I actually liked Holly Cole's verison of Purple Rain. The arrangement was more stripped down and I liked to hear the song from a female perspective.

Yeah, but do you like it better than Princes version?

On the flip side:

I absolutely hate Prince's version of 'case of you' - it does nothing for me.

Even the one he did at the 1983 benefit?

really prefer Joe Cocker's Five Women over Prince's version, think his voice suits the tone of the song better - plus I think of P's as more of a cover since it came out years later

same for Nothing Compares 2 U - don't like the Hits version but love the Family and Sinead's versions - the Hits version sounds forced to me - maybe the 'live' sound to it

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

There's this unreleased Prince 80s original that's never been heard, but anyway, Sinead's interpretation is MUCH better than the released version by Prince in the 90s.

Chaka Khan - I Feel For You

Prince's version is really good, but Chaka kicked ass with her version, making it one of the very best recordings of her glorious carreer.

Now, Bangle's Manic Monday, I don't know Prince's version, but I honestly HATE this song. It's 80s cliche, its mediocre, its insipid.

Don't know much Prince covered songs to answer this, like the Beautiful Ones, Take Me With U and Pop Life covers mentioned, dont know these. There's of course Mariah and Beyoncé`s Glastonbury Beautiful Ones covers. Mariah's is unexpressive, but I think Beyoncé did a pretty good live version of this song (not a very easy song to sing, must be said).

I really enjoyed Dump's cover of Pop Life. I don't know if I like it as much as the original but it was a really great cover. That whole cover album they did was amazing actually. Their cover of the beautiful ones was another song I really liked, but again I don't think I liked it as much as the original so I guess nothing comes to mind at the moment razz

I found these on youtube. Sorry, buddy, but did you really enjoy these covers? It's the most amateur home-made LIFELESS thing I ever heard. You must be a really condescending guy. If I sat by the guitar right now and sung these songs, I'd put much more emotion than these covers, so that you'd be a fan of mine and mention me here also! LOL

Fol Chen - The beautiful ones. That's a cover I really love even though the original is in my top 3. of course the original is the best, but even though.

Didnt know this. nowhere near the original, of course, but i think its really interesting for its creative arrangement. It's electronic-playful, reminded of Hot Chip.

Are you familiar with Prince´s live version of Nothing Compares 2 U during the Nude tour?

Yes. I agree with you. For me, no tie between Sinead and The Family. The Family's version is, besides false as you said, FORCED, and does nothing for me.

NC2U: The version by The Family sounds false to me, those strings sounds "out of tune", they don't fit the song.. imo.

Kiss bij Art of Noise / Tom Jones

You prefer Tom Jone's Kiss over Prince's??

eek eek eek eek eek eek

When played live, Tom jones has a far better voice. Studio tracks i call it even. I like the music the art of noise put under the track.

Chaka Khan's cover of I Feel For You hands-down. I've heard the Pointer Sisters & Rebbie Jackson's covers of I Feel For You; they're just bland carbon-copies of Prince's lovely original recording.

Chaka's version is imaginative, left-of-center, blending r&b, dance music & hip-hop. Ahead of its time. It kicks butt. cool

You do realize Manic Monday is essentially the same song as 1999 right?

You can sing the words of 1999 to it-just saying.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Thank you, I didnt know that. I've listened to it again. Really the verses are melodically the same, but the chorus is different and so is the arrangement, instruments. Still doesn't make the two songs essentially the same for me. I love 1999, but Manic Monday is just hmph! for me.
