The truth is Prince doesn't elicit strong emotions in non fans

As Prince fans we like to think that he divides the populace into those that love him and those that hate him but the truth is Prince doesn't really register with the vast majority of people.

Most of them like Purple Rain, maybe Kiss and Raspberry Beret as well but the majority of his music make's no impact on their lives whatsoever.

He doesn't deliver music that they hate or love, he's just another meh artist like the majority of artists that record music in their opinion.

He's had very little musical and cultural influence on the general public.

I don't agree or disagree with your premise, but it seems like Prince does elicit strong emotions in casual fans when he plays concerts. His visual style, aesthetic and persona is what draws people to see him in concert and occassionally check out his interviews.

Personally, I don't care if non fans "get" Prince or not. There are plenty of artists that do what Prince doesn't do to non fans, as you call it.

Isn't this stating the bleedin' obvious? Surely this applies to everyone about everything? It's one of those fundamental things no?

Not everyone is open to alternative ways of thinking. The conventional road is safer and more predictable. Prince has never fallen into the latter category. Plus, not such a large part of society is music crazy like some of us. They get by on other things.

He's had very little musical and cultural influence on the general public.

1. Depends who you talk to/hang out with/know and where you live.

The last part of your statement is pretty thin. You are talking about an artist that is constantly and consistently high ranking on many "best of" lists, has sold a HUGE number of albums sales , and can routinely sell out arenas around the world.

What is THE most common/popular way people get music these days? Itunes. Go read the itunes bio about Prince. That right there is a good barometer on how the general population/media/etc views and thinks of Prince.

2. In comparison to what other musicians? A lot of what you are saying could be said about U2, Madonna, James Brown, Elvis, Springsteen, etc.

Fact is, every form of popular entertainment has general fans who come and go with new waves of promotion. Every form of pop entertainment has hardcore fans that live and breath said entertainment everyday.

For example: James Bond. Every 3 to 5 years a new 007 flick comes out and everyone is a buzz about the new theme songs, rankings and best of 007 lists come out, and you get a slew of hype and tv specials. General fans come out of the woodwork and James Bond is on the general public's mind/lips. Then, most casual fans don't think about Bond until 3 to 5 years later. Right now we are in the middle of a wave of 007 promotion..Bond is on the brain and the new Adele single is in the ears. Were you thinking about James Bond 6 month ago? A year ago? Not unless you are a hardcore Bond fan.

In many ways it's all about promotion and publicity.

I actually think you're right about this. His impact was never to that degree the diehard fans would like to believe. I still see people who laugh @ his name being mentioned. A lot of people don't know about most of his songs [or albums] past a certain point, or up to a certain point as well. Can't argue this opinion whatsoever.... lol

I kind of agree with this statement too - because you mention Prince to people you may enter into a discussion with and they either roll their eyes or say they like Purple Rain, but other than that, they feel he is not really current. Sadly.

But of course when they see him in concert they appreciate him, but not everyone goes to a concert.

Younger people just say "who is Prince?" or think it is just some old guy that used to be popular.

We of course, know better - but it is really Princes fault for not making himself relevant to the general public now - you sometimes hear an old song on the radio but that is about it.

It can be tough being a Prince fan to keep his torch going lol

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Again, these things can be said of any artist and non fans.

Quick, when did Pearl Jam's last album come out? What was it called? I bet only a "true" Pearl Jam fan knows off the top of their head. Isn't this the way is goes?

So what is the point of the original post?

Do any artists elicit emotional responses from nonfans? Isn't that why they are "non fans"?

I dont understand this type of thinking at all, Prince is one of the most known artists from the 80s. He's had a couple of hits that people know him for and he still sells out concerts 2 decades later. The reasons I've heard why people don't like him all that much, is because of his voice (some say he screams 2 much) and the way he dresses(which has nothing to do with his music imo). He will never be as popular like Madonna, Whitney, MJ because he wasnt succesful during the 90s as the other ones were. He's a pretty known artist and has become rich with his work as an artist, it's not like he's Todd Rundgren.

The average person really doesn't even know Prince still sings. Most people think he stopped performing after The Most Beautiful Girl area lol when you tell people that he is still making cd's and has been for years they're like GET THE FUCK OUGHTTA HERE lol

Come on now, the average person is too busy watching Honey Boo Boo and Keeping up with the Kardashians.

The "average person" has never really been the fanbase that Prince has catered to either. Sure, Prince could get his own reality show, or be on The Voice to draw in "the average person." However, he also could have made Purple Rain 2 in 1985/6 to cater to a larger (average) audience. He also could have a website, remaster his back catalog and half a good promotional team/manager. As it stands, he is hit and miss at promoting himself and usually does only when he wants to.

All in all there is a bit of truth to his line from DMSR:

"Everybody screw (forget) the masses. We only want to have some fun."

Yes. Yes, it is. Substitute anyone's name for "Prince" in the OP and it'll be just as true.

I saw Peter Gabriel at the Hollywood Bowl last weekend. He did some amazing renditions of less famous tracks like "The Family and the Fishing Net" while a lot of people were waiting in the beer line. Of course everyone was back in their seats for "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time." Those were the hits and that's why most of them came.

I would say as far as the 1980s were concerned he did. (I guess other entertainers, musicians, etc can be considered)

Prince had a wide impact on music and entertainment, many big acts inspired by him and his career.

Many people who did music that you'd always wondered if this was a new Prince protege act, George Michael said that Prince was his main influence in his 1st solo album and direction. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis via Janet and many of their acts were indirectly or directly impacted by Prince and the Minneapolis Sound, rap groups like Public Enemy who wanted sample more of Prince music, Let's Go Crazy guitar solo being looped in one of their songs that I can't recall at the moment. And many entertainers into the 1990's inspired by 1980's Prince:meshell ndegeocello, devante swing(Jodeci) even Bobby Brown late 1980's a lot of the look I noticed he had similar to Prince's lovesexy like Sheila E's outfits

I don't think his impact was big at all in the 1990's, I agree
