I'm one of those people who doesn't believe in rules where music is concerned. I don't think a song HAS to have a melody to be good.
No music expert in terms of the technical aspects, but to me, whether or not the songs have melodies is irrelevant because a lot of the shit Prince put out during that time period still sounds good, so...who cares?
Sometimes I think Prince fans are way too anal. man you didn't get the poiont of this topic.it's not about bashing Prince's abilities,it is a subject about his natural progression in songwritting.i don't think he lost inspiration,he just progressed in a different way, like you said sound textures over classic pop songwriting.

I agree, and this is why they call it "Music Theory".
All the Lovesexy songs have melody, some just take more bars of listening to complete the Melody. If it's a nursury rhyme you're looking for, this aini't it here folks!
None the less, lot's of melody all over the place. Every keyboard line buried in the mix is an interesting melody, not just in vocals (When 2 R In Love) Bass lines (Lovesexy) Background sing along part in Positivity, "In every mans life, there'll be a hang up.." and so on.
Anyway, we can all agree to disagree. ..."holding someone is truly believing"
