The War - It's a Wrap

The War -- delivered to my home without me knowing it was coming, straight from Paisley Park.

It is what separates prince from all other pop acts and makes him the coolest musician of multiple generations. It's those last 12 minutes. It's edge, funk, rawness; combining guitar, crazy african/cuban drums, blues - and for it to feel so underground....from the same guy who did Rasberry Beret. Awesome.

Great jam! cool

Kind of a "People without" of the 90s. Makes me think of an album with jams of this calibre only. Could be interesting with more energy and cohesion than NEWS for example.

But what to expect from an artist like Prince these days? At the very most another boring by-the-numbers-album with songs not coming close to the ones he came up with in the 80s. lol

Oh yeah. This dude puts NPS out there and makes this a CD-R trading giveaway. Twisted logic indeed.

I remember playing that real audio stream over and over before I got my physical copy.

I remember one day I checked the mail one afternoon and there was a yellow envelope. I had no idea what it was.Inside was a sony tape with The War wrote on it. I put it in my stereo and it was Prince. After The War was some mix of a lot of different Prince songs. Not the purple medley. It had obscure stuff like Big Fun. A good day indeed. Later I bought the cd.

I'm still waiting for my tape. It's only been 14+ years. Perhaps someday my Prince will come...

The post-it note your address was written on probably fell down the back of the lavatory cubicle that doubled as the 1800-NF offices in those days.

He played it at the Hippodrome aftershow in 98, and it was the best thing of the night - moody, serious, quite breathtaking really. I rmemeber Prince being at the keyboard while he sang / rapped it.

I was quite underwhelmed by the version that came out though...

The Remix Experience by DJ Brother Jules?

I never knew that...

1/ The War cassettes sent to people were "hand-made" eek

2/ There was something else on it eek eek eek

Not my copies. I was sent 2 of the tapes. They only had 1 song, repeated on side 2, and that was The War. They weren't hand-made either, although, they were designed to look like they were... sort of an official bootleg like the NYC Live tape.

I didn't come across DJ Brother Jules' The Remix Experience until he (Jules) released CDR singles of it along with a couple remixes from Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic a couple years later.

YES! The War is such an amazing song! The guitar is so off the edge! headbang

I concur that it is one of these pieces which seperates Prince from all other artists! It's perfect in that their are many sounds and textures within it. I remember looking SO hard for it, and when I finally got it it blew my head OFF!

The War + One Song; are such amazing pieces of work from Prince! smile

Prince once again predicts a world where we are in war with the government. He asks the question; "Do we love our country more than God?' His questions and predicition of future events are very interesting to look into; if you consider the framework of mind he had at the time. It's SLAMMING! headbang headbang

I'm slamming it now! lol

To be honest, I've never heard this song at all. Maybe because I'm not that crazy about his 97/98 output.

The War is great. But, I have a question, although I downloaded it in MPEG layer 3 audio file format why won't it play on my stereo CD player? I have burned other CDs in the same format--but this particular one won't play. And my lap top speakers aren't worth shit. Can anybody enlighten me on how to solve this problem? I'm scratching my head right now... neutral

BTW The War on headphones is something else. eek First time I ever listened to it on headphones and yeah the last few minutes are just blowing me away...

You should track it down. It's a million miles away from the other bile he was spewing out in 97/98.

*gasp* Defo track it down - It's nothing like anything else from 97/98. smile

It's precursor to TRC IMO. It's trippy and spaced out like Colonized Mind and Hallucination Rain.

Ur file is somehow corrupted or something like that. Burn it as a real CD not an mp3 CD, that should do the trick.

Well he does have a long talk about creation, choices, and God for about 5 minutes and some 45 seconds..Then he starts one of the most beautiful songs ever. IMO. smile

Ohhhh boy, this song is something else. I remember when I heard it for the first time this year, I was at school in my TV Production class searching various video sites for a song to do a music video to for the class. I stumbled onto a really low quality 240p video of the song and was blown away. When I showed the song to my group, they scoffed at the 25 minute song and said not only that they didn't wanna make a video to the song, but that the song was BORING! I was heartbroken to say the least. Although, I found the song in much higher quality recently and I'm loving it. I might make that music video alone just for kicks now.

Purple is the color of my heart,
Bruised from you leaving me.
