I believe in his contract with WB after a certain amount of years (I think the number is around 31) he gets the masters. So now from his WB catalog I think he owns all his masters up to Dirty Mind or Controversy

Everything released outside of Warner Bros after 1996, as well as early NPG Recors releases (Gold Nigga, Exodus, 1-800 New Funk, Child Of The Sun and related singles).

Everything released on Paisley Park Records between 1985 and 1993, except for Pandemonium, Romance 1600, Sheila E., most likely the 2 Kahori Kohiruimaki albums and possibly a very few others.

Everything that's unreleased, both studio and live.

And according to Prince, his WB material started to revert to him after 30 years but it sounds odd and unlikely, the law saying 35 years and necessiting a case-by-case court decision.

Why has there never been any official confirmation of this?

That would have been sort of, kind of like a BIG HUGE %$^&^DEAL no?

And why aren't there any remasters already?

No, it is not according to Prince but according to the peach and black podcast and ONLY according to them that Prince said this.

So it is just allegedly, according to only 1 person, who is also a fan, and with all due respect not by any official news outlet.

Moreover, it is very well possible that there was a misunderstanding here, because this is a complicated legal matter. Prince could have referred to him already filing for the rights to return (which is a requirement) and thus suggesting that he practially already owned them.

I am still not excluding that a deal has already been made, but it really seems very unlikely to me.

THIS ISN'T JUST ABOUT PRINCE.

it's about All US COPYRIGHTED WORKS created in or after 1978.

Starting in 2013 every year there will be lawsuits flying all over the place.

Can we please put the 30 years rumor to rest with that?

To make this more clear.

Mostly because of their volatile past and Prince's controlling character, I think chances are not high that they have a deal in place here.

BUT, in all fairness, it COULD be true. I can imagine for example WB not wanting to go to war/court over this with Prince and opting for a settlement, under the condition that Prince keeps total silence on it, at least untill 2013...

But that would mean that P would have violated this agreement when he talked to P&B....

And I just can see what else WB would have to gain with such a deal...

Nor why Prince would agree to FINALLY "owning his masters" but STILL not being able to do anything with them...

It just all sounds very... unlikely to me, but we will never really know untill some definitive confirmation comes out, from all involved.

These so called valuable masters are losing value by the day. As each year goes by, there will be more Prince fans dying off of old age, or just no longer having interest in spending money, than the amount of new Prince fans who actually care to spend money on remastered packages. It would take something extraordinary, like BILLIONS of bonus tracks, Multi-CD Sets at a VERY LOW price, with each disc filled up to 75-80 minutes per disc to even get a few sales.

The die hards here will pay for anything that gets released. The mainstream fan might go for Purple Rain and 1999. Not much else would really sell. Sad, but true.

So that's why practically every other artist has remasters and box sets, including many who sell much less than Prince on average.

God, don't bury us just yet!

Artists sell after death. There's no reason Prince will be any different and it won't just be limited to one or two albums, although of course the big hitters will be the biggest sellers.
