Sorry I hadn't even realized that what I said was actually pointing at the source of the song. My bad.

Cool.....interesting that only yesterday I had posted on the thread 'songs Prince shouldn't have redone' that the Extraloveable 2011 version was dire....and now we have this excellent remix....coincidence or is P watching?!?! wink

I kinda agree this may be the 1988 version but maybe with some newer overdubs - the piano and vocals sound 'newer' than the sound of the time....

Having said that Prince's remixes notoriously don't age...they generally still sound fresh today...

[Edited 10/6/12 15:48pm]

It's quite obviously the 2011 version with some jamming overtop.

Not at all.

Check the earlier poster who pointed out the kind of instruments and 'Batman' era sounds from 1988. I would say 1988 with recent overdubs.

I'd say it's 2011, with some stuff from the 1988 version overdubbed on it.

Unless the 2011 version is just updated from the 1988 version.

The question is... why?

In the last few weeks, we've gotten a new song to promote a concert run, and remixed bit of the single he put out a year ago for the same purposes.

Is this all adding up to something?

The last time we got this much new material through various odd sources was in the run-up to the announcement of 20TEN. Purple & Gold, Cause & Effect, Hot Summer.

These little bits are obviously being orchestrated. Schizophrenically and shamolically to be sure, but orchestrated nonetheless.

I don't get it...

What's to like on this horrible flavourless mess?

It's not even Xtraloveable...

Which is kind of what I said on the other thread that got deleted because the Org just has to be holier than thou.

I think its ok... I like the fact that it sounds a bit unrestrained for once. I still don't much care for Extraloveable new version, but this remix is a little bit of fresh air in Princeland and I think it would be interesting to hear anything else that follows this direction. I guess it would be great to hear any new music at all from him!

Lol that Was not nice.

First of all...

I think it's super-cool that she who shall not be named made this available to us.

second, I like it. Love the piano work.

My only qualm with it is, where on gods earth has Prince's beat skills gone? With great ease he uato make epic beats! Sometimes simple, sometimes complex, but always epic. WHERE HAVE THE BEAT SKILLS GONE!

Anyway, cool little track without decent percussion.

...it sounds like it took all of 3 mins to do, wow.

Rather than just flicking through a few bad keyboard sounds of pianos and clavinets and playing the first thing that comes to mind, if Prince actually bothered to take the time and mic up a real piano for once he might be a little more selective as to what he records.

as always I am totally appreciative of the gesture, these freebies are always welcome.

However, am I missing something?, do I need to get my hearing tested? because to me it's just background noise with very little to like. If so many on here dig it then that's cool but I 'll pass.

I love when he goes all "mad genius" on our asses. The rapid-fire sample triggers, jockeying from instrument to instrument with ease, all the while creating an interesting soundscape, taking you on a journey, and of course keeping it funky. Unbelievable. dead

I love how at :55 he takes it back to 90s house for a second.

Wasn't there an interview a while back where he mentioned an old studio trick that he uses? Where he punches in different musical parts at the drop of dime? I can't remember the language he used or what he called it. I thought he had mentioned it being akin to playing another instrument.

Nothing special. Surprised it's even called a remix of that song. It sounds about a much like (or derived from) Extra Lovable as the Sanford & Son theme.

Pedestrian, at best.

Wasn't this recorded in 1982? How could it be Batman era with overdubs?

I've listened to it and it's ok, just like a filler maxi single. I doubt that anyone here will say their favorite song is Clockin' The Jizz or Gangster Glam, this will be this song's fate. A C- from me.

That Batman comment was really not correct

This version is a NEW version of the 82 classic....therefore the extended remix is NEW too!

For all those wondering why so many people love this - it comes from our love for P's 12" mixes in the 80s and his B-sides....its been a long time since we heard something like this from P even if it is a rework of a classic jam from the 80s

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Yes, the original was, but this is the remix. A remix was done in 1988 and it is likely this 'new version' is it plus a few overdubs (piano and voice)...or at least borrows substantially from it.

The reason I think this is because, as some other posters here pointed out, it has a lot of the 1988 / (close to) Batman era instruments...

Princevault:

Extraloveable was first released on the stand-alone digital single Extraloveable in 2011, to promote the Welcome 2 Canada Tour beginning two days later. While the recording was new, the track itself was 29 years old.

The original track was recorded on 3 April, 1982 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (two days after re-recordingWouldn't You Love To Love Me? and two days before 3 x 2 = 6). The song was considered for inclusion on Vanity 6, but it is not known if a version with vocals by Vanity 6 was recorded. It is possible that the track was worked on further in 1983, as some of the lyrics could be interpreted as referring to Dez Dickerson's departure from the band andWendy Melvoin's arrival.

In 1988, engineer Chuck Zwicky pulled the track out from the vault and remixed it, telling Prince it should be released. During Prince: A Celebration in June, 2000, computer screens at Paisley Park Studios offered names of a selection of tracks which users could vote on for inclusion on Crystal Ball Volume II, and while the track (now known asXtralovable) was chosen by fans, the project was ultimately abandoned. It is not known whether this version was the same as an earlier version, or an alternate recording.

sorry, I don't really hear very much 1988 in this instrumental remix. I hear the 2011 version with some more organic instrumental jamming over the top. shrug

You think so? There are tracks that have been released in the last 10 years that we really don't have any sort of information about with regard to recordings dates. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of the Chocolate Invasion version of "The Dance" and things like, say "Magnificent" that we assume were recent recordings at the time of their release, but sound like they come from sessions years before (Emancipation and High eras, respectively, for those two particular examples).

With the tight control he's had over information regarding his released (and unreleased) material in the last 15 years or so, it's all speculation unless band members or engineers step forward, and there really isn't a lot of that happening in a very long time.

Though if this remix is mostly from 1988, then it's likely that the 2011 released version probably is as well. And I'll piss myself laughing when all the people that say that the 2011 version sucks ass and he shouldn't have bothered with it find out that it was from the period that they have canonized as his peak. biggrin
