Check out a cool Billboard article about the album - http://www.billboard.com/...e#/archive

, then check out May 4, 1985, it's on the first page (couldn't find a direct link) - the album was released with no single, radio wasn't sure what to do with it. Eventually Raspberry Beret came out and made it to #2, Pop Life hit #7.

The album shipped platinum, so it was definitely a success. Someone needs to make a Prince timeline so we can appreciate how quickly this all happened - it was only 10 months between Purple Rain and ATWIAD, and in those 10 months he had the number 1 movie, album, a stadium tour, 5 singles, a Time album with 2 hit singles, a Sheila E album with a hit single, and an Appolonia album with a hit single (and Dance Electric), AND the Family was just on the Horizon... all in less than a year!

So, Prince was at his popular height, the only thing that kept Raspberry Beret from #1 was Simple Minds - and that song is also a classic.

Damn - look at the Top 100 for 1985, what a great year for pop! http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._1985_(U.S.)

I agree, not to sound arrogant, but you had to be in it to really understand the purple whirlwind of events shows appearances music. We were still jamming PR era music and then some new stuff popping out of nowhere.

I wonder if those who heard Raspberry Beret on the Purple Rain tour, recognized it as the same as what was released?

This is the song that got me into Prince. I had '1999' on the periphery of my memory, but this is the song that catapulted Prince into my here and now. Without a VCR, I remember having to record the music video off the telly onto a tape recorder...and I was so addicted that I woke up early one morning (about two am) and had to play that tape to myself. For that reason alone I normally say this is my favourite Prince song. The one that started it all, and the only song I've ever woken from sleep and craved!

Why did you make the announcement that there'd be no singles or videos from that LP, and then start issuing singles and making videos anyway?

Because I wanted this album to be listened to, judged, critiqued as a whole. It's hard to take a trip and go around the block, and stop when the trip is 400 miles. Dig?

Thanks, I remember that, a lot of characters in this video huh?

Pat Smear (born Georg Ruthenberg; August 5, 1959) is a rock guitarist who has played in the Germs, Nirvana, and Foo Fighters. He appeared regularly on the MTV fashion show House of Style with Cindy Crawford.

Georg Ruthenberg was born and raised in West Los Angeles, to an African-American/Native American mother and a German immigrant father. His parents forced him to take piano lessons at a young age, and a few years later, he began teaching himself to play guitar. He lists his influences as Joan Jett, Brian James, Brian May, and Steve Jones.

Solo work (1980–1993)

Following the demise of the Germs, Smear played in 1981 with ex-Screamers keyboardist Paul Roessler and his sister Kira in a band called Twisted Roots. Although short-lived, the band was the toast of the Hollywood punk scene. Smear would go on to play with Nina Hagen and make two solo albums of his own, Ruthensmear and So You Fell in Love with a Musician...

During this time, he also appeared as an extra in the television show Quincy, M.E. and in the films Blade Runner, Breakin' and Howard the Duck. While working on Breakin', Smear became friends with Courtney Love.

We understand you directed the "America" video, and that you also directed "Raspberry Beret." How do you approach directing a video? Do you consult others in order to keep a certain perspective when directing yourself?

Yes, definitely. When directing myself, I consult Steve (Fargnoli), my manager. On directing other Paisley Park artists, I consult the artists first and foremost. One of the things I try to do with the things I direct -- namely for our acts -- is go for the different, the out-of-the-norm, the avant purple, so to speak. And the thing that's unique about the situation I'm in now with these people is that they all know who they are, and they agree with me when we say the one thing we produce is the alternative. If someone wants to go along for that ride, then cool.

(60) EXT. GLADE AND BARN -- DAWN

as they ride down a leaf-strewn path and
pull to a stop near an old, weathered,
dilapidated BARN. It stands laarge and
silent like a painting. A low THUNDER
rolls across the land...

Built like she was, she had the nerve 2 ask me
If I planned 2 do her any harm
So looka here now, I put her on the back of my bike
Where we go? (Down by) ...Old Man Johnson's farm
So looka here now, overcast days never turned me on
But somethin’ ‘bout the clouds and her mixed
She-e-e-e wasn't 2 bright, but I could tell when she kissed me
She knew how 2 get her kicks

(61) INT. BARN -- DAWN

DAWN LIGHT burns through the wooden
slats.. STEAM rises from the wet hay
scattered throughout. The air is thick
and damp. It begins to RAIN.

Vanity stands in the middle of the barn,
gazing at the storm. Beads of
perspiration glisten on her forehead.
She turns slowly, watches as Prince
retrieves old blankets from a nearby
stall. Their eyes search one another
out, their breathing becomes short,
expectant. She hesitates a moment, then
pulls off her blouse, discards it to the
moist, dusty floor.

(62) INT. BARN -- DAY

Rain sounds so cool when it hits the barn roof
And the horses wonder who U are
Thunder drowns out what the lightning sees
U feel like a movie star
They say the first time ain't the greatest
But I'll tell ya, if I had the chance 2 do it all again, oh

ANOTHER ANGLE

RAIN patters srtongly against the barn.
A deep THUNDER rolls. She's on top of
him, moving deliciously, her body
glowing in the purple, dawn light.
Moist, purple water shadows streak and
course her skin as she moves slowly,
then deliberately against him. He
watches her avidly, his hands firmly on
her thighs, and thrusts into her again
and again...and again.

Jackie Swanson

In 1985, Swanson made her professional debut in the Prince video Raspberry Beret. She and Prince were friends. He wrote a song entitled Palomino Pleasure Ride for her. In 1987, Swanson made her feature debut in the opening scene of Lethal Weapon. She played Amanda Hunsaker, who falls to her death from a building onto the hood of a car. She performed this free-fall stunt from 35 feet into an airbag under the training of stuntman Dar Robinson. Lethal Weapon would be Swanson's first time working with cinematographer Steven Goldblatt. She worked with Steven Goldblatt again on Charlie Wilson's War.

In 1989, Swanson joined the cast of Cheers in the recurring role of Kelly Gaines. Her character was a pretty, wealthy, naïve, Lutheran girl, who would eventually marry Woody Boyd, played by Woody Harrelson. She continued to appear in the show until the series ended in 1993.

Dear Jackie,

Are u well, today? I hope so.

I am in Minnesota rehearsing 4 a World tour.

I made a song about u and I sing it before every Tuesday's rehearsal.

It's a cutie little ditty entitled "Palamino Pleasure Ride"

Prince unveils new studio album
'Around the World in a Day' should be out in April

BY MICHAEL GOLDBERG

PRINCE'S SEVENTH ALBUM, Around the World in a Day, should be in record stores before the end of April. The LP, which was recorded both at Price's home studio in Minneapolis and at Hollywood studios, contains nine tracks that, according to the LP's credits, were "produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince and the Revolution."

Prince unveiled the record on Thursday, February 21st. Warner Bros. Records executives received a phone call late in the afternoon that day informing them that the label's biggest star would be arriving at their Burbank headquarters in forty-five minutes. Interoffice phones buzzed with the news, and a huge crowd of Warners staffers hurriedly assembled in the front lobby.

At about five p.m., a shiny purple limousine pulled up outside the record company's building. Prince stepped out of the car, along with his father, John L. Nelson; his bodyguards(Chick); his managers; and Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin. Dressed in a long, purple antique kimono and striped, pajama-type pants, Prince clutched a single pink rose as he entered the building. Obviously pleased and looking quite confident, Prince smiled as the crowd greeted him with tumultuous applause. "I've seen Fleetwood Mac and David Lee Roth and Shaun Cassidy and everyone walk into this building," said one Warner Bros. employee, "but nothing like this."

Prince's entourage trooped past more fans crowded along the stairways and corridors, up to a fourth-floor conference room that had been hastily decorated with hundreds of purple helium balloons and white streamers. About 150 Warners staffers and executives -- including president Lenny Waronker and board chairman Mo Ostin -- were crammed into the room. Except for a few words with Ostin, Prince was silent. He sat on the floor with Wendy and his father, stared at the ground and held on to the rose as tapes of the album played at full volume.

...while "Raspberry Beret" is another track that recalls the Beatles' psychedelic period ("She wore a Raspberry beret/The kind u find in a secondhand store/And if it was warm, she wouldn't wear much more")...

...

Until late last month, details about the album were closely guarded secrets. At Warner Bros., only a handful of top executives knew about it. Still, rumors began circulating in music-business circles, and at least one advance tape got into the hands of a rival record-company executive.

In the Warner Bros. conference room, every song was greeted with applause, and before the last cut ended, Prince vanished. Said a Warners source, "Everyone sort of stood up and applauded after the record was over, and then he wasn't there anymore."
