Absolutely, as I mentioned on the other thread. If you have a site that displays his image on a bootleg cd for example, then that leads to discussion of the music on that cd, ( which is Prince's music), then does that not invite, encourage, entice fans frequenting that site and commenting on those cds, to seek that bootleg material, whether for free or for a fee? What you're doing is 'advertising' that a bootleg of his music material exists and using his image without his permission to advertise that bootleg material. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.
Example, let's say if you took a designer bag, and made an imitation of it, and displayed it on your site, and visitors of your site are interested in the 'imitation' of that designer bag, discussing how it looks exactly like an original, and are told those imitations exist, it's more than likely some will want to know where to get it. Would that not be a violation on behalf of the original designer of that bag? So isn't providing info about existing bootlegs of a musician's music material be considered a violation as well?
[Edited 9/1/12 12:25pm]
This is complete bullshit and your example is bad. The Grateful Dead encouraged the trading and selling of thier material for years. They used to let fans plug into their soundboard at shows to get good recordings. They were consistently one the highest grossing acts in music year after year without ever really having a hit record. Their shows sold everywhere they went, their fanbase was the most loyal ever seen and they made a fucking fortune without selling a shit ton of records.
The only time they went after people was when they violated their trademarked stuff (art, logos, etc.) when people bootlegged t-shirts.
You should have read further down on another post, where I stated that I forgot to mention that if the imitation bags had the designer's label on it, and someone tried to sell it off as a designer original, then that would be considered illegal. I've seen cops bust street vendors on the street for doing that.
Your example in the last paragraph, is pretty much the same example re: violation of trademarked material. So you can relax now. [Edited 9/4/12 10:57am] |

Herb you are posting like you are irrational at this moment. However I do apologize making the "stupid" remark. I shouldn't have done that and didn't mean to be rude to you. Ill answer those questions later.
I'm not irrational at all and you don't have to apologize. I don't mind people thinking I'm silly as long as they address what I write and not just one sentence that they find hypocritical, contradictory or funny. And I openly admitted why I'd go see him concert, the same way I would go see a Clint Eastwood or Tom Cruise flick or any other movie with someone in it I didn't care much for personally.
Here's the thing. I was an NPGMC member, a L4OA member and a big supporter for a long time. I spent a lot of money on Prince's shit because I think his music is great. I shared his bootlegs, went out of my way to buy the 'official stuff' because I wanted to support the cause and have his back. I stopped going out of my way (knocking on doors, voulonteering, etc.) because I got tired of being ripped off. I've never felt ripped off at a Prince concert. He's still the greatest musician and showman of my generation. Nothing he does to his fans changes that for me.
But you also say that Im pom pom cheering him. I have not done that. I've only pointed out peoples hypocrisy imo. And the hypocrisy I'm talking about is actually talking about taking a stand of a boycott but actually doing it which doesn't include fudging on it by still buying material, concerts etc. It's laughabe because then it seems like all talk if there are still hol outs to still go to concerts etc. It makes this outcry seem disingenuous and judt blowing off steam...as usual. And while I dont think closing a website that does deal in illegal activity is wrong and is to be expected sooner or later, I know that Prince is not always the nicest (or meanest) person out there. And I understand nuances of principles etc that you wrote about but these other folks have been concrete in their opinions. No objectivity involved at all imo. I think I've been pretty clear about that.

Prince: Still great at giving concerts, but very bad when it comes to release good music. Nah, you're just delusional. Music is subjective. Just because a person doesnt like an artists, it doesn't mean that artists career is over. There are many of people who will disagree what you're saying and still buy Prince's music. Quality of music doesn't link to an artists career. There are a lot of crappy musicians with long lasting big careers. You're seriously out of your mind. |

You have, but in your rush to label everyone a hypocrite unless they take to the streets and boycott Prince, you continually ignore the things people post that suggest that they can be fans of the music but not the musician, the art and not the artist. You also fail to even acknowledge that there might be a world of difference between setting fire to your entire Prince collection, burying the ashes in the backyard and shitting on the dirt pile as opposed to not buying paying for any more of his records or joining his stupid websites. But to do one and not the other makes one a raging contradiction in your eyes for some reason. Is that about right?
And to whoever it was bitching about being a Zeppelin fan and fretting over Jimmy Page's controlling ways, at least Zeppelin gave us proper live material, stellar concert footage, all with re-mastered sound and never once sued their own fans over something as dumb as a website devoted to their music. At least as far as I know they haven't.

I did read it. That's not at all what TDG was doing or what Prince is doing here and if they were, or he were, I'd support him. I'm prefectly calm, I just write long posts in order to make myself clear. I suppose I could post in L33T speak, Prince 4ever language and walls of emoticons in order to fit in, but I prefer words.
I think your comparison is invalid to what's going on here and it's not the first time Prince has pulled this dumb bullshit.

To have the energy that Prince does to keep performing and travelling the world is remarkable.
As long as fans continue to humiliate, ridicule and 'hate' on Prince, I don't see Prince releasing any music. Why should he? Would you?

If Prince allows the opinions of 100 fans to discourage him from making music, then good, he shouldn't.
The people here on the Org do not represent even a tenth of his fanbase. Most of the people I know personally who are Prince fans don't even post on this site. To think he would punish those fans to get back at a few who don't sing his praises is sad to me. |

I'm not sure i have to like him, i'm an adult, when your grown you've seen people far better than rock stars do what they want to do to get that paper. I dont buy his shit because his business model makes it practical to steal it. The thing about remastering and allowing a label to do a grand rollout of the unreleased stuff is bootleggers cant match the quality and access, therefore you beat the Pirate at his own game. Q-Love is right, it is a crime, one that i have no empathy for because all of this is on him. Without embracing the new models (Youtube etc) he allows others to not just define him but limit him from maximizing on his own shit. Last week a Co-Worker who i can best describe as a 35 year old adolescent who still tours with his garage band made a crack about Prince....and got no response from me. I'm not going to waste my time defending him when that clown takes a shot at him for "assless pants" because Prince himself created the situation where he can be minimized in this way. So, until he can get an effective gameplan, work with Warners to reclaim his place in history and create a Youtube channel to educate and indoctrinate future purple generations..fuck him. My love for him is a private matter, i'll get what i can get because he makes nothing available and when he does release a well done dvd/remaster or anything from the Vault he will get what ever money i have that particular day. why release new music when it'll never get played live is more the question at hand . oh wait it might be in the sample section of the show man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 |

He already has played his new music at live shows. People want to hear the classics so he plays those more often. The fact you're complaining about the same subject for months is pathetic. Move on.
