^^^ falloff Oh my, I really tried to read this, I really did. But in all seriousness, what on earth was that all about? I understood parts of it but the rest either went right over my head or it was just a big pile of steaming horse manure? I haven't a clue what the writer was on about apart from meeting Prince backstage. What happened after that? That there is some weird stuff. confuse

pueroda

For me, this was a boring read. It's a very wordy, uninteresting article.

Mainly, he (author) is/was strongly attracted to Prince, he met him briefly when he interviewed him at a Musicology concert (reveals nothing interesting from the interview), eventually, he secretly found his Prince (in his mind is much like Prince-the artist) who fell in love with a woman he introduced him to (weird), and sadly she ended up dying....

The author writes about other stuff, but it's just that...uninteresting/unengaging (to me anyway) stuff. On the other hand, I guess he just wanted to pay homage to Prince and express how he (Prince) has influenced/affected his life. Although, I think it's possible that he's in a dark place because of the way he ended the article (death) and hasn't had that one real (intimate) relationship with his (the) true Prince....???

I really didn't get very much else from the article....except he made a peach pie and took it to the "Lovesexy Concert" in which his date refused to eat...funny!

Yea seriously. That's one of the dumbest fucking things I've ever wasted time reading. Prince related or no.

i gave up as soon as i realised the entire first page was just him describing a joke

Sorry, but this reads like fanfiction rather than a magazine article... not really my cup of tea,

Thank you though for the links and upload.

In this months Aussie Harper's Bazaar mag, there is a list of things you didn't know about Prince from Matt Thorne's book.

It is in Harper's! Of course it is so-called weird stuff! Look at the other articles. I do not worry if I do not understand every part. It is not about Prince; it is about Hilton Als. Clearly the folks on the fan site do not love it. He is a fan in his own way but his writing is not going to earn friends here. I liked it, in parts. And no, I do not get it all and that doesn't detract.

Agreed this was real hard work, maybe I just don't recognise high art.

You can save having to read the first page by watching.

The fact that huge swaths of this mess are unintelligible "doesn't detract"? Seriously?

I should have stayed in journalism. If this is the kind of writing people are paying for these days, I could've won a fucking Pulitzer. disbelief

You are all weird. I think this piece is a fantastic memoir, and it's just what it is, a memoir. If you can write a better one, why don't you try to write a memoir in a similar fashion and publish it on the org?

Now, that would be a laugh. If you don't understand what the author is writing, it does not mean the writing is bad, it means you don't get it.

Thanks for the scan, I loved that piece.

I am glad I am not the only one. Well, I do not mind being the only one but....I liked the piece too.

I have subscribed to Harper's for years and never dreamt I would see Prince get top billing.

I now have several copies of that issue because all my writer friends have sent it to me, as in, hey here is that crazy guy that YOU like. They sniff at my Prince fanaticism.

I actually saved this article now, cause I found the article very daring, inspring, creative and honest, and on an on. Furhermore, I am gonna check some more writings by Hilton. I am gonna make a presumption now, but many many gay black man over 50 will understand what Hilton is talking about Prince. He is just describing what every other gay black man at Prince age group felt.

Many people on the org don't fit into that catagory, so it's understandable they don't understand what Hilton is talking about. However to label somebody's creative "memoir" as a piece of bullshit writing is laughable. I don't know what drugs people are on when they critise. lol

No, it is not sorry. Your professional opinion is only valid for you, unless you prove that you have the same biography as Hilton has. OR you have published your own Memoir on Prince with your OWN writing that we can compare.

Sorry Genesis I am not having a go at you, but many critism was just uncalled for.

For all the other that don't get it: This is black gay man writing on his own memoir about Prince, same age group as Prince and anything that used to be color & gay when way back then in his OWN Memoir.

He usually writes theater reviews in the NYer. I am guessing they passed on this one and Harper's took it. Harper's likes the ledge or edge more. I liked Hilton's perspective, the date, the pie, the description of JF as the opening.

Plus, you know it has SOMETHING if people react with such fury.
