Digital B-Side

(NPG Music Club)
1. Silver Tongue (Demo) (4:56)

available as a promotional single from the album Musicology (the third single overall), available in Fall, 2004. A few months before the promotional release, however, Silver Tongue (Demo) was released on the NPG Music Club Musicology Download Store as a "virtual b-side" to Call My Name, although Call My Name itself was not available as an individual download, and no promos were sent out at the time. Although Silver Tongue (Demo) was not included on any release of Call My Name, it is included here for clarity's sake. -PrinceVault

Love me while you watch the time
And if I falter or lose my rhyme
You will drop me like a useless dime
Cos you ain't no friend of mine , no no

Steer me wrong and drop me off
From a swandive to a bellyflop
The shallow waters that flow in your heart
Will forever keep us apart

You never cease to amaze me
Sometimes I just dont understand ,no,no
The chances you took to play your hand
But you never took my love when it was here

My hearts been through it a thousand times
Like a fair fruit upon the vine
The shiny promise that fades with time
But the seeds are sown and the hope defined

Such a sad way to lose someone (oh yes it is)
To live by "better said than done"
The song you dance , then hide your gun
From those who buy the silver from your tongue

And you never cease to amaze me
Sometimes I just dont understand (I dont)
The chances you took to play your hand
But you never took my love when it was here

The song you dance ,then hide your gun
From those who buy the silver from your tongue

Musicology Video Shoot

http://towertheatrela.com/

[most photos cut to load quicker]
I arrived exactly at 3:00pm, right behind what I'm guessing was Prince's black Mercedes limo, and immediately met up with some of the usual suspects (Jeremy-J7, Tamiko, Chris, and Karrie). I had come with hair and make-up "camera-ready" as per the instructions, but had my various "costume" pieces in a bag. At the base camp, however, I noticed that most people were already dressed, and I was still in my work-out pants and chanclas (to'-up slippers for the non-Spanish speakers). Since we were informed that the "fan background" would not be checked in for another hour, I went back to the parking lot w/J7, and with him and Monique as look-outs, I changed out of my grubbies and into a cocktail dress (what an odd sense of deja vu swept over me as I struggled into my clothes in the backseat of a car...j/k!)

We went back to camp and looked for a spot to sit for what would turn out to be quite a long wait. But for the most part, people seemed to make the most of it, socializing and people-watching. Eventually, we were lined up to go into the wardrobe tents and have our 'costumes' approved or, if necessary, changed. Wardrobe was satisfied with the dress and strappy heels I had on, so I took my bag back to the car and then it was back to the wait. Some beautiful Bumpsquad-ettes (sounds like a drill team) representing were Tamiko, Monique, Karrie (what a trouper!), Ruth, Krystina, Sylvia, Dee Dee, Lyn, and Dara, all looking very lovely, and the guys J7, Alan, Chris G, Edgar, Kevin and Lawrence all very "fly," as the kids say, in their suits and ties.

Finally, we were called, and we trotted across Spring Street to the Tower Theatre (one of the old, semi-abandoned movie palaces that one can still find in downtown Los Angeles). As we filed down the alley behind the theatre, we passed Maceo noodling around a bit on his sax, and Blackwell was in the back of the truck that probably transports the instruments. We could hear some of "Musicology" playing as we walked past the open back entrance of the theatre. But just as our group was about to go into the theatre and after a few of us were picked out of the line to go inside (J7 said it was like standing behind the velvet rope at SkyBar), the rest of us were sent back to camp to be fed (Domino's cheese pizza, and believe me, after 6 hours of Cheetos and water, it was the most delicious pizza EVER!)

Some of us were starting to worry that we were literally all dressed up with nowhere to go. Were they really going to use us in the video, or had we just wasted an entire Saturday sitting in a parking lot in downtown L.A.? Aside from being a "seat-filler" once at the Emmys, I had never done anything like this before, and though I knew that filming anything involves a lot of waiting around for the actors and extras, this seemed to be wearing on for too long, and the paid extras had already been called for what seemed like hours. We were assured, though, that we were going to be used, and as a matter of fact, could we please call others to come down? They needed all the extras they could get. Eventually, the 'chosen few' (Tamiko, Edgar, and Alan) came back and reported that they'd been used in a scene where a crowd stood in a circle as a couple of guys danced, as well as in a scene where the club-goers are hanging in the club, enjoying the music. They also reported that they liked what they heard of the song.

About five minutes after an eternity, we were finally called again. As we stood outside the front entrance of the theatre, we were warned not to bring anything inside that was not part of our costume (you know the drill - no cells, cameras, or recording devices of any kind), and we were wanded before being let in. By then, we had been joined by Angie, Matt (good to see you again, Sarge!), and James, thanks to Krystina's phone calls.

We were led upstairs to the balcony. I could see that the small theatre had also probably been a club for live music, because there was a good size dance floor in front of the stage. The theatre had a really cool, faded beauty. You could see that back in the day when going out to the movies was really an event, it was a beautiful place with the the ornate moldings, banisters, and balconies, the mural medallion in the ceiling, etc. It was a perfect setting for the retro feel of the video

We lined up along the banisters on each side of the second level of the theatre and had a good view of the stage. Once again, the director's assistants started picking people to position them in certain spots. Chris G, Karrie, Tamiko, Sylvia, Kevin, Matt, Dara, Oscar, Lyn, and J7 and I were some of the people sent downstairs to fill in the audience, and I saw Alan, Ruth, Edgar, Krystina, and Monique in the balconies on either side of the stage. The dancers and the band (Rhonda, Rad - both gorgeous, Renato, Maceo, Blackwell, and Greg Boyer) took the stage. We got our directions to be really hyped, and excited, and respond to whatever happens on stage as if it was a live peformance. Like they had to tell us! Some of us were already cheering before the cameras were rolling just because Prince strode toward the stage to take his position.

The music started and Prince bounded onto the stage. We in the audience were going nuts and dancing to the music, and I can tell you, at least on my part, it wasn't all acting. Even lip-synching, Prince is immensely fun to watch, especially in an energetic and funky performance like that. Not to mention, I thought he looked hot as ever. He's got a little 'fro going on, and I'm liking the suits he's been favoring lately. And those eyes...(ahem!) moving along now...

Oscar did a good job of describing the music and the vibe as reminiscent of "Rock n' Roll is Alive," but perhaps with an extra edge of funkiness. As for the video, as Oscar again well described, there were parts where dancers make their way onto the stage and dance a bit before police in riot gear shove them off. There was some realistic shoving going on. I had anti-war protest flashbacks for a second there. But the whole thing looked great from where I stood - very high energy, very fun.

They did about three or four takes, and I was really feeling the song. It's much different than what was played at BB King's before the aftershow at the Aladdin DVD screening. After the last take with the band, we did three more takes of a shot of the little boy being carried to the stage by his dad to dance. While we were postioning up for the shot, the band was watching us from the side. I saw Prince walk up to them hand in hand with Mani (she is so petite! She's barely his height with very high heels on, though to be honest, I didn't check to see how high his his heels were!)

Alright, I've gone on enough. The night finally ended at about 1:30. My feet were killing me, and I still can't get the feeling back in some of my toes. But all in all, it was a fun experience, and I look forward (fingers crossed) to the day the video makes it's debut.

One last thing - much, much love to those of you I mentioned, and also those of you I may not have mentioned due to my poor memory and fatigue. Once again, you've made this experience even more fun and special because you were all there and we shared it together. Peace!

Great story. I had to check who it's by: somebody named Sophia, in a message to the LA Bump Squad maillist. I'm jealous/happy for her.

A Million Days (unreleased video)

The american singer Prince, famous for his album Purple Rain, is currently in Panama shooting a music video in which musicians from Panama are featured as well. Prince arrived in Panama the week before, and is located in a central hotel, where he is composing the lyrics to the songs he will record together with the local musicians. The video will feature a "local star" but no nameshave been given. It has been mentioned Prince has been visiting the nightclubs of the metropol.

From July 16, 2004.

MUSICOLOGY
PRINCE

BY ANTHONY DECURTIS

Starting somewhere in the early Nineties, he seemed to disappear into his own bizarre obsessions -- the muddled jazz-fusion spirituality of The Rainbow Children (2001) and the instrumental meanderings of N.E.W.S. (2003) being only the most recent excesses. But then, late last year, his election to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame made you remember just how potent, irresistible and groundbreaking a force he once was. Then, his commanding performance with Beyonce to open the Grammys proved that he could still thrill in such a high-pressure spot. And that solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony? Devastating.

Now comes Musicology, as appealing, focused and straight-up satisfying an album as Prince has made since who can remember when. It's open, easygoing and inclusive, the sort of album anyone might like. Most notably, Musicology restores a refreshing sense of songcraft to Prince's writing. Rather than seeming like mere sketches, as so much of his recent work has, each track on the album is distinct, coherent and rigorously uncluttered -- whether it's a bluesy lament such as "On the Couch," a lovelorn meditation like "A Million Days" or a stop-time jam such as "If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life." And the singer makes it clear that he has learned that rigor from the masters. "Wish I had a dollar for every time you say/'Don't you miss the feeling music gave you back in the day?' " he sings over an insinuating bass line on the title track. Then, like Arthur Conley calling out to the R&B pantheon in his 1967 hit "Sweet Soul Music," Prince names names: " 'Let's Groove,' 'September' -- Earth, Wind and Fire/'Hot Pants,' by James/Sly's gonna take you higher."

Now forty-five, Prince realizes -- and repeatedly declares -- that his tastes are "old-school." On "Reflection," one of several ballads that float by on a sweet musical breeze reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, memory sweeps Prince away: "Remember all the way back in the day/When we would compare whose Afro was the roundest?" Moments like this rescue Prince from his eccentricities and make him recognizable again. On the sizzling funk track "Life 'O' the Party," he wryly mimics his old rival Michael Jackson ("My voice is getting higher/I ain't never had my nose done"), as if to emphasize his distance from the only pop-culture figure perceived as weirder than he is.

Its relative clarity aside, Musicology is still a Prince album, so it hardly lacks bold ideas.

"Cinnamon Girl" borrows a title from Neil Young and a deft hook from the mid-Eighties to explore racial and ethnic differences in a post-9/11 world. Other songs sprinkle offhand references to the Iraq war, the Fourteenth Amendment, the Bible, numerology and the corrupting power of greed. Prince -- who is now a Jehovah's Witness -- has dialed his trademark sexual explicitness way down. But that restraint works, too. With its sinuous grooves and effortless swing -- not to mention Prince's seductive vocals -- Musicology simmers with a submerged erotic tension.

Finally, of all things, the album is a hymn to marriage -- not the frisky fantasy stuff of "Let's Pretend We're Married" but the real domestic deal. "Did we remember to water the plants today?" the singer asks on "Reflection," Musicology's closing song, finding the secret life of love in a quotidian detail. That's an example of how Prince, who claimed that Musicology would take everyone back to school, is really the one who has understood an essential lesson: Less can be so much more.

Rhonda Smith

Prince bassist has a sound all her own

Thank heaven Prince doesn't think all women are like Darling Nikki -- willing sex objects with no other discernible talent to offer. People would be forgiven for thinking this is his actual viewpoint, but the truth reveals itself on stage.

In fact, whether it was Wendy and Lisa hammering on the keys and guitar, Sheila E. wailing on some percussion or Rosie Gaines belting out a divalicious tune, the artist formerly known as "the Artist Formerly Known as Prince" has relied on women to hold him down musically throughout his career. We might remember the male band member in the Revolution who dressed up like a surgeon for the "When Doves Cry" video, but the true standout presences in all of Prince's groups have been ladies. And the quietest, yet most anchoring, presence in his band for the past decade has been his bassist, Rhonda Smith.

Too funky to only work for the New Power Generation and not explore her own ideas as well, Smith recorded her two solo albums (the 2000 debut, Intellipop and the sizzling new RS2, which features an appearance by her famous boss) in Atlanta, and she's also interfaced with an unlikely corner of the local scene through work with artists such as rapper T.I. What could sound -- with the wrong fingerstyle -- like adult contemporary tunes is flipped into songs that could please the entire age spectrum. Prince is a notorious perfectionist with his own grooves, a quality that Ms. Smith has been happy to absorb with her own panache. And -- guess what -- she's kept her clothes on the whole time.

the dramatic video directed by Phil Harder, for Prince's new song "Cinnamon Girl," is causing quite a stir before it's even been released. The tone in this video is more serious, as it follows the hardships of a teen Arab-American girl in a post 9-11 America. The clip features Oscar-nominated New Zealand star Keisha Castle-Hughes as an Arab-American girl who is fed up with the anti-Arab sentiments she encounters in everyday life. The video is shot as a black & white video colored in in sepia and yellow tones.

What is causing all of the controversy is a scene where, disillusioned and angered, Castle-Hughes' character detonates a bomb in an airport terminal, exploding herself and others. But a reverse motion immediately following the explosion reveals that it is only a thought of hers. Prince, who only appears in the video intermittently, sings, "Cinnamon girl mixed heritage / Never knew the meaning of color lines / 9-11 turned that all around / When she got accused of this crime."

Prince says he hopes the video will get viewers thinking about the racial prejudice that still exists in many segments of American culture.

While the New York Post described the video as the most tasteless ever, the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee has praised the video for bringing attention to the discrimination faced by Arab-Americans since 9/11.

Cinammon Girl CD Single

Cinnamon Girl was the third single from the Musicology CD and was released after the tour. We released this version independently on our own, separate from Sony. Prince filmed an amazing video for the song with Phil Harder and starring Keisha Castle-Hughes which we featured in an enhanced part of the CD along with a behind-the-scenes clip. The package used images from the beautiful video.

NPG Enhanced CD single
  1. "Cinnamon Girl" – 3:56
  2. "Cinnamon Girl" (Video) – 4:04
  3. "Cinnamon Girl: Xposed" (Making of the Video) – 5:15

UK/German CD single

  1. "Cinnamon Girl" – 3:56
  2. "Dear Mr. Man" (Live at Webster Hall) – 4:14
  3. "United States of Division" – 6:18
  4. "Dear Mr. Man" (Live at Webster Hall Video) – 4:14

The single has been released in multiple formats. On September 6, 2004, the European CD-single was released with four tracks: "Cinnamon Girl" (Album version), "Dear Mr. Man" (live at Webster Hall) "United States of Division" (which was previously available only as a download) and an MPEG video of the "Dear Mr. Man" performance. Two weeks later, a similar single was released, but without the video. In November of the same year, Prince's NPG Music Club online retail store sold an Enhanced CD including the audio track, its music video, the lyrics and a 5-minute segment of interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

Cinnamon Girl

As war drums beat in Babylon
Cinnamon Girl starts 2 pray
I'd never heard a prayer like this one
Never before that day

Tearful words of love 4 people she had never met before
Asking God 2 grant them mercy in this phase of holy war

Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon Girl of mixed heritage
Never knew the meaning of color lines
911 turned that all around
When she got accused of this crime

So began the mass illusion, war on terror, alibi
What's the use when the god of confusion keeps on telling the same lie?

Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon Girl

Don't cry, don't shed no tears
One lie won't make us fear
Cuz we know how this movie's ending

Cinnamon Girl

As war drums beat in Babylon
And scorch the blood red sky
Militants bomb the foreign gun
Both sides, children die

Cinnamon Girl opens the book she knows will settle all the scores
Then she prays after the war that there will not be any more

Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon Girl

Cinnamon Girl

Don't worry, baby, it's gon' be alright, yeah

United States Of Division was released on 4 July, 2004, Independence Day in the USA, as a "virtual b-side" to Cinnamon Girl. Four months later, it was included on the European CD single of Cinnamon Girl, but was not included on the US edition of the single, for unknown reasons.

The United States Of Division

2004, still at war and everybody hates Americans
Let's go!
Come on

Flyin' in an aeroplane with pen in hand
Over miles and miles of deep blue
Wonderin' if it was all part of a master plan
Forget the 1 and become 2

How could your brother hear the same music (Music, music, music, music)
Yet somehow dance 2 a different tune?
I guess that once U go divide this precious land
This precious land will divide U
Sing!

CHORUS:
Doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Everybody stop fighting

Doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Everybody make love

Drivin' a brand new Cadillac through my neighborhood
Everything still look the same, uh
Everything except the fact I wish I could
Take away all the hurt and pain (Soul)

We let Supafly straighten up our curly hair (Hair)
He took the afro out the game
It's kinda cool but the guns and drugs 2 much 2 bear
10 years later Scarface came (Who U think U messin' with?)

Sing the hook

CHORUS

(Come on)

Bridge

A united state of mind will never be divided
The real definition of unity is 1
People can slam their door, disagree and fight it
But how U gonna love the Father but not love the Son?
United States of Division

Walkin' down the street, no flag in hand
No stars and stripes, no claim 2 land
No crescent moon, just a holy man, holy man

How far from heaven must we go
Before the winds of change will blow and show
This world how it's supposed 2 be
Land of peace and harmony?
Come on

Everybody stop fighting
Everybody make love
Everybody stop fighting
United States of Division

People can slam their door, disagree and fight it
But how U gonna say U love the Father and not love the Son?
United States of Division

Black (Division)
White (Division)
Straight (Division)
Gay (Division)
Christian (Division)
Muslim

Why must I say "God Bless America"
And not the rest of the world?
(Oh say can U see?)
I love my country but I love God more
Every man, women, boy and girl
Ooh, can U sing with me?

CHORUS
(Come on)
(Everybody)
(Oh)
(Put your gun down)
(Hey)
(Everybody gather round, gather round)
(Talk 2 me)
(What is this rush 2 declare war?)
(What we fightin' 4?)
(Hey)
(Oh)
(Come here, baby)

Talkin' 2 United States, United States, United States of Division!

Everybody make music
Everybody make love

GREAT THREAD...

you realy out do your self ! also a wonderful time to be a Prince fan during this time.

Dude was back in full effect. I think this time era is when the mainstream public really forgave him

for the changing of his name fiasco. ( though i understand and never held it against him).

good album to. fav song has to be "reflection"

It really was a 'Comeback' of sorts for Prince

This is also the period where he started having Wendy Sheila Morris Day/the Time, Lisa performing with him again
