I watched it with a bunch of friends & after watching it they all agreed that he's gay. I can understand what they meant, I mean the outfits he wore, the way he let Mary take the lead when they were dancing & she twirled HIM around, the way he acted around Tricky - he had a bath in front of him & fell on top of each other for gods sake!! I got to admit, even I was a bit confused... So is CT meant to be a gay/bi/straight man all in one?

I have had countless conversations on this with people, but I really believe that Prince was not just flirting with the idea of gender, but actually 'coming out' in his own repressed way. Folks defend this by saying that if Prince were gay that he would have already come out considering the kind of stuff he was singing about. They point out songs like Sister, head, Darlin Nikki, etc---but it's one thing to assert your sexual conquest--it's quite something else to come out in public during the 80s.

I can't think of anybody who would watch UTCM or any of Prince's earlier interviews and not see that he's not completely straight.

As time went on, he toughened up and now talks in a street savvy vernacular, but my guess is this is an act.

Prince is completely straight in this movie. The thing is - he's so completely unrepressed and doesn't follow the mores of society of how to behave AS a heterosexual...that he defines it himself.

If you're not intelligent or bright - you'll just see the outer things : the clothes, makeup etc ..and not the spirit inside. He's ABSOLUTELY straight in this film.

Dude, I have never been more sure of anything in myh life--I am far, far, far smarter than most, including yourself.

Besides, the org voted on this ages ago.

First half is fun...second half is just absurd and goofy.

It's not as bad as Grafitti Bridge but that's not saying much.

And of course Purple Rain is 10x better.

Oddly enough,I liked UTCM when it came out.I thought it was a fun, playful movie with alot of great humor and nice scenery. However, these days when I watch it,I can see that it has its share of problems. The critics were right.Prince's biggest mistake was not using a skilled director.

This is an interesting thread because I am currently showing the movie to my two sons who have been bugging me to see it. I watched the other night since I haven't in a while and it is kind of stupid and I found it to be quite boring. The story just does not make sense. I think it really could have used better writing and to not have Prince directing the movie. Also, although I love his music and lots of other things about him, PRINCE CANNOT ACT!! I like Kristin Scott Thomas and Jerome Benton in it though, they were both quite good. The rest of the movie is just not very good. Of course, the music is great and the scenery is quite nice.

I agree, the story needed better writing.Really lame story and atrocious acting.A skilled director could have smoothed out the rough spots, but Prince'e ego got in the way of common sense lol

I've read in a blu-ray forum that Warner Brothers plan on rereleasing a bunch of movies next year on blu-ray to celebrate their 90th anniversary. I doubt it if this movie will be rereleased, but I'd purchase it if it was.

It's a nice watch. I enjoy the story and LOVE the cinematography. If you want to sit back, relax, and enjoy a film, UTCM would be just that. smile

I don't this it was made to be taken seriously. It an extended music video for the fans. If a regular person went to see it and they liked it...so what.

Compared to the garbage the studios are releasing today, I think it holds up fairly well...for Prince fans!

Yep, When you push LOVE changing people, it doesn't always come out right. Purple Rain did it without having to define it.

love the visuals, some parts were better than the others. I love the opening that was intense Prince, some of his best acting is non spoken performing. Christopher Tracey's Parade (song) worked well with the scene

To much like Morris Day & Jerome

the Revolution & the proteges 100% should have been in the movie, that's just more promo for your music.

Prince just had to have himself dying in the movie, he couldn't get it in PR so he fires the director and get's it in UTCM

the Music was wonderful for the film, performances would have been even better

November 1985: Nice, France

p 94

chapter 7

Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince

Back in France, the shooting of Under the shooting of Under the Cherry Moon limped to a close

On the set in Nice, Prince seemed conflicted about Christopher Tracy, the character he had created for himself to play in the film. This charismatic, sexy, and somewhat snide piano player was hardly a sympathetic figure, and Prince's plan all along had been for Tracy to die at the end of the film, representing his own symbolic transcendence of these character flaws. But Warner Bros. preferring (as film studios invariably do) a happy ending, pshed him to conclude with Tracy reforming and heading off into the sunset with lover interest Mary (Scott-Thomas).

The alternative ending was shot, and publicist Howard Bloom, viewing a cut of the film where Tracy survives, found himself believing in the character's redemptive journey. "Warner Bros. insisted on him getting the girl at the end, and it really worked," Bloom remembered. "This little asshole character that was so hard to identify with, you bonded with by the end."

But Prince favored the original ending. In the final cut, Tracy died (the victim of an assassination) with the result, in Bloom's view, that any meaning in the film was also destroyed.

christopher & mary deserved more advertures, good girl gone bad, scamming their way around europe & throw in plenty of sexual encounters with elaborate shopping sprees, new clothes & posh hotels.

instead he got shot in the arse. i wish he'd left mary up the duff
