Funky Mix? The slower version from the Dream Factory / Crystal Ball / SOTT sessions?
It's 10 out of 10 for me. | |

Since the poster did not clarify, I will say the 1986 version of We Can Funk kills the official one from 1990. Not sure why he called it the "funky mix." It is like he had some inside information of what that mix was labled at Paisley Park or whatever. Both versions are funky, but the original just sounds so naturally funky, while the released version is great, it does sound overproduced overpolished and just a tad bit forced. Just like Data Bank was better the first time around.
Had Prince released a Triple album in 1987, I would've loved one side to be just like this:

I did clarify... '86 = 1986

I agree, Prince could have released about 5 (at least) different albums each with a specific feel
that list you put it was very raw and organic, mostly full band recordings, Ball (later Eye No) fell into this catagory as well

Love, love, love the '86 version! Did I say I love it? "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Glad you like the list. I've got a huge word file where I have re-configed Prince's entire career with no albums in 85-86, with releases coming out every 3 years, and HUGE outtake sets coming out every 10 or so years. Some fans have told me they hate my idea since they liked the market saturation, but with my idea, we actually get about 150 or so more songs from 1984 to 2011 than we actually got, except that the way they were released were different. My other idea would have been to have album tracks for B-Sides, so the obsessed fan didn't have to chase down singles and soundtracks, imports, etc. Much cheaper than buying bootlegs for high prices in the 90's!

i guess im the only one that prefers the 1990 version. i think that one is funkier. i like GC's voice on it. I just hate that tom snare on the 86 version.

Yeah, most everyone should have been able to get that. However, you used the word "mix" to refer to it, even if they are just different recordings altogether.
There exists several different mixes that circulate as bootlegs of the "Dream Factory" and the "Graffiti Bridge" versions. Meaning, they have the different instruments playing at slightly different volume levels, the amount of reverb varies and so on. As far as I know, there are at least two different mixes ("downmixes") of the version from the mid-80s that have circulated as bootlegs (although it's possible that some of the differences were actually caused by the bootleggers trying to "remaster" the sources).

Now I have a lot of boots (well a couple) so which would it be? Yes I know you said 86. 30 Years of Unreleased...? iVault? Box of Chocs? Whichever, they all have sound issues. Mine sound like they were recorded from a club several doors away.
