Nobody ruined anything for me. I rarely used TDG because I usually already know what's out and what's on it and what to expect from the sound quality without a site like that. I've been collecting boots for 24 years, TDG was nothing but a handy resource to me.

My issues remain: information & discussion of bootlegs is not illegal, nor is it against the rules of the org. It's not even unusual for the org. Until that changes you are trying to impose your own rules based on your paranoia. I'm not even saying the paranoia isn't warranted, but, if it is, sit your ass down and let the mods decide if the rules need to change.

Having said that, the second bootleg above is an example of the sort of thing that I think Prince himself should be selling at his concerts.

Housequake's shutdown was one of the worst moments the Prince fanbase has ever seen, but losing the org? What would be really lost and missed is beyond me.

I'm not saying that I'd like this place to die. I'm just saying nothing great would be lost if it did.

Looking at it purely from the perspective of Prince's camp for a moment, TDG existed soley to assist people to learn about bootlegs. No, there were no links to actual downloads, but the site itself (AFAIK) hosted the images that were up there, plus they provided plenty of google fodder for anyone who wanted to find the albums. It's entire purpose was centred around bootlegs.

Prince communities like Prince.org have all sorts of discussions - bootlegs being just one of them. Also, as much as there are images in the posts, they are all hosted externally (imageshack, etc...) so the legalities become trickier, as I understand it.

Perhaps more importantly, there is a pay off to Prince for letting places like this one exist, complete with images and undesirable discussions, because, as has been said, without such things, the communties would all but dry up. As much as I'm sure he doesn't like to admit it (and has rallied against it in the past), this would be a particularly poor business move.

Closing TDG represents a much smaller PR risk in comparison to closing every fansite (again), particularly the most populated and active of them all.

I don't think we can assume that because action has been threatened against TDG, that warnings to other Prince fansites will follow. The game might not have changed - it might be simply that whoever was in charge of looking after Prince's online interests has just gone across the board and 'picked up the slack', so to speak, where perhaps some things had previously been allowed to slide.
