It's just a thought, but... Maybe he wants to wait until he gets his masters back? I dunno... But sure, we'd all like to get our hands on a box set from Prince. But as long as he doesn't... I'm fine with that too, I'll just listen to something else...

about two years ago prince himself told some people that he'd been getting his masters back one by one and was up to "dirty mind" by that time. iirc, anyway.
so he's probably got "controversy" and "1999" as well by now, or at least he will get "1999" this year.
so maybe he is waiting, who knows. it's gonna be two more years for "purple rain" though, if we are to believe he's getting them back already.
does that mean we'll have to wait 2 or 3 more years? and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Please stop spreading that peachandblack rumor as the gospel truth please.
It's obviously not the case but a misinterpretation of what he said, since nothing has happened nor has anything official been announced. (he would have to file for the rights to revert at least two years in advance tho')
The only thing we can really be sure of is that the law says it's 35 years before the rights return to the creator(s), who also actually filed for their rights to return to them.
That means, that everybody on this thread so far is speaking and/or complaining too soon. You will have to wait untill next year for the fireworks to start with For You, if there is gonna be any.
Probably a couple of years longer when the shit really hits the fan with 1999 and Purple Rain.
But for sure, next year will see many lawsuits in the entire US music industry over the 35 year rule.
That and nothing else. While that doesn't exclude the possibility that WB has already agreed to revert the master rights sooner to Prince, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever for them why they would, except when Prince would give them something nice in return.
But how likely is that??
Also, most people don't realise how complicated this matter could get or already is. Legally it's completely new territory since 2013 is going to be the first year that this 35 year rule will ever be applied and tested in practice. And the interests at stake are MASSIVE.
People should also understand and realise that this rule by definition not ONLY applies to P, but also to the artists he worked (closely) with on his albums. This means lawsuits could be flying all over the place in 2019 when the rights to the PR recording (and publishing when applicable) should be reverting back to its creator(s).
I am positive they are talking about it, Prince, WB and other main players such as W&L, that is. But I am not positive that they are any closer to a "resolution"....

And not to be a pain in the ass, but to make matters possibly even worse:
This 35 year rule is solely a US law.
It doesn't exist in other countries where Prince's music is also sold.
What about that?
It's totally unclear still, legally, whether the righst to publish and sell his music around the world will also revert to him or if it will only be the US based rights...
Point is: a deal is very much preferred for everybody involved.

Even if Prince doesn't own those masters yet, - why arent WB doing anything about it? That would give him more exposure to younger audiences (not talking 12 year olds but people 16-30). So I def think it's about time, Prince has some type of box out, he could start with Purple Rain since that's his most famous work to date, the box could include outtakes + dvd and unseen footage, a live album. Because Prince - obviously- has the power to stop remasters. That or they still hate him so much at WB that they won't offer him no remastered box set. Or vice versa..
Nobody really knows how Prince is able to stop digitally remasters box sets and such. A fairly educated guess would be that his contract is worded in such a way that what we the fans now want is not WB's right to give to us.
But it's still ignorant because we don't know what their contract is exactly.
Also, live recordings and outtakes are a different matter. If we want those too a lot of more stuff probably has to be figured out between them....
Unfortunately

Well not until we are crying over his death! I guess that's not "never"
The question is, which protege will have to manage the remasters?

Thanx, Tremolina, your post made a lotta sense! Another thing to remember is that albums like DM or Controversy weren't really that big. For a box set to sell, it would have to be centered around a really famous album like Purple Rain or maybe Parade or Sign o'the Times.

Thanks for the info Tremolina. It's rather complex to say the least. But as I haven't got the For You album, that would be a great one to start with.

Prince isn't MJ. We should be grateful for that. Compared to what Prince has give in terms of volume and variety, he far outdoes Michael. "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

I will stand by my prediction that a deal will be in place in time to release a Purple Rain 30th anniversary box set in 2014. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

Keep up the good work. Don't you see that mr P, as a JW, might object to re-issueing certain materials because of the lyrical content? Maybe, when I he has enough debts he will cave in, but not now.
