 was Simple Minds - and that song is also a classic.

Jackie Swanson

In 1985, Swanson made her professional debut in the Prince video Raspberry Beret. She and Prince were friends. He wrote a song entitled Palomino Pleasure Ride for her. In 1987, Swanson made her feature debut in the opening scene of Lethal Weapon. She played Amanda Hunsaker, who falls to her death from a building onto the hood of a car. She performed this free-fall stunt from 35 feet into an airbag under the training of stuntman Dar Robinson. Lethal Weapon would be Swanson's first time working with cinematographer Steven Goldblatt. She worked with Steven Goldblatt again on Charlie Wilson's War.

In 1989, Swanson joined the cast of Cheers in the recurring role of Kelly Gaines. Her character was a pretty, wealthy, naïve, Lutheran girl, who would eventually marry Woody Boyd, played by Woody Harrelson. She continued to appear in the show until the series ended in 1993.

Raspberry Beret" is a song by Prince and The Revolution. It was the first U.S. (and second UK) single from their 1985 album, Around the World in a Day. The sound was different from any previous Prince track, incorporating Middle Eastern finger cymbals, stringed instruments, and even a harmonica on the extended version. The song was also more in the pop vein than ever before, though the 12-inch single and video of the song feature a funky intro. Although the song was originally recorded in 1982 at Kiowa Trail Home Studio, in Spring/Summer , Prince drastically reworked it with The Revolution to give it more of an international sound. The string section was: Novi Novog on violin, Suzie Katayama and David Coleman on cello. Wendy & Lisa composed and conducted the strings on Raspberry Beret. Wendy & Lisa provided backing vocals, and the rest of the song was performed by Prince. Basic tracks for the album version were recorded in August, 1984 at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA.

Doug Henders was asked to create the cover art for Around the World in A day shortly before Christmas 1984. He was given a brief 15-point outline from Prince with some ideas of what he wanted graphically. "The process of creating the cover work and the rock trip (Purple Rain tour) itself were very gruelling," says Henders. "I think that's reflected in the melancholic rendering of the painting."

For some of the images, Henders snapped Polaroid photos of Revolution band members and people close to the band. Then he slightly altered the face or real-life features for the painting. "Most of the figures on the cover are characters in the songs, but I think some of the people Prince wanted are parts of himself, so they're all of a piece and somewhat autobiographical," Henders explains. "The little puppy in the picture was added simply because Princ got himself a dog while on the road."

The woman from "rasberry beret" also makes and appearance; holding an apple, she is like the modern-day Eve in Prince's hippie style paradise.
