Prince and Andre Cymone Reunite for "Dance Electric"
The Org must be drying up, because I see no mention of Prince and Andre Cymone reuniting to jam on "Dance Electric" during Prince's Sayer's Club gig.
"At the end of his set, Prince’s former bassist Andre Cymone (pre-Revolution era) came on stage looking super-fly in shades and white creepers to perform ”The Dance Electric,” a song written by Prince but originally recorded by Cymone."

It's in the Concerts forum. Great that they performed together and he's giving him some exposure to coincide with Andre's new album.

Why? Is there a decent recording floating around? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

when prince speaks he still refers 2 andre as his best friend not in past tense. i think because people move on or have a little flair up they r quick 2 assume they hate prince. prince and andre been in each other life since they were in middle school that friendship will prolly last til death

suspect that once P reads the bad mouthing article AC did[see associated artists section] the goodwill may disappear. AC wrote Controversy!!DAYUM , never knew that. Bit of a cheap shot on AC 's part perhaps but at least he's honest [ i assume so anyway?]

What he said in that interview wasn't anything that wasn't said before or anything that Prince had never heard of when it comes to Andre's sentiments and how he had changed. The truth is the truth.
In the facebook tweet he still referred to Prince as a friend and said that Dance Electric that night was what he wanted it to be.

connection cant always be judged by time how comfortable Prince can be with a woman might equalize the time compared to a man
Hes known wendy for more than 5 or 6 years lol
he and Andre parted ways when Prince was 22/23 he met Wendy when Lisa joined the band Andres last year with the band 1980
Wendy started working with Prince 1981/82 doing some 1999 songs Free & Irresistable Bitch
Prince was in communication with Wendy & Lisa 3-5 yrs after they left the band and near the 1999 yr after rel In This Bed I Scream he started reaching out to them more 2003 he starts doing performances more with Lisa Wendy even having Susannah on stage a few times
he also started reach out to Morris/Jerome & Sheila E more this time period
He also called Bobby Z best friends when he let him go from the band and he and Bobby Z also stayed in connection,
Hes had an up and down relationship with all in his time. Even Andre, they werent steady friends all that time

yeah I never heard that AC wrote Controversy

Awesome!!!!! In case the concert forum thread languishes ... Did anybody here see that part of the show? How was it? Did they mesh well? Was Andre's mic turned down in the mix so you couldn't hear him? Was it great? Was it bad? "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Andre never said he wrote Controversy. He said Prince wrote Contorversy around a jam Andre was working on with the Rebels/Revolution. That's a big difference. Though Andre and the band felt Prince should give Andre credit, Prince felt he had done enough that the final product was his creation alone, so Andre moved on. I can see Prince's point in denying Andre credit. And I see Andre's point in feeling like he was going to have to get his own thing going then.

If they all felt that it was Andre's song expect Prince then maybe he deserved at the very least a co written credit .. this is kinda disapointing since "controversy" is one of my favorite songs.

Why are you disappointed? It's not a favorite song anymore?
I completely agree with funksterr, especially the bolded. Hasn't anyone watched numerous episodes of "Behind the Music"? Every band has an issue with who "wrote" what, and ends up hating each other for it. Unless the band preemptively dealt with the issue by giving standardized credit across the board ("Lennon/McCartney" 50-50 or Duran equal shares all 5). If you want to avoid that, go solo. That's what Andre did, and Prince too to a large extent by disbanding his collaborative bands that did not see him as the boss but the lead singer/guitarist. Perhaps that helped preserve their friendship in the long run. In the Tavis Smiley interview, he still referred to Andre as his best friend. And in the radio interview posted over in Associated Artists forum, he seemed grateful for the exposure that Prince has been giving "Dance Electric" beginning in Chicago, giving him a "shout out" he said.
Anyway, it's all speculation. Who knows the truth of their relationship? "Controversy" is still a great song.

"Controversy" was always one of my fav jams.
I'm wondering what form was Andre playing the riff... I'm guessing he was playing the main riff on Bass or possibly synth, but I'd bet he was doing it on Bass.
Prince simply heard the riff, liked it, and then wrote everything else around it, turning it into the jam we know and love.

But I thought the song in question was Do Me Baby, I never heard this about Controversy
That's something Lisa said Prince did all the time, sometimes even moreso
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
There were a number of instances when The Rebels felt Prince incorporated their ideas without credit into his final compositions. In an interview setting, the stories are typically offered in a condensed version, so that's why we sometimes hear about different track names, but to be clear Andre has specificaly said over the years that he didn't feel Prince stole from or plagiarised him. He just felt he had no path to his own success if he stayed in the backing band.
