marketing idea Prince should drop his new album the same day that Bowie does. Call it coast marketing.

Is this kind of marketing the same used by those shops that combine key cutting with shoe repairs? blah blah blah

^ LOL
Don't think it's a good idea as you'd get all the haters making the inevitable negative comparisons!

Prince cannot hope to match the excitement the Bowie release is going to generate. If he's smart, he won't even try to go toe-to-toe with that. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

LOL. First of alll how will he go toe to toe with bowie. it's like saying cher and 50 cent are going toe to toe. Prince and bowie completely different. the only reason bowie gonna get more attention cause he hasn't done shit in 10 years.

if he's planning on opening up the vault, a good idea would be to include a cd of about 8 amazingly good vault tracks from his prime period with a huge US magazine and in europe perhaps with some good music magazines etc.
the article to go along with the disc could first up give some history on the songs with cool anecdotes, a few 'outtake' pictures from the period etc.
then they could discuss some more of the cool outtakes yet to be released, by prince, on his own website, or on itunes, with the option of a physical copy through prince.
at the same time as the magazine release, the internetadress should already be up, preferably a day before the magazines hit the stands/kiosks.
that way, people's interest would be sparked, they'd be listening to a disc full of cuts that were on par with purple rain and sign of the times material, check out the site, find yet another song there, ready for download (for free) if they sign up.
after that, email announces once a week that there is a new track, or new tracks or a complete live show or vid for sale. no weird shit, just click, download, play.
but that might actually work
i'm sure prince has something much more labyrinthine and alienating in mind for his promo campagne

that's no comparison. i'm sure that bowie is one of only a handful of people that could get prince a little starstruck and insecure.
because he's that good. prince would be the first to admit that.
