R&R Love Affair getting mainstream radio love

Nice to see mainscream radio showing the love for Prince's "R&R Love Affair" single.

Usually it's shows like ours and several others that only play Prince's new jams. However, we were driving in our car today and spun the dial to hear the announcer say, "Here is Prince's latest single: Rock and Roll Love Affair". Sounded like a breath of fresh air aside the Carly Jepsen's of the world.

I'm starting to dig it more. It's Prince doing his Bob Dylan vibe with MPLS twist.

It's always been this way y'all...some Prince chunes need to grow on ya...it's positive-vibed song with beautiful horn arrangements

"2 people in love in love, with nothing but the road ahead..."

biggrin

Well said - I said it sounded a bit like Bob Dylan when it first came out. Its a grower

However, have not heard anything on my local radio...what other cities are getting moderate airplay?

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

er

I'm a BIG Dylan fan and I don't think it sounds very Dylanesque at all. More like Tom Petty.(Who played with both Bob and Prince, so there is a link.) Besides, I don't think Dylan would ever write such a feelgood love song without putting some dark spin on it. Which is why I love him so much. His new album Tempest is full of that.

I dont listen to mainstream radio so I wouldnt know. But good to hear this track is getting traction. This track is by FAR his most pop radio freindly track in ages.

As I have stated on other threads, I like it and hope this is a new direction he is taking. Prince is too great of an artist to have been stuck on the cheesy bubble gum music rut for the last 20 or so years. There comes a time to say enough. People were not buying it and didnt care if it was given away for free inside newspapers.

Anyway, hope the track continues to get airplay.

I guess this might matter to whoever still listens to radio. Honestly, I don’t know anyone who does, aside from a few nerds with an NPR fetish.

It's ironic THIS song is seemingly making waves on radio.

He's had better music out this last ten years, far better.

It's funny. I've really gone off Prince lately since the Aussie tour (overdosed), but I quite like this song. It's just nice and cruisey. I think I have hit that age where 'adult contemporary' is an appealing genre lol

Wow. That's pretty exciting. If only American radio could be so openminded.

According to Rajar, the body that measures the UK radio industr, 89% of the UK (over 50 million people here by the way) listen to radio in one format or the other. Approximately each person in the UK listens to 11 hours of BBC radio each week. Those are quite large figures. From a personal perspective I can't think of anywhere I've ever worked that doesn't have the radio on all day. I've served in the RAF, worked in factories/shops/kitchens and am now a brewer for Heineken. I've always heard the radio.

You are a musician. You have a wider appreciation of music than the usual org fan.

listening to prince should open people's horizons. Jazz, funk, rock, pop, and all kinds of weird stuff in between including adult contemporary. But strangely some fans here are myopic and for some strange reason demand and expect Prince to stay limited to their own narrow spectrum of interest.

I like the track too. But I can go from listening Phillip Glass to Dave Brubeck to Johnny Cash to Marvin Gaye to Gotye to Gangnam Style no problem. smile

20Ten songs are very radio friendly

I like the lyrics to the songs, it feels very close to Guitar (this style is easy Prince)

I would love a more electic guitar filled version

I mostly hear music on the radio by Prince from the 1999-Parade (sometimes SOTT) period

A guy at work came into the office wistling the Glamorous Life just now

@Oldfriends4sale
I have a lot respect for your opinion, but no. :)

I respectfully disagree. Nothing on 20ten was in no way shape or form radio friendly in my opinion. Radio friendly "banal" and "pedestrian" share a lot of commonalities, but are very distinct entities. 20ten was just mostly terrible. Not MPLSound terrible. But but pretty bad non the less.

I guess you blacked out in 2004 when he was all over RnB stations.

Why won't do you face the fact that it is hard to get music on the radio when you are not on a major record label. I think he cut some kind of deal with Clear Channel to get this song on the air. and doubt anyone else but Prince could this off.

Oh, come on! The USA and a whole lot of other countries have also shitloads of crap music high in the charts.

Prince's new song is high on the radio charts because they hired a marketing company to push promotion. So there was money spent for getting airplay. That explains why this song is becoming a "hit", while so much better prince music from the past 15 years was ignored by the mainstream media. It has nothing to do with quality at all.

This explains the situation perfectly:
