Covers of Prince songs that you PREFER over the original?

Somebody in that WYWM thread mentioned that they prefered the Cyndi Lauper cover to the Prince version, and this got to thinking.

Of course when I mean "Prince songs," this can also include tracks he recorded for his associate singers/groups. In case somebody needed clarification. lol

I really enjoyed Dump's cover of Pop Life. I don't know if I like it as much as the original but it was a really great cover. That whole cover album they did was amazing actually. Their cover of the beautiful ones was another song I really liked, but again I don't think I liked it as much as the original so I guess nothing comes to mind at the moment razz

I agree with Chaka's cover of I Feel For You, but the one I think is going to get me :fishslapped: is Nothing Compare 2 U by Sinead O'Conner. Actually, I don't necessarily prefer her version over Prince's; I like them both the same, for different reasons.

Sorry I don't listen to any Prince cover songs, cause the original Prince version is usally the best and in concert he even out does himself. So for those reasons I stick with the man

I have never liked Prince and Rosie's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U". For me, it's honestly a tie between The Family's version and Sinead's.

Cyndi's "When U Were Mine" is the only Prince remake I have ever preferred over the original. And I hate to admit it, but I was pleasantly surprised by that cat from New Kids on the Block's version of "I Could Never...". Obviously nowhere near Prince's version, but I was I actually liked it. boxed

Couldn't agree more. The version on the Hits fell so flat IMO. Though somewhere there exists Prince's guide vocals for St. Paul, and that's sure to be a treat if it ever surfaces

Agree with all of these. The parts that Stevie added with the harmonica is better than on the Prince album. Love Sinead's version of NC2U. There's more passion and heart in how she sings this. Personally feel with the lyrics that this is a woman's song than a man's.

Maniac Monday is kind of unfair as we never got an official release from Prince in any form and essentially the Bangles version is just different vocals than the unreleased Apollonia one circulating.

Want to include TLC's cover of 'Get It Up'. While the Time's has the awesome Prince guitar solo, the hip-hop tinge that Dallas Austin added to the song made this fave of mine.

That's what it is for me too. I don't feel any emotion from it. I do like his version on the One Nite Alone box set.

right, I agree w. you, Kewlschool. biggrin

NC2U: The Prince / Rosie duet is without passion. It is really weak, I would love to hear a Prince "studio version" with Prince doing what Sinead O'Connor did, to sing the song with full emotion in the vocals. That would be the greatest version, who knows if such a version exists....? The version by The Family sounds false to me, those strings sounds "out of tune", they don't fit the song.. imo.

When U Were Mine: Prince's original is untouchable..... the orig. version is the best and can't be reached, noone can make that song even better than Prince imho. I don't like the Cyndi Lauper version even it's a fantastic album ("She's so unusual", her breakthrough).

the Dirty Mind album is excellent, one of my all time fave Prince albums, and WUWM is one of the best songs on the album.

I actually liked Holly Cole's verison of Purple Rain. The arrangement was more stripped down and I liked to hear the song from a female perspective.

On the flip side:

Prince´s version of Nothing Compares 2 U with Rosie (on the Hits album) sucks and Sinead´s version sounds better but....Prince´s rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U that he did in Buenos Aires at the River Plate Stadium in Argentina is much, much better than Sinead´s version.

Chaka´s version of I Feel For U sounds a bit more energetic than Prince´s...then again, it came out much later than Prince´s version, and the sound was of course much more up to date, they had time to update the sound a bit.

When U Were Mine is a Prince classic, and in my opinion nobody but Prince can outdo Prince with this song....only Prince himself. His rendition at First Ave. in August 1983 is by far my favorite version of that song, albeit a tad too short.

So, in a nutshell, in my opinion I Feel For U is the only Prince song that has indeed benefitted from being covered. This doesn´t mean that there are great Prince covers out there....it´s just that they are, in my opinion, not better than the original.
