What's the general opinion on Under The Cherry Moon the movie? I'm talking about the movie, not album.

Include your thoughts and ideas, people will chew you up for little openings like this
the album is called Parade, you meant to say "I'm talking about the movie, not the song."
* ...In general, post if you have something to say. If you want to start a new thread, make it worthwhile. Don't be lazy and give a 1-sentence "what do you think about X?". At least explain your position, why, etc... make it interesting to read; you're more likely to get quality responses.

It was regarded as a huge disaster at the time, but it has a small cult following now as one of those "so bad it's funny" films. But like OF4S asked, what do you think? There are a million threads on this. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

I like it better than the other 2 movies, and watched it the most. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I like it, always have. I prefer it over "Purple Rain", to be honest.

It was better recieved in Europe as the light comedy it was intended to be. In the U.S. it was a hated flop, because it had none of the spirit of Purple Rain, and referenced movie genres that teenagers knew nothing about. It was also a victim of backlash against Prince which really ignited because of "We Are the World" bad press, that made the average joe hate him.
The rumor is that he had originally asked MARTIN SCORSESE to direct it when the two met by chance in France. Scorsese seaid he was already great at doing his own thing, so Prince nabbed one of his cinematographers instead.
In my opinion it suffers from a poorly written script first and formost of it's central problems. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Yeah that's what I meant. Song not album. As for everything else, if people want to "chew me up" for something like this, frankly I don't give a fuck. It's not my purpose to please people on the Internet twice my age. And I'm not being lazy. I want to know the general consensus about the movie, not what individuals think. I know the movie itself flopped but a lot of media flops have a fanbase or cult following, which is why I asked what the general opinion is. I didn't give my thoughts initially in the thread because I don't want the thread based on what I think of it. My appoligies if anything I said here pisses you (or anybody else off) or if it's something I shouldn't say on here.
As for my opinions, I actually think it's an awesome movie. Which is why I want to know how it's viewed among the general Prince fanbase. I like the movie and I think it looks good in black and white. I'm suprised looking at some of the responses though. I can understand Graffiti Bridge, but I had no idea there was people who like it better than Purple Rain though.

I love UTCM I enjoy it more than Graffiti Bridge, I think it shows Prince's more humorous side and portrayed him in a different light to what we saw in Purple Rain, plus the movie has many funny lines between Prince and Jerome I think they worked together well and to go with it the Parade album is amazing Prince made some real good music around this time with instrumentals such as Alexa De Paris included in the film also, I think it would be amazing to see it in colour too the feeling U get when U fall in love not with a girl or a boy but with the heavens above

Terrible writing, and really awful movie. Much better than Graffiti Bridge, but that's because UTCM doesn't take itself too seriously.
Prince is just too weird for the general audience to accept in a role like that. What the movie needed was far more offbeat characters.
It should have been done like "New Girl", the new sitcom on television. Instead of relying on Zoey Deschenel to be funny the entire cast has it's own quirks, and the chemistry between them is what pulls off the show. UTCM was Prince trying to show his ligther side, 'Tricky' being tricky, and everyone else being absolutely one dimensional.
Mary Sharon is supposed to get married, but you never sense it looming or the tension of it. You never get the feeling that perhaps this is an issue Prince needs to overcome.
Her father is overpowering and dominating, but you never get a feeling for his motivations, or a sense that this will be a problem. When his hired thugs appear and he argues with Mary, it just feels terribly random.
The parts I did like were that it was released in black and white, and the overall atmosphere. The movei really does feel like you're on vacation with these folks in Nice.

Do an indie remake with a Philipino Prince imitator. And the cast of "New Girl".

I love the movie and especially the storyline. I mean, a movie about a male whore is right up my alley. I thought it was beautifully shot in black and white too. It kinda gave it an old 1940s feel like one of those old movies that used to be on TV at 2 o'clock in the morning. The acting wasn't great but that was to be expected since it's a musician and not an actor. The only part I didn't like was Prince trying to act like Morris Day. Even if Morris's whole persona was created by Prince, it looks more natural on Morris. On Prince, it just looks fake and stupid. Andy is a four letter word.

Actually, so do I. Or at least I used to back in the days, haven't watched either for a while. Purple Rain is essentially an extended pop video. Under the Cherry Moon is kind of cool, if you don't take it too seriously (and obviously it wasn't intended to be taken too seriously). I also really like the fact that it's in black and white. It's kind of stylish and I like the atmosphere. It's obviously not a cinematic masterpiece but it's good for what it is. And it's definitely more original than Purple Rain.

I too really enjoyed this movie when I saw it in the theater as I liked seeing Prince in a different light than the usual pouty little prick that he seemed to show in Purple Rain as well as any public appearance he would make. I guess my hope was that the public would too like this "other side of Prince" but like someone pointed to ealier in this thread, he had already pissed off too many people with his public persona, We Are the World, award shows, etc. that people were over him in very short order. And actually, I don't think he really ever fully recovered from that persona and it hurt his future success and people's willingness to open their hearts and minds like he requested in Paisley Park the song. Oh well, I sure am glad I was able to really "hear" Prince as it opened me up to a lot of enjoyment through the years!!
Yea, I know, a lot of ridicule too!!

I loved it too, but the part I didn't like was when he got shot... it looked a little too dramatic. Thats why i sort of laughed on that part... CCMCC Graduate....

I agree, the movie has a nice atmosphere. It just feels comforting. The movie could have been a minute long about Prince making a sandwhich but as long as it felt the same way UTCM does, it would be a good movie.

I like it. Thought it was filmed beautifully, and funny. I don't understand why Prince got and still does get so much crap for it, though I think a lot had to do with the fact it didn't have a "And then they lived happily ever after" ending with rainbows and unicorns and all that shiz.
AND I like Graffiti Bridge. Whutwhut.
(2 be honest though both movies are hard to follow and random at certain points, especially GB. I think GB is famous for scenes that leave you like "...Okay, what the heck just happened?" and both leave a little more to be desired. But I love them.) ~ You're a desire, I get higher every time I speak your name ~

Prince was so cool, I don't like the ending of the film, though. Prince 4Ever.

This is an interesting thread because I am currently showing the movie to my two sons who have been bugging me to see it. I watched the other night since I haven't in a while and it is kind of stupid and I found it to be quite boring. The story just does not make sense. I think it really could have used better writing and to not have Prince directing the movie. Also, although I love his music and lots of other things about him, PRINCE CANNOT ACT!! I like Kristin Scott Thomas and Jerome Benton in it though, they were both quite good. The rest of the movie is just not very good. Of course, the music is great and the scenery is quite nice.

The biggest problem with the movie is that it doesn't have enough music in it. The Beatles' second movie Help! had a silly plot and bad acting, but nobody cares because the songs were so great. The DVD of Help! allows you to skip all the plot and just watch the songs. If UTCM was even more corny but with twice the music, it might have been more popular. I watched it with a bunch of friends & after watching it they all agreed that he's gay. I can understand what they meant, I mean the outfits he wore, the way he let Mary take the lead when they were dancing & she twirled HIM around, the way he acted around Tricky - he had a bath in front of him & fell on top of each other for gods sake!! I got to admit, even I was a bit confused... So is CT meant to be a gay/bi/straight man all in one? Peace in the House of Prince.

I have had countless conversations on this with people, but I really believe that Prince was not just flirting with the idea of gender, but actually 'coming out' in his own repressed way. Folks defend this by saying that if Prince were gay that he would have already come out considering the kind of stuff he was singing about. They point out songs like Sister, head, Darlin Nikki, etc---but it's one thing to assert your sexual conquest--it's quite something else to come out in public during the 80s.
I can't think of anybody who would watch UTCM or any of Prince's earlier interviews and not see that he's not completely straight. As time went on, he toughened up and now talks in a street savvy vernacular, but my guess is this is an act.
