Nothing regarding his career being greater or lesser involves bootlegs. You are giving them too much credit. And rest assured..his legacy is solid with or without them.

You kidding me? Out of all the Prince collectors I know, including myself, the bootlegs drive our interest to actually purchase. I didn't buy any Prince stuff until after I heard the Black Album in 1988. Before that I just borrowed his records from a friend (who actually stopped buying his stuff around 1988 and didn't get into bootlegs). I turned down a free ticket to see the Purple Rain concert back in high school. I was not intrigued enough to care.

These days if I want to illustrate that Prince is a creative genius in the studio or live, it's only the bootlegs that would reinforce that idea to new intelligent people that I meet.

When you see a top ten list in 1988 from Bono and The Edge include the Black Album, or an intelligent retrospective article from a music critic mention a project like Dream Factory, you should be getting a little bit aware that these items, songs, and his live performances are a key factor in intelligent fandom of Prince. and it's intelligent fandom that matters 50 years from now. Those people would write the books, direct the movies, create the websites, record tributes that document and promote his thang.

The closest Prince came to tapping into this was with his earlier incarnations of the NPG music club, where he would give out unheard studio cuts, soundboard tracks, and upload MP3's of his "radio shows". Those were steady times with him pushing his hype in a way with substance.

I never said people have not been or are not interested in bootlegs nor did I say that with many bootlegs have made them more intrigued as fans.

That still doesnt negate the fact that with or without bootlegs, Princes legacy is still heralded as one of the very best to have ever done it .Just because YOU and your experiences of "intelligent fandom" (lol) were due to bootlegs doesn't mean his offical releases, performances, and career overall isn't already solidified as top ten greatest.

Besides, you dont like Computer Blue so your opinion(s) are negated.

Guys, guys. Stop the bickering. We can all agree on the main point here: Prince leaked all of these bootlegs himself in the first place (because he was upset about his deafness and club foot) do he can take down TDG and other sites whenever he feels like it. Haters eat toast!

I think you just need to try and broaden your perspective on this, Tittypants.

Maybe Prince isn't a really bad human being at all.

Maybe he's a really really really nice honeybadger?

I suspect the heralds of the media that are saying "Prince is one of the all time best" are well aware of the bootlegs and unauthorized videos and considering those in their estimation

The heralds aware of only official Prince sanctioned material proclaim him a wonder of the 80's for things like Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, and Sign O' the Times.

But who with any knowledge of Prince and an active interest in pop music culture doesn't know about his bootleg output? I've met unrelated, nonfan, studio engineers, filmmakers, musicians, artists, who are well aware of the unofficial work, and have listened to or seen at least a few of those things and respect it. And then there's the people who tell me stories of Prince recording stuff through a week that goes unheard (officially or unofficially).

And, it's only intelligent/constructive fandom that is creating any kind of record of what makes Prince extraordinary. All the detailed books, the websites, the magazines, and even the celeb endorsements are based on knowledge of all the unofficial material too. What you might call the "heralds" are what I'm calling the intelligent fans. The ones that write and record history acting as "heralds".

Have you read one decent prince bio that doesn't go into unofficial material?

Yeah and the official "Computer Blue" is kind of a lame song compared to others on that album. The bootleg version rectifies that somewhat when I play it for people. But generally speaking the official "Computer Blue" both as a composition, or as a pop song, or lyrically is not all to most people. Computer Blue proves my point that the bootleg element elevates Prince's material and legacy.

Just go out and play either version it for people that are intensely/analytically into pop music and see.

I am just thrilled that Prince is in the world. Even if he never puts out any more new music, I am still ploughing my way through all of the boots! I find new stuff every week that I have never experienced b4. Either music, film, books, articles and on and on. We also have 30+ years of other stuff to revisit, reinterpret, disect ,enjoy and on and on.

I just wish that he could be left alone to do whatever HIS ASS WANTS 2 DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are just so blessed to have such a unique musical genius amongst us. I love him moody anyway.

Let me make this clear (in this and every thread I've been posting in that discuss bootlegs):

Do not ask me how to get, or where to get, or directly for, any bootlegs. Don't ask me in the threads. Don't ask me via orgnote. Do. Not. Ask.

At this point, considering the paranoia up in here due to the closing of The Digital Garden, I have to assume every request is an attempt to entrap me specifically or the org in general. I cannot give the person asking the benefit of the doubt of newbie ignorance. It's not worth it.

Any and all requests for me to violate org policy will be reported.

That is all.

What he needs is for someone with half a set of balls and maybe a little bit of money - or a lawyer that will work on contingency - to countersue him for harrassment or defamation and actually seek monetary damages. It'd be interesting to see if the little shit has the balls to show up in a courtroom, sue one of his fans and reap the bad publicity something like that would generate. I can't think of another artist who holds his fans in such contempt. I really can't.

I loooong ago stopped paying money for his music, bootleg or otherwise, and I honestly don;t understand why people continue to do so. Dude spends more money on clothes in one week than most of us probably make in year but somehow WE'RE the problem? Who paid for his symbol jewelry, his fancy clothes, his guitars..shit...who paid for his LAWYERS? We did. Fuck him. He's never getting another dime out of me. If he tours, I might take in a show because he's just that good, but I've amassed more recorded material over the last 6 or 7 years or so without spending a nickel than I did in the previous 20 just to spite him.

His attitude is tired, petulant and silly and it wears a person down after a while. This goes all the way back to Love4OneAnother and the Crystal Ball bullshit. Why should we jump through his hoops when he consistently bites the hand that feeds him every chance he gets?

I think we're caught in some semi-legal zone here... Even if a site is not actually selling bootlegs, then still, fans coming to this site saying "this particular cd is really good" is as much as an advert. I think Prince sees it this way and I really can't blame him for it. And it surely won't stop me from seeing his shows. Because that will give me another bootleg to buy!Like Timmy said, don't be surprised that the man is a control freak

Absolutely, as I mentioned on the other thread. If you have a site that displays his image on a bootleg cd for example, then that leads to discussion of the music on that cd, ( which is Prince's music), then does that not invite, encourage, entice fans frequenting that site and commenting on those cds, to seek that bootleg material, whether for free or for a fee? What you're doing is 'advertising' that a bootleg of his music material exists and using his image without his permission to advertise that bootleg material. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Example, let's say if you took a designer bag, and made an imitation of it, and displayed it on your site, and visitors of your site are interested in the 'imitation' of that designer bag, discussing how it looks exactly like an original, and are told those imitations exist, it's more than likely some will want to know where to get it. Would that not be a violation on behalf of the original designer of that bag? So isn't providing info about existing bootlegs of a musician's music material be considered a violation as well?

[Edited 9/1/12 12:25pm]

This is complete bullshit and your example is bad. The Grateful Dead encouraged the trading and selling of thier material for years. They used to let fans plug into their soundboard at shows to get good recordings. They were consistently one the highest grossing acts in music year after year without ever really having a hit record. Their shows sold everywhere they went, their fanbase was the most loyal ever seen and they made a fucking fortune without selling a shit ton of records.

The only time they went after people was when they violated their trademarked stuff (art, logos, etc.) when people bootlegged t-shirts.

I can tell you for a fact that Prince damn near started a riot at a One Nite Alone show in Atlanta in 2002 when he made all of his loyal 'Rainbow Children', who had already paid an NPG membership fee, in addition to the ticket price, stood in line for hours on end (and probably skipped work to boot) just for a shot at good seats and early access to the soundcheck (which turned out to be a Q&A session composed mostly of Prince preaching to us about 'The Truth' and Jesus and all that and how much more he knows about God than we do).

We weren't searched when we entered (for *gasp* recording equipment) and he asked us all if we had been in between telling us all about God. When he was finished, for some miraculous reason, we were all made to exit the venue, reque the line we had spent half a day forming, be searched by a clueless and totally unprepared and untrained staff who were as baffled and frustrated as we were, asked for our passes again (god forbid anyone left theirs at their seat with their stuff in order to hold it) and then all let back into the venue in a completely different order than we'd been the first time.

People started jacking other people's seats - people who had just gotten there were claiming "general admission" rights and people who took the whole day just to get a front row shot at seeing their hero were fucked. Prince's security was no where to be found. It was a fucking mess and a sham. Most people were cool and took the seat they originally had but of course there were several folks who had their seats hijacked, that they'd paid good money for and waited a long time for, suddenly screwed out of thier seats. There were almost fights breaking out.

Wanna know what your hero did about it? Gave us all a tongue lashing and a lecture for the drama that HE started by not having ample security and people in place who were taught and trained and paid to know what the fuck was going on and search people so that Prince can control his precious bootleg recordings amongst the circle of fans that pay the most money to keep Prince's career alive and like him the most. If Prince wanted that much control, he should have been on top of it from the start and not lambast and scold the people who'd paid the most money to go see him just so he could be sure no one in his 'Purple Circle' had a tape recorder.

I asked him about it the next night and if he knew anything about what reall happened and he said "No. I wasn't here, remember?" Right....the NPG staff just up and decided to usher us all out for some reason. So he's a liar and a dick.

I'm not mad at you, I just think your posts lack substance and that you conveniently ignore anything anyone else writes that contradicts with your view on things. For example, the entire analogy I made about being on "team Obama" before before the "purple pom pom" commment that got you all butt hurt about, as well as everything I wrote besides admitting "I'd go see him live if it's convenient because he's a great performer". If you ignore the things I write, directly aimed at your shot at me for admitting "I'd go see a show if it was close" but "I won't do these other things", then of course it makes no sense because you rob any context of anything I said. I am responding DIRECTLY to stuff you "lol" at and you're offering nothing to the conversation.

And I'm not deflecting anything. I'm DIRECTLY calling you out for blatantly ignoring my opinions (and those of other reasonable posters with similar gripes), cherry picking what you respond to and thinking it makes us all hypocrites because you just LOVE.....PRINCE...THAT......MUCH and he's just so fucking cool.

Do you own bootlegs? Ever download any shit for free? Be honest, and when you're done ignoring every point I make in my posts, tell the thread how you justify that.

So he's a liar and a dick.

sorry, i just can't take you seriously since you admitted you will see him again in concert. lol

lol

Don't get mad at ME because I pointed out how stupid you sounded ..cursing him "fuck him", up in arms, quoting history and then ending with ......"Im still goin to see him." lol

And dont deflect it by trying to turn it on to me with purple pom poms comment. That doesn't even make sense.

Herb you are posting like you are irrational at this moment. However I do apologize making the "stupid" remark. I shouldn't have done that and didn't mean to be rude to you. Ill answer those questions later.

Prince is a dick. Prince is playing here in Chicago. I'm not going to see him. I will always love Prince's music but nothing in the other set lists for his W2A shows is remotely making me regret my decision.

I hope that my fellow Prince fans have a great time.

Haha. Yeah, man. You sure told me and set me straight (by ignoring my entire post). Did you miss the part where I said "because he's just that good live" and he's one of the best live acts I've ever seen, or are you too busy waxing your hard on and congratulating yourself for surrenderig all your bootlegs in 07 because you're a a 'true fan'? I won't road trip out of my way to go see him, I'll tell you that. You know what? You're right. Prince is totally cool to his fans all the time, not at all dick to anyone ever and has never ripped off his gullible followers.

Whay you're saying sounds like I can't be pissed off at Barrack Obama for some things and still vote for him I guess, right? Here's the thing. In 08, I volunteered, canvassaed, phone banked and donated money to the Obama campaign. This time I won't even though I'll probably still vote for him. See if you can lose the purple pom poms and grasp the difference there.

Don't get mad at ME because I pointed out how stupid you sounded ..cursing him "fuck him", up in arms, quoting history and then ending with ......"Im still goin to see him." lol

[Edited 9/4/12 9:58am]

And here's some more news.

I can think that Marlon Brando, Michael Moore or Tom Cruise are dicks too and still find myself watching their movies becuase they're good at what they do. I can think that Barrack Obama is a shitty President but still vote for him anyway because he's the best we've got. I can hate BP for the Gulf oil spill and still fill up at the gas station when I need fuel. I can hate the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and still buy a soldier a drink and wish him well when I see him at the airport.

Do you not understand nuance and are otherwise incapable of parsing language or are you just being deliberately obtuse and snarky for reasons I don't understand?

What he needs is for someone with half a set of balls and maybe a little bit of money - or a lawyer that will work on contingency - to countersue him for harrassment or defamation and actually seek monetary damages. It'd be interesting to see if the little shit has the balls to show up in a courtroom, sue one of his fans and reap the bad publicity something like that would generate. I can't think of another artist who holds his fans in such contempt. I really can't.

I loooong ago stopped paying money for his music, bootleg or otherwise, and I honestly don't understand why people continue to do so.

Yep. Agreed.

I'm not irrational at all and you don't have to apologize. I don't mind people thinking I'm silly as long as they address what I write and not just one sentence that they find hypocritical, contradictory or funny. And I openly admitted why I'd go see him concert, the same way I would go see a Clint Eastwood or Tom Cruise flick or any other movie with someone in it I didn't care much for personally.

Here's the thing. I was an NPGMC member, a L4OA member and a big supporter for a long time. I spent a lot of money on Prince's shit because I think his music is great. I shared his bootlegs, went out of my way to buy the 'official stuff' because I wanted to support the cause and have his back. I stopped going out of my way (knocking on doors, voulonteering, etc.) because I got tired of being ripped off. I've never felt ripped off at a Prince concert. He's still the greatest musician and showman of my generation. Nothing he does to his fans changes that for me.
