This guy is 27, and has not Ten, not Nine, but, uh...TWO ALBUMS!!!! Mars is not even a true songwriter, he has to have a team of professional songwriters helping him. He did make the Police song that Sting no longer has the guts to with Locked out of Heaven, but Mark Ronson really wrote most of it.

Mars is an ok talent with a somewhat bright future, but at 27, he's already getting old enough to where in a few years, the industry will spit him out. The stupid industry spits people out younger and younger, and Mars is certainly no Prince.

At 27, Prince had 7 albums. He also had written and recorded at least 500 songs. Just to look at the length of these albums, Prince's 1999 is actually longer than Bluto's two albums COMBINED.

Pardon me. I had no idea English wasn't his/her native language. The mistakes I pointed out are the same things I see from native English speakers daily online and at my job, (a damned university, no less). Then in place of Than, Of in place of should'VE, etc. I was quite sure it was a 20-something's poor attempt at his/her mother tongue.

For a native speaker of Serbian, you are quite right in asserting that it was a good post.

I've listened to Chromeo a whole lot and I've had to conclude they don't sound like Prince at all. There are a few synth lines here and there tha remind of early-80s Prince, but the songwriting and the arrangements are in different style. They have a closer resemblance to some Rick James stuff (the "Glow" album in particular).

When you listen to Prince and compare him to the guys doing "electro-funk" these days you should realize how sparse his arrangements are. He doesn't rely on multiple layers of synths to make his compositions work. He's also using his voice for doing parts that many would do on synths.

I don't think there are any artists doing Prince better than Prince. I've enjoyed many of those "homage" tracks (e.g. The-Dream - "Yamaha", ), but I always get the feeling that they just don't really cut it in the end. They're just too full of elements and those guys don't have the great understanding of space that Prince has always had.

Most of Prince's 80s style tracks from the 00s seem to be more inspired by SOTT era material than 1999 to my ears. The SOTT era was not very heavy on synths. Some of the more recent tracks have had a Controversy -style new wave-ish beat underneath, but he has not really tried to make "Private Joy" or "Automatic" type of stuff.

The artists you have mentioned do use 80s style sounds, but they aren't "doing Prince better than Prince". Far too many times some contemporary track that uses sounds from that era gets compared to Prince when those tracks really sound closer to something like Midnight Star or Hall & Oates.

Prince's music isn't really about a specific set of sounds. It's always been more about his songwriting and his highly original approach to making different elements work together. He's always been an artist with his own vision as opposed to just someone that has used the hot sounds of some specific era.

He's somewhere else now but Mt. Sims' first album borrowed a lot to Prince, and then many other artists from the electroclash explosion borrowed here and there: Felix Da Housecat, Avenue D., Peaches, Dirty Sanchez, etc.

There's one track on Parallel Dance Ensemble's album which has a very Prince-sounding like linn beat.

What a massive dickhead

As time wears on, I think this phrasing does Prince AND the other artist/group a disservice.

No artist can quite sound like Prince.

And Prince for all his prowess and versatility can't do what a Van Hunt does, or a Frank Ocean does, or Kwick, or Shuggie, or whomever.

Many of the artists named may owe or cite Prince as an influence but they make good work in their own rights.

I think Jesse Johnson and Andre Cymone can perform like Prince, because they were there laying the foundation for the MPLS Sound.

Some, like Bilal, Badu, Dam-Funk, Blacc, are more or less doing their own things.

Others, like TVOTR, are simply in another dimension.

Jack White? can you give an example?
