i thought it was pretty nice. i liked his vocal adlibs toward the end a lot, and i liked seeing him play a new song and be excited by it. i still think it's the absolute wrong choice for a single tho. this one isn't going to generate much interest in any new project, imo.

and i'm going to say this with love because i care:

Prince, please stop wearing lip balm that has shimmer. It looks super creepy against your pencil moustache. A matte finish would look much better. That is all.

i thought gay guys liked glitters and shimmers? oh well it's always something.

This gay guy just wants Princey to look his best. biggrin

I also noticed it, and agree with you. I also notice the nail polish, that is also shinier than usual. His manicure is totally on point. The only thing I can't stand is nail polish on men's. I am okay with his other beautifying methods.

That's funny because I think that's what making the songs sounds uber corny. Too many hornz and not enough synth. It comes across as a Vegas cover band. I will say the boy ripped it on the guitar at the end. Ugh i wish those horns weren't there.....

I doubt it. I reckon that could be the antidote hough. We all need a bit of head, til we burnin up.

Gohi said:

Prince's vocals really hurt the performance. Also LOL at Andy and her unplugged, inaudible acoustic.

Be grateful for small mercies. Unplugged and inaudible is some of her best work. His voice sounded rough on both tunes to me, lucky he can play a guitar.

kenkamken said:

The guests beforehand talked some great Prince stories. The band looked and sounded awesome. Andy is a good fashion influence on him, and he seems to be opening up musically again. I look forward to the fruits of their future collaborations.

Hello, how are youuu. I'm fine, cos I know that the doc, is coming, sooooooooon. Coming, coming, sooooooooooon.

HonestMan13 said:

People are really stretching here to find something not to like. Prince finally did something conventional with this song(released it to radio, promoted it on tv, releasing it as a single & all in a reasonable timeframe) which may or may not lead up to a new CD. So of course as usual let's get on him for his clothes and his hair.

No stretching needed. From a completely static position I listened to the 'performance' and as much as I wanted to, I couldn't deny that it was total crap. Especially when you consider what he's capable of. I couldn't give a monkeys about what he's wearing. It's nothing new is it. Think Dirty Mind knickers singing "Head".

Emancipation89 said:

...I don't get the complains about his vocals. RnR affair is not even the type of song that requires "singing". 90% of the song is spoken words and he kept the energy level pretty consistent throughout the performance - if anything he actually sounded more vibrant towards the end.

Fair enough, R&Rse might not really need 'singing'. I spose Dance Electric similarly doesn't really need singing but both sounded poor to me. Did you hear the 'band' though? What's their excuse? They sounded about as together as Obama and Mitt or chalk and cheese.

skywalker said:

Some of the WAAAAAY negative OVER reactions to this performance make me grin.

How am I doing? biggrin

I was clubbing for most of the 90s. I only bought a few of his 'albums' during that time and that was only because I wanted to keep the official collection more or less up to date. I hardly liked any of it. If I was his producer I'd have struggled to put out a decent triple album from the whole decade. This is what you might call an annus horribilis for P. Again.

Just sayin lol.

larksanders said:

Man, I really miss Prince. I know people change, move on or whatever, but where is the bite? Where is the grit? Where is the funk? As much as I want to like that song (and believe me I do), it just sounds so damn corny and so Vegas. Please lose the horn section. This guy used to pave his own way and now he seems to be completely lost. I think back to when he said "you may have lost me, but I found myself", I think it's the other way around man. I mean I'm still sticking by you, but I have to say I am hoping you have a big surprise for me than this light rock shit you have been pumping lately.

#endrant....

Bang on. Not sure he needs to lose the horns though. I've been waiting for a suprise for years so don't hold ya breath waiting eh.

The ride. Now there's a tune. Probably everyone here gets a kick out of seeing him live. That's not the same as watching or hearing a poor live performance of a piss poor song.

Why don't y'all just make funeral arrangements for Prince's career. I swear for a lot of y'all, it would have been better if he just stayed out of the public eye all year long instead of the summer.

By the sound of it, yeah. I wouldn't mind if he hid away for a bit. Maybe he'd be inspired to write something decent again. I reckon he's still got it in him somewhere, hidden behind the botox maybe? "Stars collide"? Wouldn't you need two 'stars' for them to collide? "It's tight but I can fit you in"?

Come on, it's ridiculous.

Some Great Points, but Prince better live now than EVER??? Really??? So, if you went to a show and Shelby shouts "Put Your Hands Up" for half an hour, and Andy sings lead on 5 songs, and multiple covers are performed, you would rather watch that then the SOTT Film? Really?

You are right about RNR affair..not a bad song, but if 2012 Prince Live is his best, I don't know what you are watching.

Exactly.

Giovanni777 said:

Great performance... I like him singing in his lower register live.

"Dance Electric" was off the hook...

I like him singing low too but that wasn't pretty. Dance Electric was pretty poor too. Just about saved it with the guitar but that wasn't anything special either.

thepope2the9s said:

Not sure why folks are hating on the live horns in the performance...HORNS live are always good with P! And yes I want to see the rest of the performance of Dance Electric...that was sounding tight!

That was about as tight as your average granny. Listen to the horns for the first 20 seconds of DE.

Where's he performing? I'm not even gonna mention the other nonce.

herb4 said:

Agreed. That was just dull and boring, which is like the worst thing you can say about a Prince performance. When the coolest thing I can think of to like is the trippy-dippy set and some of the lighting, we've got a problem here. The mix was very bad and the only thing I could hear driving the song was a very flaccid and stale keyboard riff that was way too loud. No great shakes with this performance at all. Even "Laydown" on George Lopez, regardless of what you think of the song, had some crackle and spark to it.

This was just weak.

edit:

Damn. The 1 minute we got of Dance Electric had more juice in it than the entirety of R&RLA. That's what he should have played. Is there a full version anywhere?

I agree with everything but the "Laydown" bit. I don't like the song anyway though. DE was the better of the two but neither of em impressed me.

herb4 said:

HonestMan13 said:

When your life is so devoid of substance that you can only follow a musician that you don't even appreciate any longer, who has the problem? The musician or you?

Those who feel he's lost his spark, energy, inspiration, creativity et al. should then wonder why they still follow him? Please don't run that "the old material keeps me around" line it's a cop out for why you can't find music that you enjoy or makes you feel positive thoughts instead of negative ones.

Prince is clearly not relying on repeating the 80's to get/keep/grow a fanbase. He's moved on. Why haven't you?

The majority still enjoy Prince's work and appreciate that he's still into giving us music. We aren't focused on the fact that he wore an outfit 3 times or what style his hair is in.

Well, let's see. A few things. how would I know if I didn;t care for something if I didn't, you know, fucking watch it first? "The Dance Electric" was really good, I thought, "R&RLA" pretty bad. See, here's we do on message boards: we watch the subject perform and then offer our take on it. I'm an Al Pacino fan, for instance, so I tend to watch his movies when I can. Is it OK if I didn't like "Carlito's Way" or 'Sea of Love" very much but still liked "Heat" and "Any Given Sunday" or should I just stop following his films because I didn't care for a few of them?

I also follow the Philadelphia Phillies and they didn't do so well this year so I guess I should just stop watching games. There was this one restaruant I ate at several times and on occasion, I enjoyed some entrees better than other ones. Some I didn't like at all, but I know they usually serve good food so I go back and give it another try. There are some HBO series I watch and generally they're pretty good. Some not so much. When I don't like one, or a particular episode of one, I say so, but usually come back because they tend to be good for the most part. I enjoy Stephen King books a lot but some of them I thought were terrible. I'll still usually give his work a read though because he's a good writer.

My wife made me mad one time and disappointed me with some thigns she said and did, but I know that she's a quality person overall and I love her so I didn't just go "fuck this" and leave her.

Is everything a zero sum equation where if Stephen King writes a few shitty books or Martin Scorcese makes a bad movie I shouldn't check out thier work or talk about it in any way?

Are you starting to see how this works or does everyone who didn't like the show the other night have some sort of personal problem?

Good answer. Saved me the time. BTW, Any Given Sunday wasn't all that, not as good as Heat but not as poor as Revolution. That really was shit. He was just a fuckin lissard in that maing. wink He just aint what he was in the 80's etc.... lol

I thought it was ok, you can only reinvent the wheel so many times, it's part of what drove Elvis to an early grave the "what the hell do I do now" syndrome. Elvis wanted to grow but was stifled by fans who wanted hound dog and he really didn't know what to do so you had him doing lounge lizard stuff and finally just collapsing on a bathroom floor in graceland. Damaris Lewis dances like a total "spaz"! What's up with that "dancing"? Well, Mayte can rest assured that she's still the best backup dancer Prince has had, Damaris won't be taking that title from her anytime soon!
