Remasters

Okay - Dream Time:

It's 2004 and Warner Bros and Prince have patched up their differences. They've remastered the ENTIRE back catalogue and - OMG! - added the extended versions, remixes and B-Sides. A fan's dream!!!

You can hear every single note, every single nuance crystal clear - the sound quality is amazing. You even start to hear things you've never heard before!

The question is...

WHICH album do you head straight for???

I'm torn between 'Lovesexy' and 'Sign O The Times'...

Obviously I'm the only one who gets excited by that thought (!!).

Anyway - my choice would be 'SOTT'. I love 'Lovesexy' but, given the amount of material AND that album's B-Sides, it'sgotta be 'Sign...'.

I´d buy "Lovesexy", "1999", "Purple Rain" all on the same day. The other ones the next day...

I tend to think that the remastering process is a tad over-rated. It's just a buzzword record companies use to make people purchase the same product over and over again.

The main problem I have with the early material is how softly it is recorded, but that is easily fixed with Soundforge XP.

SOTT, in my opinion this album sounds the worst in quality to the rest. I dont know why but the sounds levels seem flattest and lowest on this album compared to the rest of them. The Prince album and 1999 would also benefit greatly.

In terms of extended versions id go for Parade (Kiss, Mountains, Anotherloverholenyohead, Love or $), and for b-sides id go for ATWIAD.

"1999" would be first. "Dirty Mind" and "Controversy" would be next. Those 3 albums need it the most.

Id say definitely SOTT. The version I have is the worst of all the albums, the volume and quality levels are very poor, perhaps putting it all onto one CD too. I also think Prince would sound much better, Bambi remastered to would be f***g awesome (i hope).

In terms of extended versions Id say Parade (Mountains, Kiss, Anotherloverholenyohead, Love or $), but for B-sides definitely ATWIAD, jeez that had some wicked b-sides, then again so did all princes albums at the time.

Definitely Sign O' The Times.
This (and the Black Album) are the albums in most
dire need of a remaster. Compared to the vinyl
both albums sound flat, quiet & lifeless.
(+ it's my favorite Prince album).

I don't have to be torn. I'd just buy the first 10 albums of his career.

And they'd better not eff up the remastering process, sometimes remastering doesn't come out well if it's done carelessly. They need me for this job, and everybody and their grandma would love it. Believe that.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

The best remastering jobs I've heard
were done for the back catalogues of
Joni Mitchell
Stevie Wonder
& David Bowie.

If they remaster at all it would likely be maybe 5 or 6 albums including the following:
"Most Definitely"
Purple Rain
1999
Sign "O" The Times

"Maybe"
Diamonds And Pearls
Dirty Mind
Lovesexy
Parade
Controversy

"Highly Doubtful"
For You
Prince
Graffiti Bridge
Batman
Symbol
Gold Experience

Warner will look at which albums currently sell and remaster those.

I think it will be a disaster if Dirty Mind will be remastered. The reason I love this album, is because it is so raw. That will be lost in the remastering

If outtakes are included then it would probably be 1999. Possibly Lovesexy, though. I do love those 12 inches off of lovesexy!
