Prince not a tight band leader anymore?

Prince was known for cutting paychecks when his band members miss a note or play a bad one.that was one of the main reasons his bands were always tight. But in the last few years his band is starting to sound a bit unpolished even amateurish in sound .a downhill started with the Dunhams,Josh and Cora didn't have much of a presence but they were tight in the pocket. With time Shelby started to become a much more prominent band member and the shows started looking like a Shelby J and the Npg with Prince as a guest.i mean would Prince of old allow his vocals to be much lower in the mix then Shelby's? even worse he added a non existing rhythm guitar player Andy Allo who also supplied an off key vocals. And the new Bambi rehearsal while really good overall is ruined with that offkey moment by the girl guitarist.that kind of things can happen to a garage band but not to a famous mega star know for being one of the greatest live performers ever.I hate that i start to sound like a hater but i had to say this. There are amazing players who would play 4 free with Prince

I think Prince lets Shelby have the stage to save his vocals. Yeah it can be annoying especially when his show starts to gain momentum & then you have to sit through "Raise yo hands up" by Shelby J but its not as bad when every band member has to take a turn with a seamingly never ending solo. I actually enjoyed Brown Skin with P tearing it up on guitar.

Cora gets no love here, and she's one of Prince's most solid drummers... powerful too.

THAT was Cora on drums on "Dreamer", please remember.

I'm not feeling this new drummer though. Her snare is far too lightweight for my taste, and she's not particularly tight, nor powerful.

Idk what ur talking bout cause i saw Prince his two last concerts that took place in Chicago and u wouldn't have known who shelby is if he didn't point her out. Especially on the 9/25 concert. Prince's band is extremely tight still. This might not be the greatest band of his career but boy do they get the job done. John Blackwell is amazing, the woman bass player is great, and the rest of his horn section is great but a bit under used. Besides andy allo said that Prince docks for mistakes.

He does not. Last time I saw him live few months ago, the band was tight as hell.

You base mainly your judgment on the Bambi rehearsal. It is a REHEARSAL.

Meh, it's probably just a case of you getting older and noticing more of that stuff. When I listen back to old stuff, I hear just as many little mistakes - many that I didn't even notice the first time around. They're inevitable no matter how much you practice!! But what, we're going to criticise about mistakes in rehearsals now? Righteo neutral

Rdhull during my early days on org i made 3 topics per week raving about Prince's guitar playing.Too me since my childhood Prince was always perfect.I thought he was an Alien. Now i know he is a human smile I don't want to appear as a rude ,offensive and anything like that ,i just wanna explore even a negative aspects of Prince. And i like u 2 man .Peace

nothing wrong with exploring all aspects of him as a musician

i just don't see any evidence that he's not a "tight band leader any more"

I like Bambi ,this version is very nice but i got to admit that girl guitarist makes it a bit less perfect .without her misses this rendation of Bambi would be there with some of the best.the reason i think Prince is not tight anymore is because a)le's non musicians "play" b)back vocalists are louder in the mix then Prince c)let's every first show of the tour suffer because of the bad sound issues .those are the reason i made this topic and i think Prince can fix all this only if he tries just a bit more. On the other side i love all the new stuff and i like Bambi also.
