Dez Dickerson replaced Hey y'all... Was it Prince's idea to get rid of Dez for Wendy or did Dez want out? Sorry if this has been discussed already...I know some you u orgers are kinda angry lately.
Peace | |

I always thought Dez left on his own accord because his religious beliefs didn't jive with the music Prince was doing at the time?

Dez wrote a whole book about this
I read it a couple of years ago but IIRC the main reason was that he wanted a solo career and that he got kind of jealous of just being the star's guitarist instead of the star period. He doesn't say that he regrets he has left, but he says very clearly that he left for the wrong reasons.

I think it was a combination of all of the reasons stated above.
I think he got tired singing the nasty lyrics, wanted to try out the solo thing, and Prince was already eyeing Wendy as a possible replacement.
Seemed to me like they left things on pretty good terms (though I have yet to read Dez' book)
I always liked the kamakaze bandana look. "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds

Dez also said something to the degree of he knew Prince was going to go into more stageshow like live performances, than the more raw straightforward music they did up till that point. I'm not using the right word:stageshow

It's been years since I read Dez's book, but I remember that he said the performances were becoming more theatrical/ like a Broadway show and Dez missed the more improvised vibe of the earlier shows. Prince was also becoming a bigger star and wasn't hanging out with the band in the same way and the cameraderie wasn't there as much.

RIGHT, that's what he used.
Yeah I remember he said he and his wife were with Prince during the PR era and said to him "let's go to the mall or something like that" and Prince dropped his head and said can't do that kind of stuff anymore...
the visual of what I noticed in the change of the more 'interoverted shows' vs the theatrical shows is Prince saying "Thank you" alot in the middle or end of a song with the arms out ready to bow look. SOmething minor I know but...
not as much during PR but I saw it on the Parade tour and more on the SOTT shows and after

what the hell is prince gonna do at a mall anyway ... get a t shirt at hot topic?
maybe stop by sears and try on some jeans?
what i would love to know, since dez is the topic ... how did he quit/get fired ... yet still end up in the purple rain movie singing a solo song? ... that must be an interesting timeline of events.

LOL I forgot where he suggested they go, some new lace
He left the band on good terms. It's weird because they all (except Prince so far) have issues with the 'dirty' songs then a few years later Dez is at the 1st Avenue show singing Head and Sheila E is singing Erotic City

Dez, yea Lisa
Is Prince's water warm enough
Uh huh Lisa
Shall we begin?
slurp Hell yes Lisa
Hard imaging Dez in Wendy's scenes
or what song would have even been in place of Computer Blue
and who was going to kneel before Prince on Darling Nikki
Was Prince going to go kiss Lisa during Purple Rain?
ahhh the what if's lol
I love some Dez too
Actually have a 2nd guitarist would have been cool since he did it for Parade anyway maybe that could have been written in the scene of a little tiff in the band, Lisa bringing in her lover

Well...when u put it that way I guess he had to go not trying to see him on Nikki

lol song could have made it without that but when reading the intent from the script, only Wendy would do
The CLUB is THROBBING. Prince is
