Well, I take some satisfaction in the fact that this thread and the other TDG thread have been competing for the top spot in PM&M all day long. I don't think Prince's management wanted this to be the leading topic of conversation on prince.org today as opposed to his Chicago concerts. But, then again, what do I know?

You jokin... right?

Right now, when I add up the number of views for the three threads related to the TDG mess, the total number of views is 6,977. By contrast, the thread on the Chicago concerts, which is a sticky and on the front page, has 7,773 views. And the TDG threads have 268 replies as opposed to 103 for the concert thread. Even if you assume that half of the TDG replies are from one crazy fan named electricberet, that's still more than the concert threads.

I'm not in the concert promotion business but if I were promoting the Prince concerts, I would probably rather have people talking about the concert than some website that only the most diehard orgers seem to have been familiar with.

Prince doesnt give one iota of a fuck what any of yall think or are mad at. YOU KNOW THAT. I'm not sure totally sure why remasters haven't happened, nor is it about bootlegs as to why I feel the way I feel. I just think Prince's ego tripping is really getting in the way of his legacy. He's made some damn good music, but his control issues/religious beliefs/his "holier than thou" attitude is ruining everything imo.....shrug

I may be guilty of making snarky comments about concerts I haven't attended. But nothing I say will prevent you or anyone else from attending any Prince concert. The action of Prince's lawyers, on the other hand, means that no one can go to the TDG website now. The resource is gone, and it may be too late to do anything about it. My concern is with what happens next. You won't have to look through many threads in PM&M to find one discussing a bootleg, and even encouraging fans to seek it out. And you can look at practically any thread and find people using images of Prince, which is another thing the lawyers objected to according to the TDG website. All those cute photo threads could be grounds for a cease-and-desist letter. I hope that will not happen, but if the shutting down of TDG is met with a collective shrug among the fans, the lawyers may decide to come after prince.org next.

Beret, take my advice and don't even try to argue pros and cons with minions that even had no clue of the importance or existence of the TG. It's pointless, honestly! lol

Tell me what person in their right and sane mind, would take your delusional, bs lies, rumors, hearsay, etc., etc., that you post here seriously? TDG was soooo important because they posted bootleg info. Yeah ok. falloff

When will yall realize that? When will yall realize not having youtubery or bootleggery of his owrks will not make a dent in his over all legacy etc.

Close. It was the headline in the Times of London when Mick and Keith were given harsh sentences for drug possession.

I don't want to affect his upcoming concerts. I'd be satisfied with some official statement (by which I mean on Dr. Funkenberry's page) addressing the issue with TDG, telling his side, and making it clear that he's not planning to go after other fan sites like this one. Is that too unreasonable?

Yup, I made a thread over a year ago [called something similar] about this, & I'm no longer softening the blow of my personal feelings..... Fuck Prince! This dude is one of the biggest [little] drama queens ever. So, until he starts caring about fans/supporters, I will no longer support his music. I'm strictly free downloading anything he releases in the future, & I hope bootleggers run even more rampant all over his shit. He's all about $ [& has terrible business sense @ that, hence his paranoia], so there's no reason for me to spend my hard earned $ anymore...

I feel that we should all ignore him actually. People should stop going to his shows too, if you ask me, just to bring him back down to Earth. If it wasn't for the cool people on this site, I really don't think I'd come here @ all. I'm a big fan of his music, but his ego tripping really makes me lose a lot of respect for him. It also makes it a lot harder for me to even take him serious anymore....

Sure, I could have kept these thoughts to myself, & I'm sure there are many of you who will disagree & call me names & shit [feel free.....This is Prince.org, & won't be the first time I've been called anything on this site lol]. I just had to get that out... lol

They can't go see the Stones, 'cause their gonna be playing their hit songs. Nobody wants to hear them play Satisfaction for the 10,000th time! I mean, that's what I keep hearing from Prince fans.

Folks don't wanna hear songs they actually recognize. Every classic artist should just play B-Sides, Unreleased songs, new album tracks, and rarities.

Again like I said, Prince was always a control freak. Always has been, always will be. So this thread is pretty much proving what was already proven once people decided to be a fan of the guy's music.

I agree.

Of course I'm disappointed that Prince chooses to do some of the things that he does. I respect and love the guy for the joy his music has given me and for his hard work and dedication but personally i think he has issues. As a long time fan, i use to get mad at prince when i would hear about his bullshit but now i guess I'm just indifferent. I'll still buy his music and go to his Concerts but other than that. Meh.

The sad thing is that Prince is a "special" person and is blessed beyond belief. You can see that something in his personality. He's already an inspiration but he could be much more if he could just work thru his ego, his past hurts and his insecurities. Considering the talent and charisma that the guy has he could be more than what he already is.

I think we're caught in some semi-legal zone here... Even if a site is not actually selling bootlegs, then still, fans coming to this site saying "this particular cd is really good" is as much as an advert. I think Prince sees it this way and I really can't blame him for it. And it surely won't stop me from seeing his shows. Because that will give me another bootleg to buy!Like Timmy said, don't be surprised that the man is a control freak

Nothing semi-legal about it. It's freedom of speech pure and simple.

Since I already said it on another thread, I'm just going to quote myself from here:

djThunderfunk said:

I can talk or write about crack cocaine, robbing banks, or murder without being prosecuted for "tempting, encouraging, inviting" others that may be so inclined to participate in actually comitting those crimes because I'm free to talk about whatever I want. This is a simple concept.

and then this:

djThunderfunk said:

how I learned of the existence of a bootleg market of Prince recordings....

Back in December 1987 I read about the Black Album being canceled and subsequently bootlegged in my LOCAL NEWSPAPER. Not long after that I read a review of the Black Album in ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE. The review was clear that the album was a bootleg and that Prince canceled the album and didn't want it released.

This information led me to search out the Black Album. When I found it I also found other bootlegs, both live and outtake collections, of material I had never heard of. I've been hooked on Prince bootlegs ever since.

But I digress... my point is, by your logic, my local newspaper and Rolling Stone should be held accountable for encouraging me to seek out and buy bootlegs. Not just me either. Many, many, many obsessed Prince fans came to collecting bootlegs this way. Just ask around.

There is no law preventing people from talking about or reviewing material that is circulating just because it doesn't happen to be officially released. And that's a good thing...

As Stan Lee would say, 'Nuff Said!

There certainly are, but I think you would want a lawyer who doesn't collect bootlegs, who can more persuasively make the argument that it's a free speech issue. They could contact the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Absolutely, as I mentioned on the other thread. If you have a site that displays his image on a bootleg cd for example, then that leads to discussion of the music on that cd, ( which is Prince's music), then does that not invite, encourage, entice fans frequenting that site and commenting on those cds, to seek that bootleg material, whether for free or for a fee? What you're doing is 'advertising' that a bootleg of his music material exists and using his image without his permission to advertise that bootleg material. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Example, let's say if you took a designer bag, and made an imitation of it, and displayed it on your site, and visitors of your site are interested in the 'imitation' of that designer bag, discussing how it looks exactly like an original, and are told those imitations exist, it's more than likely some will want to know where to get it. Would that not be a violation on behalf of the original designer of that bag? So isn't providing info about existing bootlegs of a musician's music material be considered a violation as well?

[Edited 9/1/12 12:25pm]

No it would not. See above or see my response to when you said it on the other thread.

Is freedom of speech a difficult concept to grasp?
