PURPLE RAIN is NOT a great album, is it?

Let's Go Crazy - silly riff, silly lyrics, the ending is loud and tasteless, that scream is soooo low-class bored2

Take Me With U - ugh, cheesy and sticky, sounds like something you can hear in a Disney teen sitcom

The Beautiful Ones - clearly the best song of the entire album (those screams at the end nearly ruin the song, though), but a single flower doesn't make a bunch, does it???

Computer Blue - what's with the title, blue? why blue? too many changes, the song drove me mad, fuck it

Darling Nikki - confused mysoginistic crap, I don't even wanna talk about it, not even Tommy Lee would write something like this (well, perhaps he would)

When Doves Cry - yeah sure, doves crying? since when do birds cry?? stupid title song, repetitive, and it sounds cheap! without a bassline, the song doesn't roll, overrated song

I Would Die 4 U - then die already, the song is short, but it seems to go on forever, repetitive as hell!!!, and I don't understand the lyrics confuse

Baby I'm A Star - ok, you're great I get it next please bored2

Purple Rain - good, but bad lyrics and OVERLONG!!!!!

The lyrics on every song on Purple Rain (except for TMWU) are badass.

Don't even play.

Oboy. I'm not gonna go there.
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I think the songs are great; but I don't like the performance/production.. so it's not an album I listen to often. I don't really like it.

There are times I have wondered what I would think of Let's Go Crazy if I heard it for the first time as a 40 year old man (the way I first heard Compassion)

The lyrics are pretty silly, the song is repetetive...but the thing does have a lot of energy, and the little details in the beginning & end set it apart, I think. I actually think a song like Compassion is okay, but I would still have to give the nod to Let's Go Crazy, even accounting for my bias of having known it for almost 3o years!

I actually think Prince's songs are not really worse nowadays than they used to be.

As Joe pointed out, the songs on PR are pretty simple, but it's the energy, the freshness, the details, the personality that make them interesting and lasting.

Crazy and Danceable

Take Me With U - ugh, cheesy and sticky, sounds like something you can hear in a Disney teen sitcom

Strings are awesome. Take away apples and it's fine

The Beautiful Ones - clearly the best song of the entire album (those screams at the end nearly ruin the song, though), but a single flower doesn't make a bunch, does it???

Ruin it? It shows P's emotion overwhelming beautifully.

Computer Blue - what's with the title, blue? why blue? too many changes, the song drove me mad, fuck it

Cryptic lyrics, interesting music. It's a suite

Darling Nikki - confused mysoginistic crap, I don't even wanna talk about it, not even Tommy Lee would write something like this (well, perhaps he would)

neutral neutral neutral neutral neutral neutral neutral

When Doves Cry - yeah sure, doves crying? since when do birds cry?? stupid title song, repetitive, and it sounds cheap! without a bassline, the song doesn't roll, overrated song

You've officially lost all credibility

I Would Die 4 U - then die already, the song is short, but it seems to go on forever, repetitive as hell!!!, and I don't understand the lyrics confuse

The lyrics are meant to be cryptic.

Baby I'm A Star - ok, you're great I get it next please bored2

Probably the song most meant to go with the movie. Nice and dancey.

Purple Rain - good, but bad lyrics and OVERLONG!!!!!

Bad lyrics? The songs lyrics are beautiful some of Prince's best. Overlong? The song is an epic. Whenever anyone wants to mention an epic song people will either say Purple Rain or Stairway To Heaven.

PR is one of those projects that came along at the right time. Especially coming off of a big album like 1999.

I'm not going to say whether it's good or bad, but I will say that it was the record that made Prince a bonafied superstar. Whether you think the album is a great piece of work doesn't really matter.

Not to mention many of the hits from the album still get radio play and resignates with younger audiences. If that's not a classic album, I don't know what is.

from wikipedia

Purple Rain is regularly ranked among the best albums in music history. Time magazine ranked it the 15th greatest album of all time in 1993, and it placed 18th on VH1's Greatest Rock and Roll Albums of All Time countdown. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it the second-best album of the 1980s and 76th on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Zounds magazine ranked it the 18th greatest album of all time. Furthermore, the album placed 4th in Plásticos y Decibelios' list of The Greatest Albums of All Time. Finally, in 2007, the editors of Vanity Fair labeled it the best soundtrack of all time and Tempo magazine named it the greatest album of the 1980s.[1] In 2012, Slant Magazine listed the album at #2 on its list of "Best Albums of the 1980s" behind only Michael Jackson's Thriller.[2] That same year the album was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.". The 1000th issue of Entertainment Weekly dated July 4, 2008 listed Purple Rain at number one on their list of the top 100 best albums of the past 25 years.[4] The RIAA lists it as having gone platinum 13 times over.[5] To date, it has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, becoming the seventh best-selling soundtrack album of all time.[6]

Prince won two Grammy Awards in 1985 for Purple Rain, for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or TV Special, and the album was nominated for Album of the Year. Purple Rain also won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score in 1985.Purple Rain sold 13 million units in the United States, including 1.5 million in its debut week,[17] earning a Diamond Award from the Recording Industry Association of America. According to Billboard magazine, the album spent 24 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard album charts (August 4, 1984 to January 18, 1985) becoming one of the top soundtracks ever.

It's also the album that instantly turned me into a lifelong Prince fan after just 1 listen.
