Agreed.
The first version I ever heard was Chaka Khan's from CK. I was right in the beginning of my Chaka/Prince fandom, and it took me a couple of years to appreciate its quirkiness as well.

Never heard Chaka's, but yeah it is the quirkness that makes it special

I've got the Sheena Easton 7" single kicking about somewhere, and I'd forgotten Chaka Khan recorded it too. Definitely prefer the Prince version that's circulating, but not a big fan of the song at all. Never knew Sheena did it

She recorded it first for release and there were singles released but the album got shelved due to label troubles. There's also a video for it by Sheena. I have the 7" inch as well and I think I might have a 12 inch of it too. One of the rare Prince tracks that I love all 3 takes by all 3 artists. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I figured everyone knew already.
Sheena's version came out in the summer of 87 if I remember correctly. I bought it at a record store in Florida while on family vacation. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Chaka Khan's version is on her CD "CK" and also has the song 'Sticky Wicked' f/Miles Davis & Prince. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

The album, No Sound But A Heart, was released outside the USA in 1987, and in the USA in 1999. The 1999 release was worldwide, and contains 4 bonus tracks, "Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge"" ~ Isaac Asimov

Sheenas 12" version is brilliant., think I might even prefer it to princes version, def better than Chakas, its a great song anyways. & while we're mentioning Sheena, how fantastic is 101????

12 years later. Wow I'd have never even given that a thought. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I didn't know that either. I have the 1987 UK release, and found out about the 1999 reissue when I googled it. Cherry Pop Records (UK) has just applied to EMI for a license to re-release/re-master Sheena Easton's NO SOUND BUT A HEART album. This should give her version of "Eternity" and it's remixes new life!

I have the 7" of Sheena's with the foldout sleeve. I love that song and it is my favorite version. Brilliant.
All released around the same time and solidifying my Prince fandom and thinking of him as a genius, were "Sign O' the Times", "Shockadelica", "Good Love", "Eternity" and the leaks of a then very bootlegged horrible sounding version of "The Black Album" !
I had NO IDEA there is a 12" version of Sheena's "Eternity"! Is it different? Longer? Remixed? If so by who?
And 101/Cool Love were awesome. ESPECIALLY the Prince mixed 12" version of 101!~! [Edited 8/23/12 11:04am] Purplehead

I have the 12". Sheena's vocals are really versatile, just like they were for 101 (another favorite of mine) 1987 12" Tracklist: Eternity (Shep Pettibone Mix) 6:24 Eternity (Single Version) 3:50 Eternity (Dub) 6:16

I've never heard of this song before. I'm not that into bootlegs or associated artists; but I know all of the most popular songs.. never even heard this title before, though.

I heard P's version before the others. I always liked Eternity. I agree with the OP that the demo has an interesting sound to it.

I listened to Chaka's version over and over back when CK came out. I much preferred Eternity over Sticky Wicked, it succedds at what it sets out to be... a good solid pop song. Sticky Wicked is something of a let down when you think of Miles, Prince, and Chaka on the same track. Just my opinion. The Sheena version doesn't cut it for me, she tries to oversell it, and what a cheesy video. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I like Sheena's version of "Eternity"better than Chaka's. Sheena's video was directed by Rebecca Blake who also directed Prince's "Kiss" video.

Eternity - fine concept. i have felt 4 a long time that marriage and the "till death do us part" is one of the biggest cop outs, ever. Eternity goes beyond dense physical form. ~honey is b-ing 1 with the 1~
